"The Way It Was" is the third track from the album, "Battle Born" which was released on September 17, 2012 in the UK. Although the track has never been released as a single, it has become one of the band's favourite songs as well as with the fans. The lead singer and frontman Brandon Flowers has said the song should have been, in hindsight, released as a single. While playing live gigs and touring, they have sung the song hundreds of times to the delight of the fans.

"The Way It Was" tells the story of a man who, after a breakup, is travelling across a desert, thinking back on the past and questioning whether his relationship might have been saved. With the query, "Could it be the way it was?", the song tackles themes of regret, remembrance, and the longing to relive a lost feeling of a previous relationship.

The band recorded the album at two recording studios, Battle Born (Las Vegas, Nevada) and Blackbird (Nashville, Tennessee). The album topped the charts on the UK Albums Chart and also topped the charts on the US Top Rock Albums (Billboard).

The main album has 12 tracks, and there is also a deluxe edition which has three bonus songs, "Carry Me Home", "Flesh and Bone" (Jacques Lu Cont remix), and "Prize Fighter". At some selected retailers, there is also an exclusive edition which has two more songs, "Be Still" (alternate version) and "Runaways" (Michel remix).

The Killers were formed in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2001. Between 2002 and 2025 the members of the band were Brandon Flowers, Dave Keuning, Ronnie Vannucci Jr. and Mark Stoermer. The debut album by the band was "Hot Fuss", released in 2004, which was a number one hit for the band in the UK, while on the US Billboard it stalled at number seven on the chart.
