In 1982, "E.T." ruled the box office, the Falkland Wars started, and Time Magazine named the personal computer their "Man Of The Year". Given ten pictures, match up each picture to a word in a song that made the Billboard Hot 100 for 1982.
"Eye Of The Tiger" is best known for being the theme song to "Rocky III" but it wasn't the film's first choice. Sylvester Stallone wanted Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" but the band rejected the idea. Survivor's hit was the second biggest hit song for 1982.
2. Vangelis
On the "Chariots Of Fire" soundtrack, the song was listed as "Titles". After it was released as a pop single, the instrumental by Vangelis was collectively known as "Chariots Of Fire". The song reached number one in the United States and Japan. The film won four Oscars including Best Original Score.
3. McCartney and Wonder
When you take two of the most popular songwriters of all-time, Paul McCartney of the Beatles and Stevie Wonder, you'd expect their collaboration to have mind-blowing lyrics. "Ebony And Ivory" was a cute pop song that compared the black and white keys of a piano to relationships between white and black people.
Many found the lyrics trite and schmaltzy but it still found its way to the top of the Billboard Charts.
4. Dazz Band
The Dazz Band were a funky R&B band based out of Cleveland, Ohio. They struck it big with their 1982 hit "Let It Whip" which became the 24th ranked on the year-end Billboard countdown. The song has been covered by the likes of Boyz II Men and the original version has been used in multiple movie soundtracks including 2022's "M3GAN".
5. Don Henley and Stevie Nicks
Eagles' co-lead singer , Don Henley, and Stevie Nicks, co-lead singer of Fleetwood Mac, took the sexy ballad, "Leather And Lace" to number six on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was originally written by Stevie for country music superstar Waylon Jennings' album with his wife Jessi Colter. They named their album, "Leather And Lace" but surprisingly didn't record the song on the album.
6. Elton John
Most of Elton John's biggest hits were collaborations with Bernie Taupin. But 1982's "Blue Eyes" was co-written with Gary Osborne. It was the lead single on Elton's "Jump Up!" album that also featured "Empty Garden". "Blue Eyes" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance - Male.
7. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
In 1968, Tommy James and the Shondells took "Crimson and Clover" to the top of the US pop charts. Fourteen years later, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts repeated the success except they only reached number seven. It was the second biggest hit of Jett's solo career after "I Love Rock and Roll" which finished 1982 at number three on the year-end countdown.
8. Diana Ross
Coming in at number 86 for 1982 was Diana Ross' "Mirror Mirror". The song pays reference to the Wicked Queen's line in the movie "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". It was Diana's second single on her album "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?"
9. Hall And Oates
Hall And Oates had three songs finish on the 1982 year-end countdown. "Private Eyes" (pictured here) reached number 44. "Did It In A Minute" finished at 66. "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" ended the year at number 15. Both "Private Eyes" and "I Can't Go For That" reached number one on the charts.
10. Loverboy
"Working For The Weekend" was the first major pop hit for the Canadian rock band, Loverboy. Released on the album "Get Lucky", the song received major airplay on Rock Radio as well as the pop charts. VH-1 included "Working For The Weekend" as one of the 100 Greatest Songs of the 1980s.
