Answer: If You Could Read My Mind

Gordon Lightfoot's original version of the track was a down-tempo soft rock song about the end of his marriage, released midway through the peak of a career which, while it spanned decades, was at its most popular from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. It would end up topping the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart in the U.S. and reach number five on the Billboard Hot 100 to become his most successful international single until "Sundown" released in 1975.

The song was covered in 1998 as a house banger for the film drama "54", based on Studio 54, by Stars on 54. Although the tone and energy of the song changed drastically with the new rendition, the reinterpretation ultimately opened the track up to a completely new and different audience as a result. It would outlast the film-- that's for sure.

Answer: Stay With Me

Releasing four studio albums, one annually starting in 1970, Faces featured Rod Stewart, Kenney Jones, and Ronnie Wood (who was already a member of the The Byrds by this point). Though most of the band was already quite successful before taking on this new venture, they persisted with Faces until their eventual break-up in 1974. By then, Stewart was already a major solo force. A year later, Wood would join The Rolling Stones, replacing Mick Taylor.

"Stay With Me" was the group's breakthrough track in the UK (reaching number six on the UK Singles Chart) though it would only hit number seventeen on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. It has since been covered by numerous bands and solo artists of varied genres including Def Leppard in the '80s, Train in the 2000s, and Mary J. Blige in the late 2010s.

Answer: Suburban Rock 'n' Roll

Hailing from Liverpool, Space found its peak in the 1990s with a pair of well-received albums in the UK that were, for lack of a better word, eclectic. Being seemingly unbound by genre confinement, both "Spiders" and "Tin Planet" were particularly praised for their lyrical humour and content variety.

"Suburban Rock 'n' Roll", as an album (their third), failed to hit the chart highs of Space's first two albums, and while it was well-regarded by listeners, it led the band to split up for a decade. They wouldn't resume recording until 2014's "Attack of the Mutant 50ft Kebab", after reuniting at a funeral for the band's original drummer, Andy Parle.

Answer: Ain't That a Shame

Perhaps the type of song you'd expect to hear playing in a diner or on a jukebox, the Fats Domino classic "Ain't That a Shame" is traditional 1950s rock and roll. Hitting the number one position on the U.S. Rhythm and Blues chart in 1955, it would be Fats' second such chart-topper after "Goin' Home" in 1952 and it would mark a long stride of hits that would continue through the 1950s.

Pat Boone's cover of the track, which released in the same year, hit number one on the Billboard charts and was, in fact, one of the top-played jukebox songs at its time of release (also per Billboard's numbers).

Answer: Under the Bridge

During work on the Red Hot Chili Peppers' fifth studio album, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", producer Rick Rubin found the lyrics to what would become "Under the Bridge" in Anthony Kiedis' notebook and insisted on including it as part of the record. What resulted was one of the band's greatest hits, kicking them onto the mainstream charts in earnest and bringing them up to number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The track would also be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

The music video for "Under the Bridge", directed by Gus Van Sant, would also receive accolades at the height of his arthouse success.

Answer: Eight Miles High

The Byrds were, ultimately, a versatile band over the decades, shifting their music between folk rock, country rock, psychedelic rock (in the mid-1960s), and poppier sounds, but their throughline was their Beatles-inspired harmonies. "Eight Miles High" was the start of their psychedelic era, pulling the jangly guitars and layered vocals together in the first single from their "Fifth Dimension" album, their third release.

"Eight Miles High" wouldn't hit the highs of their chart-topping cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man" or their original single, "Turn! Turn! Turn!" (partly because it was banned from radio play in the U.S.), but it would mark a shift in their output that would keep them a popular band throughout a time of counterculture and experimental music choices. Notably, the Byrds were invited to Woodstock in 1969, but never performed.

Answer: Disposable Heroes

While "Master of Puppets" never saw mainstream radio success due the fact that it was too heavy for most rock stations, it was a massively important album for the heavy metal/rock community, paving the way for the popularity and prolificacy of that sound and aesthetic coming out of the 1980s. "Master of Puppets" would go multiplatinum in the U.S. in quite short order, and "Disposable Heroes", clocking in at over eight minutes on the record, would be part of that. Though "Battery" and the title track may be better-known, "Disposable Heroes" commenced side two of the monumental release.

Interestingly, it's not a track that appeared often on the band's live setlists, despite fan popularity, possibly due to its intense tempo.

Answer: Giant Mistake

Although all of these answer options are debut singles for the band across their extensive career, "Giant Mistake" is one of their more well-known tracks, especially with the momentum that their third studio album, "A World Next Door to Yours", managed to maintain in the mid-2000s. Releasing in 2007, the album helped keep The Parlotones at the top of the South African charts following a 'Best Rock Album' South African Music Award (for "Radiocontrolledrobot"). It would subsequently go platinum in South Africa and open the door to international radio play.

Answer: The Adults Are Talking

The fourth single from the band's Grammy Award-winning sixth album, "The New Abnormal", "The Adults Are Talking" was the last track to get major alternative radio play but it did manage to do quite well for itself, hitting number eight on the Billboard Hot Rock & Alternative Songs Chart upon its release in late 2020.

In a year where the industry was knocked a bit askew by the COVID-19 pandemic, The Strokes still had quite the successful return-to-form with this album, even managing to perform this single (alongside "Bad Decisions") on "Saturday Night Live's" Halloween episode in 2020.

Answer: Dressed to Kill

Preston, originally a member of the UK indie band The Ordinary Boys, went solo for a period in the late 2000s and pushed "Dressed to Kill" as the sole single of his "Whatever Forever" album though it failed to chart. While he went on to have a successful songwriting career, rejoining the band in 2011 and appearing on "Celebrity Big Brother UK", the more successful version of the track went to Cher.

In 2013, Cher would release her twenty-fifth studio album, "Closer to the Truth", bringing a cover of the song onto the track list. While it wasn't released as one of the album's four official singles, "Dressed to Kill" would become a fixture in her 2014 Dressed to Kill Tour in North America.
