Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character said: "There are families who live their entire lives without a single thing of interest happening to them. I've always envied those families"?

Answer: Tom

Tom Wingo said this in his narration at the beginning of the movie. He was telling the audience that his family life was more than interesting and that he longed for a more mundane life.

Incorrect answers:

Lila, Tom's mother was portrayed by Kate Nelligan, who won an Oscar for "Best Actress in a Supporting Role".
Savannah, Tom's twin was portrayed by Melinda Dillon, who played a leading role in Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind".
Sally, Tom's wife was portrayed by Blythe Danner, Gwyneth Paltrow's mother.
2. Which character said: "I don't care about The Big Dipper...I care about us"?

Answer: Sally

Sally Wingo said this to Tom when they were walking on the beach in front of their home, the same night that they learned of Savannah's suicide attempt. Sally was frustrated and hurt that Tom had been avoiding her and she needed to know how he felt about her. In response, Tom looked up at the sky and pointed out the Big Dipper. Sally was furious that Tom deliberately avoided talking about the subject at hand.

Incorrect Answers:
Tom said that he inherited an appreciation of nature and a love of vocabulary from his mother, and in this scene, his knowledge of nature and love of words, worked against him.
Henry Wingo, Tom's violent father, was portrayed by veteran actor, Brad Sullivan.
Lila, Tom's manipulative mother, divorced his father and married the wealthy and influential, Reese Newbury.
3. Which character said: "Savannah and I have been robbed twice this year. They're leaping from fire escapes now. One guy landed on my air conditioner. I greased my window sills - that didn't help at all"?

Answer: Eddie

Eddie said this to Tom when he first arrived at Savannah's apartment in New York. Eddie was Savannah's close friend who lived in the same apartment building. Eddie knew that Savannah was in the hospital but didn't know that Tom had been summoned to New York and that he would be staying at Savannah's apartment. He heard Tom come in and threatened him with a gun, because he thought that he was a thief. Once he realized that it was Tom, he put the gun down and began watering Savannah's plants. He explained to Tom that both he and Savannah's apartments had been robbed that year.

Incorrect Answers:
Luke was Tom and Savannah's sibling, who died trying to save the family's land.
George Carlin, most remembered as a socially and politically incorrect comedian, portrayed the character, Eddie.
Reese Newbury, portrayed by Bob Hannah who, in the same year portrayed the defense attorney in yet another award winning movie, "Fried Green Tomatoes".
4. Which character said: "I don't care if it takes drugs or voodoo...or reading the tarot cards, I want her alive"?

Answer: Dr. Lowenstein

Dr. Lowenstein said this to Tom in the hallway of the psychiatric hospital. Tom was angry that Savannah was heavily drugged and strapped down to her bed. He demanded to know why Dr. Lowenstein was treating his sister in an inhumane manner. Dr. Lowenstein explained that Savannah needed to be sedated and physically restrained because she was still very suicidal and therefore very much a threat to herself. She angrily defended her methods of psychiatric treatment and told Tom that she would do whatever it took to keep Savannah alive.

Incorrect Answers:

Tom, portrayed by Nick Nolte later apologized to Dr. Lowenstein.
Lila didn't go to New York, she manipulated Tom into going instead.
Nurse Baine was a fictional character. Tom only questioned Dr. Lowenstein, portrayed by Barbra Streisand who directed the movie as well.
5. Which character said: "It's elegant food...it's going to get me into The Colleton League"?

Answer: Lila

Lila said this to Henry at the dinner table, when he went into a rage about her serving him Shrimp Newburg. Lila, a woman of meager means, desperately wanted to be a member of The Colleton League, a pretentious women's club. She stopped Henry's raving by serving him leftover hash, which she made out of dog food.

Incorrect Answers:
Tom, enjoyed fine cooking but despised pretense.
Savannah tried to assuage her mother's hurt feelings by asking why she wanted to be a member of a club who obviously didn't want her.
Sally, also a doctor, was not a good cook. Since Dr. Lowenstein didn't cook, Tom wanted to know why doctors had such an aversion to cooking.
6. Which character said: "I didn't get to play last year because I never made the team...I mean, they made fun of me"?

Answer: Bernard

Bernard said this to Tom on the sidewalk, outside of Savannah's apartment. Dr. Lowenstein, Bernard's mother arranged for Tom, a football coach by profession, to give Bernard lessons that summer. The day before, at his first lesson, Bernard showed up late, denied wanting to play football and insulted Tom by calling him a hillbilly. Tom was familiar with teenage behaviors because of his experience as a high school English teacher and football coach. Tom saw through Bernard's snobby, tough guy facade and told him that any snot-nosed kid who would insult his coach wouldn't be allowed to haul water, let alone get to play football. The next day Bernard found Tom outside of his apartment, only this time he was very humble and very apologetic because he desperately wanted Tom to coach him in football. He was trying to tell Tom that he had lied about being uninterested in playing football. He admitted that the kids at school made fun of him when he tried out for the team. Tom accepted Bernard's apology and agreed to coach him with the condition that Bernard follow basic rules, such as being courteous and respectful to his coach.

Incorrect Answers:
Jason Gould, the son of Barbra Streisand and Elliot Gould, portrayed the part of Bernard.

Answer: Lila
