Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Don't Throw Your Love Away"

Answer: The Searchers

In June 2025, 'Gold Radio' placed "Don't Throw Your Love Away" at number six in their list of 'The Searchers' 10 Best Songs, Ranked".

The Orlons were first to release 'Don't Throw Your Love Away', which was written by Billy Jakson and Jimmy Wisner.

As well as taking it to number 16 in the US The Searchers took it to number one in the UK in 1963.
2. "The Onion Song"

Answer: Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

"The Onion Song" reached number 50 on the Hot 100 and number nine in the UK in November 1969.

At that time Tammi Terrell was seriously ill and some have said that Valerie Simpson sang the female vocals. She later denied such a prominent involvement.
3. "Early in the Morning"

Answer: Vanity Fare

In 1969, "Early in the Morning" was a UK number eight and US number 12. (If you were to see this on one of those interminable social media clips of 60s songs, an AI voice would say "US hash 12".)

Vanity Fare got together in 1968 and were still performing, with personnel changes, 50 years later.
4. "Really Gonna Shake"

Answer: Sandra Barry & The Boys

Also credited as Sandra Barry & The Boyfriends, "Really Gonna Shake" was released in 1964 to little success.

Barry had been a child actor and she continued her singing career into the 1970s.
Her backing band, The Boys, later became The Action and were well regarded in the business.
5. "You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry"

Answer: The Caravelles

The Caravelles were the English duo Andrea Simpson and Lois Wilkinson. In 1963 they took "You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry" to number three in the USA and number six in the UK.

The duo were one of the first British acts to make it onto the Hot 100 - predating even The Beatles. Sadly, it was to be their biggest hit.
6. "Baby Come Back"

Answer: The Equals

"Baby Come Back" topped the UK charts in 1968 and made number 32 in the USA. It was a number one in Germany and Belgium. It had originally been a B side on another single by The Equals.

It is not to be confused with the similarly-named song by Player that topped the US charts in 1978.
7. "Delilah"

Answer: Tom Jones

For many years, "Delilah" was sung at games played by the Wales Rugby Union team. The Welsh Rugby Union banned the song from stadium playlists in 2015, and in 2023 instructed visiting choirs not to sing it. The song is viewed in some circles as misogynistic and (at the very least) tolerating violence against women. Sir Tom Jones has spoken out against the ban and supporters continued to sing the song.

In 1968, Jones took the song to number two on the UK charts and number 15 in the US.
8. "The Rain The Park And Other Things"

Answer: The Cowsills

The Rain The Park And Other Things" hit number two on the Hot 100 in 1967 and reached the top in Canada.

The Cowsills were a family band - five brothers and one sister, and their mother.

It was said that The Cowsills were the inspiration for the TV show 'The Partridge Family'.
9. "Gentle On My Mind"

Answer: Bobbie Gentry and Glen Campbell

"Gentle On My Mind" was a solo number 39 on the Hot 100 in 1967 for Glen Campbell. The following year he sang it as a duet with Bobbie Gentry on an album that topped the US Billboard Top Country Albums chart.
10. "What The World Needs Now Is Love"

Answer: Jackie DeShannon

Hooray: our first Burt Bacharach and Hal David song in this quiz. In 1965 Jackie DeShannon took it to number seven on the Hot 100 and topped the charts in Canada.

Hal David came up with the lines "What the world needs now is love, sweet love. / It's the only thing that there's just too little of." It took him another two years to finish off the lyrics.

The song was offered first to Dionne Warwick, a regular singer of Bacharach/David songs, but she turned it down.
11. "You Never Can Tell (C'est La Vie)"

Answer: Chuck Berry

How this song only reached number 14 in the USA in 1964 is one of the abiding mysteries of sixties music.

Still, it became a staple for other musicians. Emmylou Harris had a US County charts number 6 in 1976, and Status Quo, Bruce Springsteen, John Prine, and Ronnie Lane all had a go.
12. "The Games People Play"

Answer: Joe South

"The Games People Play" was the biggest hit for Joe South, reaching number six in the UK and number 12 in the USA in 1968.

South did all the vocal parts and played all the instruments on the record. It won the Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Contemporary Song.
13. "Walkin' Back To Happiness"

Answer: Helen Shapiro

Helen Shapiro was aged just 14 when she recorded "Walkin' Back To Happiness". It topped the UK charts and was number 100 in the USA in 1961. It was also a number one in Ireland, New Zealand, Israel and South Africa.

The song was written by John Schroeder and Mike Hawker.
14. "You've Made Me So Very Happy"

Answer: Blood, Sweat & Tears

In 1969, Blood, Sweat & Tears took "You've Made Me So Very Happy" to number two on the Hot 100. Two years earlier, Brenda Holloway had a number 39 hit with the song, which she co-wrote.

In 1969, BS&T had three songs stall at number two on the Billboard charts.
15. "Move Over Darling"

Answer: Doris Day

"Move Over Darling" was the theme song of a 1963 movie of the same name. The single reached number eight in the UK

Between 1945 and 1967, Doris Day had 20 songs make the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100.
