The novelty song, "How Much is That Doggie in the Window?" was written by Bob Merrill in 1952. Merrill is also known for the songs "If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd've Baked a Cake" and "Honeycomb." Though Merrill's works stand on their own, "Doggie" was shot to fame by Patti Page.

When Yul Brynner was suggested for the role of "The King," Rodgers was reminded of the song, Hammerstein wrote new lyrics and we ended up with "Getting to Know You."
