quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At number 9 in the gruesome top 100 was "Achy Breaky Heart", a hit in 1992. Who was responsible for this little gem?

Answer: Billy Ray Cyrus

Much ridicule was directed at the lyrics of "Achy Breaky Heart", which is possibly why it is now much hated. Jimmy Nail escaped the list but Michael Bolton was laughed at for "Can I Touch You...There" and Rednex "Cotton Eye Joe" was listed as no one seemed to know what the band were on about!
2. A cover version of "Against All Odds" managed to make the number 16 position in the top 100. Which singer and band did the dirty deed?

Answer: Mariah Carey and Westlife

Mariah Carey has sold millions of records, while Irish band Westlife had their first seven singles enter the UK charts at number one. "Against All Odds" was previously a hit for Phil Collins.
3. The song "Barbie Girl" was deemed bad enough to make the top 10 on the list. Claus, Soren, Rene and Lene were better known as who?

Answer: Aqua

Before disbanding in 2001, Aqua achieved three UK number ones, including the now mocked "Barbie Girl".
4. Middle Of The Road came in at number 62 in the horrid 100, with "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep". Where did the band come from?

Answer: Scotland

"Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" was number one for five long weeks back in 1971. The Scottish band seemed to like repeating words. Two of their other hits were "Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum" and "Soley Soley".
5. The oddly titled "Dick-A-Dum-Dum (Kings Road)" was voted as the 52nd worst pop record. Who sang this jolly little number?

Answer: Des O'Conner

Now a respected TV entertainer and talk show host, Des also had a hit single with another odd title, "One Two Three O'Leary" in the late sixties.
6. Even singers like Michael Jackson made records which have not stood the test of time. Which of Michael's hits came in at number 23 on the list?

Answer: "Earth Song"

In retrospect, many people now deem "Earth Song" to be a bit of a pompous record, although it had no trouble reaching number one for Michael in 1995.
7. Lindisfarne re-recorded their classic "Fog On The Tyne" song in 1990, gaining themselves a number two hit single in the process. Time has not been kind to them however, and the song was voted in at 43 on the list of most hated records. Who joined Lindisfarne on that re-issue?

Answer: Gazza

Footballer Paul Gascoine (or "Gazza" as he liked to be known) did not really bring anything new to "Fog On The Tyne", apart from some rather dodgy attempts at singing! Paul McCartney, along with the Frog Chorus, earned himself a place in the 100 with "We All Stand Together".
8. Once people found out that Milli Vanilli did not actually sing on their hits, they stopped buying their records. Which song by the hapless duo got itself a mention at number 53 in the dastardly 100?

Answer: "Girl You Know It's True"

"Girl You Know It's True" was a number three hit in 1988. Member Rob Pilatus died in 1998.
9. "It's too wet!". "It's too soppy!". "That video!" were just a few of the comments directed towards a song called "Hello". It was actually a number one hit back in 1984 for whom?

Answer: Lionel Richie

It's strange how some songs just seem to lose their appeal over time. "Hello" was number one for six weeks in the UK, so a lot of people must have really liked it then!
10. Kylie Minogue was not always considered the "Princess Of Pop". Her first hit, "I Should Be So Lucky" was a huge number one for her in 1988. It's now on the list of the woeful 100. Did the recording of "Especially For You", her hit with Jason Donovan, also get a mention as one of the worst pop records of all time?

Answer: No

Jason Donovan, who, of course, was also in "Neighbours" with Kylie, managed to escape being nominated for any bad records. "I Should Be So Lucky" just sounds annoying after all these years!
11. "Just Say No" trilled the cast of the children's drama "Grange Hill" in 1986. Seventeen years later the public said "And just say no to terrible records" and put this at number 39 in the grim 100. But just what were the young cast saying no to back then?

Answer: Drugs

"Just Say No" followed on from a drugs related storyline in the long running drama for children. Most of the children could act, but not all of the children could sing.
12. Little Jimmy Osmond told us he would be our "Long Haired Lover From Liverpool" way back in 1972. We have all got long memories however, and put Little Jimmy at number 35 in the fearsome 100. Do you remember the title of Little Jimmy's other top ten hit?

Answer: "Tweedle Dee"

Jimmy's brother Donny was responsible for a cover of "Puppy Love" which got him into the worst 100 with Jimmy. David Bowie was also nominated for "The Laughing Gnome", and Natalie Casey earned her place in the 100 with "Chick, Chick, Chicken".
13. Many former number one hits made that list of 100 horrors, including "My Heart Will Go On" from 1998. Who had the hit we would all now like to forget?

Answer: Celine Dion

Too easy! From "Titanic" in case you had forgotten.
14. At number 26 on the awful 100 was a song called "No Way No Way", much remembered for the fact that the band, four young females, could not really sing that well. Who were they?

