Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My choice for the worst song ever is a solo record which included these lyrics, sung by a member of a boy band family. What is the title of the song? "You'll be my lovely daisy on the mountainside There are lots of other flowers, too But all the other flowers hung their heads and cried Because the loveliest of all of them was you"

Answer: Long Haired Lover From Liverpool

Little Jimmy Osmond sung "Long Haired Lover From Liverpool" which was written by Christopher Kingsley, (Christopher Dowden on the UK release). It peaked at number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 for him in 1972. It was number one for five weeks on the UK Singles Chart in 1972/73.

If ever there was a song written to cash in on the name of Liverpool this was it. Since The Beatles led the chart invasion of the U.S.A. and everywhere else in 1964, along with many other groups, the city and especially the Cavern Club became world famous.

Little Jimmy Osmond was 9 years & 251 days old when the song topped the UK Singles chart on December 23, 1972.

2. My choice for worst song is the first solo number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for Michael Jackson. Please name this song about a rat.

Answer: Ben

"Ben" was the first song from Michael Jackson to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was for a movie of the same name about a boy's love for his pet rat. He was 14 at the time of the release, making him, in 1972, the third youngest artist ever to reach number one on that chart.

3. The song I really didn't like was written by a member of a very popular '60s band. What is the song with these lyrics? "Semolina pilchard, climbing up the Eiffel Tower Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna"

Answer: I Am the Walrus

"I Am the Walrus" was written by John Lennon and was credited to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The Beatles recorded and released it in 1967 on a single as the B-side for the song "Hello, Goodbye". It was also included on the UK double EP "Magical Mystery Tour" and the US album of the same name with added tracks.

When it was released I listened to all these people rave about the inner meanings of the lyrics but I just thought they were weird and gross! It wasn't until years later when I read that John Lennon had actually admitted to writing random lyrics as a way to mock those people who were always trying to find the inner or hidden meanings to all these Beatles song lyrics that I definitely felt vindicated.

4. Jerry Samuels, recording as Napoleon XIV, recorded the worst bunch of noise I ever heard. What was that song?

Answer: Aaaahahyawaemekatotgnimoceryeht

"Aaaahahyawaemekatotgnimoceryeht" which was the flipside of Napoleon XIV's hit, itself also a contender for the worst record, "They're Coming To Take Me Away Ha Haaa". "Aaaahahyawaemekatotgnimoceryeht" is the A-side spelled backwards. Worse though, is the fact that this is the A-side played and recorded backwards. It is an abomination.

"Oh Please Daddy" or "Ag Pleez Deddy" is a big selling song from South Africa.

"My Voice is Changing" and "Time After Time After Time After Time" are the A and B sides of a single from 1962 by 'Cowboy' Jack Clement.

All songs mentioned above are contenders for the worst song hall of fame.

5. My choice for worst song would be one originally recorded by the British rock band World Party in 1997, however it isn't that version, but the one recorded by Robbie Williams in 1998. What is the title of that song?

Answer: She's The One

In spite of the song winning the Ivor Novello Award in 1997, it was apparently written in ten minutes, by Karl Wallinger for World Party's fourth studio album, "Egyptology" (1997). It starts off with what sounds like a piano lesson from a bad pianist and then just goes to the vocal "She's the one", sung about 300 times. A really awful song, which was played on the radio constantly.

The Robbie Williams version was number one for one week on the UK Singles Chart in 1999. There were 36 number one hits in the UK in 1999 so the quality of number one hits was at a low ebb that year.

6. I love the Beatles and their solo music but there is one song written by George Harrison that I can't stand. Can you find the song from these lyrics? "There's a fog upon LA And my friends have lost their way 'We'll be over soon,' they said Now, they've lost themselves instead"

Answer: Blue Jay Way

"Blue Jay Way" was written by George Harrison about the time he spent in a house on Blue Jay Way in Hollywood Hills West, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A., in August 1967.

While staying at this house in Blue Jay Way, he was waiting for music publicist Derek Taylor to arrive. After a flight from London to Los Angeles, he was struggling to stay awake. I think that he should have filled his hot water bottle and gone to bed, had a psychedelic dream and wrote a better song.

The song was included on the UK double E.P. and US album, "Magical Mystery Tour", released in 1967.

7. I really like the original of this Suzanne Vega song. Two dance producers who go by the name DNA made a dance remix that was a global hit. I didn't like the remix of the song. Please name the song from the lyrics below. "I open up the paper There's a story of an actor Who had died while he was drinking It was no one I had heard of"

Answer: Tom's Diner

"Tom's Diner" from Suzanne's second album "Solitude Standing" was an a cappella song. Even though it was recorded in 1982, the album didn't come out until 1987. It did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 58 on the UK Singles Chart.

DNA featuring Suzanne Vega made the remix in 1990 and it became a much bigger hit than the original, due to dance club plays. It peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the UK Singles Chart. It was number one in Austria, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

8. This Gilbert O'Sullivan song was released in 1972. What is the title of this depressing song?

Answer: Alone Again (Naturally)

Gilbert O'Sullivan wrote the song "Alone Again (Naturally)" and recorded it in 1971 but in wasn't released until 1972. I could never figure out why it was such a hit because I always thought it was just very depressing! Obviously others felt differently because it was a hit across the globe reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart as well as US Adult Contemporary and Cash Box Top 100, number three on the UK Singles Chart and number one on charts in Canada and France.

This song was covered by several artists including Neil Diamond and Neil Sedaka.

The other choices aren't really songs, just names my sister and I thought would sound like really depressing song titles.

9. A song that makes me change the radio station every time I hear it is from the band Starship. This song is from their 1980s era. It hit number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in November of 1985. What is the song?

Answer: We Built This City

"We Built This City" was on their 1985 album release "Knee Deep in The Hoopla". It was written by songwriters Martin Page and Bernie Taupin. Bernie Taupin, who worked extensively with Elton John, said in an interview about the song, "It was a good little money earner."

Starship was formerly Jefferson Starship, and originally Jefferson Airplane, hailing from San Francisco from the late 1960s. There were two original members of Jefferson Airplane in Starship for this album: Paul Kantner and David Freiberg.

10. Another cringe worthy song for me is from the Jim Carroll Band, "People Who Died", which was released in 1980. This song has been used since in many television shows and movies. 1982 was the first year this song was featured in a movie or TV show; what movie was this song in?

Answer: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

The first known use of "People Who Died" in film or television was in Steven Spielberg's 1982 film "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial", opening the first scene with dialogue while the boys play "Dungeons & Dragons". The inclusion of "People Who Died" in "E.T." was a mix-up in the editing room. It was meant to be a temporary placeholder, but Spielberg liked the contrast and decided to keep it in the film.
