Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer

Answer: Aerosmith

As you may have guessed, the missing frontman was Steven Tyler. Not only is Steve the lead singer, but he also plays keyboards, harmonica, and percussion.

Aerosmith is an American band formed in Boston in 1970. When the band was formed, it was a mixture of two bands who got together, Chain Reaction and the Jam Band. Steven Tyler was actually the drummer for Chain Reaction but said when the new band was formed, he wanted to be the frontman, and he got his wish. And so it began. Hard rock, blues rock, and heavy metal feature in the genre of Aerosmith.

Between 1973 and 2012, Aerosmith has recorded 15 studio albums and seven live albums. Single-wise, the band is known for songs like "Love in an Elevator," 1989; "Janie's Got a Gun," 1989; and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," 1998.
2. Ed O'Brien, Colin Greenwood, Philip Selway and Jonny Greenwood

Answer: Radiohead

Thom Yorke is the primary songwriter and lead singer for the English band Radiohead. Yorke is also a multitalented musician who can play the guitar, bass, keyboards, and several other instruments. Radiohead was formed in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, in 1985. On 22 February 1993, Radiohead released their debut album "Pablo Honey." On the album was a track called "Creep," which was released as a single. This was the record that paved the way for the band as it charted in several countries.

Between 2000 and 2016, Radiohead had six albums in the US and UK, all making the top ten. "Kid A," 2000, and "In Rainbows," 2007, both reached number one. Over the years, I have seen the band perform a mixture of art rock, alternative rock, electronica, and experimental rock. Commercially, their biggest-selling album is "OK Computer" (1997), with sales around ten million copies. The album had three very popular songs, "Paranoid Android," "Karma Police," and "No Surprises," all top-ten hits on the UK singles chart.
3. Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree

Answer: Blur

Blur is led by frontman and songwriter Damon Albarn. Originally from London, the band was named Seymour, but they changed it to Blur in 1990. Their future record label, Food, disliked the name Seymour and provided the band with a list of alternative names to choose from. Blur was on that list, and it seemed that all the members favored this name. Consequently, Blur became the official name in 1990, and the band signed a contract with Food.

Between 1993 and 1997, Blur was part of the Britpop scene along with the English band Oasis. It was a time when both bands were in battle to get the highest positions on the charts; it would later be known as the "Battle of Britpop." It was a fun time to see who would come out on top.

On the albums chart, Blur had seven out of nine studio albums topping the UK Albums Chart. Top singles included were "There's No Other Way," 1991; "Girls & Boys," 1994; and "Country House," 1995.
4. Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard and Mike McCready

Answer: Pearl Jam

Eddie Vedder is the principal lead singer and lyricist for the American band Pearl Jam. In March 1991, the band first used the name Pearl Jam, originally known as Mookie Blaylock. In 1991, Pearl Jam signed with Epic Records and released their debut album, "Ten," on August 27. Most of the songs on the album were written by Eddie Vedder. Three songs from the album, "Alive," "Even Flow," and "Jeremy," all charted.

Between 1991 and 2024, Pearl Jam has released 12 studio albums, all of which reached the top five on the US Billboard 200, while in the UK, ten of the albums were in the top ten on the charts.
5. Bill Berry, Peter Buck and Mike Mills

Answer: R.E.M.

We could never forget Michael Stipe, lead singer and lyricist for the American rock band R.E.M. Michael Stipe and all the members listed stayed with the band until it disbanded in 2011, apart from Bill Berry, who left R.E.M. in 1997 for health reasons.

In 1980 the four lads were studying at the University of Georgia and formed R.E.M. in Athens, Georgia. You have to say right from the start the chemistry between them paved the way for future success. The breakthrough for the band was with a single called "The One I Love," released on August 24, 1987. The song reached number two on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks (Billboard) and number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The biggest turning point for the band was when they signed with the Warner Bros. label in 1988. The next nine albums were huge commercial successes, with most of them reaching first or second in the American or UK charts. Released on September 9, 1996 (US), the tenth studio album "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" topped the charts in 15 countries.
6. Tim Commerford, Tom Morello and Brad Wilk

Answer: Rage Against the Machine

The frontman for Rage Against the Machine is vocalist and lyricist Zack de la Rocha. "RAGE", as the band is often referred to, was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1991. Between 1992 and 2000, they have released four studio albums, with "Evil Empire" (1996) and "The Battle of Los Angeles" (1999) topping the charts on the US Billboard 200.

The music of Rage Against the Machine deeply reflects their political stance. Their core mission is to strongly oppose US military actions, white supremacy, and systems of exploitation. You can tell from the lyrics in the songs many have a political meaning and are a dig at the establishment.
7. Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth and Jerry Harrison

Answer: Talking Heads

David Byrne is an American singer, songwriter, and a founding member of Talking Heads. Byrne is the lead singer and the main songwriter. Talking Heads were formed in New York City, U.S., in 1975. In 1976, they signed up with Sire Records, and in 1977, they released their debut album, "Talking Heads: 77." Between 1977 and 1988, they released eight studio albums. Commercially the studio album "Little Creatures" (1985) and a live album called "Stop Making Sense" (1984) were the band's greatest achievements.

In 1991 Talking Heads disbanded, although they did reunite in 2002 when they got their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When the punk movement was in its heyday in New York, the band was in the right place at the right time, so it's no surprise to learn the music they played was a mixture of new wave art punk, post-punk, worldbeat, and art pop.
8. John Bonham, John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page

Answer: Led Zeppelin

Robert Plant is the lead singer for Led Zeppelin; he also wrote most of Led Zeppelin's lyrics, while Jimmy Page wrote most of the music. Led Zeppelin were active between 1968 and 1980. Plant has a four-octave vocal range and can sing just about any type of rock songs.

"Stairway to Heaven" (1971) is probably the most famous song from the band, although "Whole Lotta Love," "Kashmir," "Immigrant Song," and "Black Dog" are not far behind. In the twelve years Led Zeppelin was active, they produced nine studio albums and released 19 singles. All the albums made the top ten on the US and UK charts, with several reaching number one.

When drummer John Bonham passed away in 1980, the band disbanded. During the inquest, it was determined that Bonham died from pulmonary aspiration, a condition in which food or liquid accidentally enters the lungs instead of the stomach.
9. Nikolai Fraiture, Albert Hammond jr., Fabrizio Moretti and Nick Valensi

Answer: The Strokes

The frontman for The Strokes is Julian Casablancas, lead singer and primary songwriter. The Strokes were formed in New York in 1998. In 2001, they released their debut album "Is This It." The album reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and peaked at number 33 on the US Billboard 200.

From 2003 until 2020, the band released five more albums, all of which were top ten hits in the US and the UK. According to the band's record labels, RCA and Cult, a new album called "Reality Awaits" is scheduled to be released on the 24th of July, 2026.
10. Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan

Answer: System of a Down

Serj Tankian is the frontman and primary songwriter for System of a Down. He is highly regarded as a vocalist due to his extensive vocal range of 4.2 octaves. In 2006, Hit Parader magazine placed him at number 26 on their "Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists" list.

System of a Down was formed in Glendale, California, U.S., in 1994. Between 1997 and 2026, the lineup remained the same. Antranik Khachaturian, who was the original drummer, left in 1997 and was replaced by John Dolmayan.

On June 30, 1998, they released their debut album "System of a Down." Chart-wise, the album reached number one on the US Top Heatseekers (Billboard) and a lonely 103 on the UK Album Chart. Four more albums followed: "Toxicity" (2001), "Steal This Album!" (2002), "Mezmerize" (2005), and "Hypnotize" (2005).