Answer: Vanilla

Surprisingly, the girls did manage another hit single with the little remembered "True To Us". Nothing has been heard of them since!
15. True Steppers, Dane Bowers and an ex-Spice Girl gave us the 54th song on the list of shame. "Out Of Your Mind" was actually a number two hit in the year 2000, but who was the former Spice Girl who helped it achieve notoriety?

Answer: Victoria Beckham

"Out Of Your Mind" was not really a truly awful record, and seems to be most remembered for the fact that Spiller and "Groovejet" kept it off the number one spot in 2000.
16. Quite a lot of the songs that appeared in the horrible 100 were former number one hits. And quite a lot of them were performed by current or former soap stars. "Perfect Moment", voted in at number 65, came under both these categories. Can you name the guilty actress?

Answer: Martine McCutcheon

Martine played Tiffany Mitchell in "Eastenders", before leaving to try her hand in the music business. She achieved a number one with her first single, and it now joins the ranks of worst records ever. Anita Dobson is also a former Eastender, who joins Martine on that top 100 list with her vocal version of the "Eastenders" theme.
17. Just creeping into the 100 at number 98 come the duo of Chas and Dave, who treated us to a song called "Rabbit" in 1980. What were the surnames of Chas and Dave?

Answer: Hodges and Peacock

Chas and Dave, with their Cockney knees-up type of music, have graced the UK charts on a few occasions, with "Rabbit" being their fourth hit in 1980. Hoddle and Waddle were the surnames of footballers Glenn and Chris, whose "Diamond Lights" hit appeared on the most hated list too.
18. Covering a classic like "Suspicious Minds" can be a bad idea. Certainly so for the artist who was voted number 32 in our list of torture. Who was guilty of a bad cover version?

Answer: Gareth Gates

Gareth must like covering old songs, as he has also tackled "Spirit In The Sky" and "Unchained Melody", both of which made number one in the charts.
19. The Tweets blessed us with the dreaded "Birdie Song" back in 1981. We got our revenge by voting it the 31st worst pop song ever. Did it actually reach number one when first hatched?

Answer: No

No, thank goodness, but it did reach number two. People everywhere were doing that somewhat strange dance, happily flapping their arms like demented chickens !
20. "The Lady In Red" was number one in the UK charts for three whole weeks in 1986. Time has not been kind to this song either, as it was voted number 24 on the horrors list. Who probably will not appreciate the honour?

Answer: Chris de Burgh

Irishman Chris is also known for his Christmas hit "A Spaceman Came Travelling" and the number three hit "Missing You".
21. Another classic that possibly should not be covered by anyone is "Unchained Melody". Who did such a terrible job that it was voted 41st worst pop song?

Answer: Robson and Jerome

Actors Robson Green and Jerome Flynn achieved number one with their first three singles, all of which were cover versions.
22. At number 92 on the list of shame was a tasty song by Fat Les. What was the title of this former number two hit?

Answer: "Vindaloo"

The Fast Food Rockers joined Fat Les on the list of shame with the "Fast Food Song", which was a hit in 2003, making it the youngest song to be nominated.
23. Poor old Starship. They got themselves a hit single in the 80s, and we then decided it was one of the worst songs ever made. Which one of this band's hits don't some of us like anymore?

Answer: "We Built This City"

Not an obvious choice for a chart such as this, as it does not feature any ex-soap opera actors and is not a novelty song. I did not think it was that bad! Other songs that seem a bit out of place on the list include "Love Is All Around" by Wet Wet Wet and "Believe" by Cher.
24. Much loved by holidaymakers in the 1970s, "Y Viva Espana" is now much reviled. (Possibly by those same, now embarrassed, holidaymakers) Who was cruel enough to inflict this merry little tune upon us?

Answer: Sylvia

Joining Sylvia in the chart of shame are Whigfield, whose "Saturday Night" drove everyone mad in 1994 with what sounds like a quacking duck in the background. Renee and Renato made the list for "Save Your Love" and Sabrina with "Boys (Summertime Love)".
25. If you could bear to watch the show or even if the thought gave you nightmares and you just read all about in the press, you will possibly know who has the stigma of having the "worst pop song ever made" haunting them forever. And the winner is....

Answer: The Cheeky Girls

Aw, bless them! The twins from Romania, Gabriella and Monica, were former "Pop Idol" contestants who made people laugh so much that their audition song, "Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum)" was released as a single. It just missed the top spot in 2002. The girls have also had other hit singles and treated us to an album of songs, mostly with the word "Cheeky" somewhere in the title. I'm sure we have not heard the last of them yet! It's worth pointing out that at the end of the day it's all down to individual taste. Most of us could name a few songs that we think should have made the list, and a few of us could choose songs that should not have made the list as we actually liked them!
