Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "And someone will drive her around down the same streets that I did."

Answer: Smile Like You Mean It

The least-charting single released from "Hot Fuss", "Smile Like You Mean It" was released as the fourth promotional track from the album, appearing on radios in 2005 and marking the end of the band's first hit disc. Reaching number eleven on the UK Singles Chart and number fifteen on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart, the song hits the middle spot for energy between the previous three singles, acting as a mid-tempo alternative to their existing hits.

It would still end up making it to the band's first Greatest Hits release, "Direct Hits".
2. "I never really gave up on breaking out of this two-star town."

Answer: Read My Mind

Almost Springsteenian in tone, "Read My Mind" brought The Killers, more than most tracks, into a rock and roll aesthetic that could only be expected by a band coming from Las Vegas. With an abundance of synth and harder rock as the song builds, "Read My Mind" proved to be a popular and well-received track by listeners and critics alike.

The music video went a different direction; while "When You Were Young" and "Bones" kept the album's themes in the U.S. desert, "Read My Mind", considered the band's favourite song at the time, was filmed in Tokyo.
3. "We can't wait 'til tomorrow."

Answer: Runaways

After "Day & Age", The Killers went on a brief hiatus while their members pursued solo projects for the first time, and in 2012, four years later, they released "Battle Born", a return to the heartland hard rock sound they'd brought to life in "Sam's Town". "Runaways" was the first track to emerge as a single from that (followed by "Miss Atomic Bomb") and it certainly returned the band to the desert aesthetic-- it's the type of song that plays on the interstate.

It hit number eleven on the U.S. Adult Alternative Songs chart and number eighteen in the UK.
4. "There is a place that exists. Just give it some time."

Answer: Boy

Topping the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart in the U.S. upon its release as a standalone single in 2022, "Boy" was written before The Killers released "Pressure Machine" in 2021. Singer Brandon Flowers claims that the track was a catalyst for the concept album, but the band left it off intentionally to maintain the aesthetic and flow of the setlist.

It managed to chart higher than any song from "Pressure Machine", partly because of the band's choice not to send out any of the tracks as promotional singles.
5. "Nothing can break me down."

Answer: The Man

The first single from the band's fifth album, "Wonderful Wonderful", "The Man" helped The Killers achieve their first number one album on the U.S. Billboard 200 (and it would top the charts in the UK as well) upon its release in 2017. "The Man" pushed more pop-rock than anything from "Battle Born" and proved to be a crossover hit on the charts. Though it didn't make a significant spot on the UK Singles Chart (unlike their earlier singles), it did manage number two on the Billboard U.S. Adult Alternative Songs chart.
6. "But my heart, it don't beat, it don't beat the way it used to."

Answer: For Reasons Unknown

The fourth and final single from "Sam's Town", "For Reasons Unknown" didn't make much of a dent on any charts but it remained a lasting rock track with an infectious build that made it perfect for concert play. The Killers have had a tradition, in live shows, of bringing a drummer up from the audience to perform the song alongside the band instead of band member Ronnie Vannucci Jr. Though the track wasn't promoted it reached number fifty-eight on the UK Singles Chart.
7. "...Or are we dancer?"

Answer: Human

In 2008, The Killers pushed into their third studio album, "Day & Age", which took them out of the heartland rock they'd started leaning into and brought them more into a synth pop-rock sound they'd never explored quite so much in their earlier works. "Human" was the first single from the album, and it was created as the band released their B-sides album, "Sawdust", a mere year earlier.

It would end up being a defining track, allowing the band to ease into this new era. It managed number three on the UK Singles Chart and number three on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart in the U.S.
8. "Hard-working people, if you're in trouble, they'll lend you a hand."

Answer: Quiet Town

During COVID-19, The Killers went back to work in the studio almost as soon as they could, intending to create more music in lieu of being unable to tour for their "Imploding the Mirage" album (released in 2020). What resulted was another concept album about American heartland life-- "Pressure Machine" released quietly to the internet in late 2021 with no promotional singles to its name. Nonetheless, "Quiet Town" took the number nine spot on the Adult Alternative Airplay Billboard chart.

"Pressure Machine" marked the seventh consecutive number one album on the UK Albums Chart; it took number nine on the Billboard 200.
9. "I got soul, but I'm not a soldier."

Answer: All These Things That I've Done

Another platinum track for The Killers, "All These Things That I've Done" became a hit for the band after its release as the third single from their debut album, "Hot Fuss". Anthemic, the song is a major one for concert-goers, with a repeated bridge (the lyric in question) being one to drive arena audiences.

It hit number one on the Canada Rock Top 30 chart, but only number ten on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart in the U.S. and number eighteen on the UK Singles Chart.
10. "It's all in your mind."

Answer: Spaceman

The second of four singles from "Day & Age", "Spaceman" was perhaps the most upbeat song from the album and the weirdest of the bunch. Though it only hit number forty on the UK Singles Chart and number seventeen on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs in the U.S., it was quite well-regarded as more of a new wave take on a Killers track.

It might come as no surprise that it also made it onto dance airplay charts in America. The song was followed by "The World We Live In" and "A Dustland Fairytale" as singles, but neither fared quite as well.
11. "I'm coming out of my cage and I've been doing just fine."

Answer: Mr. Brightside

Going multi-platinum internationally, "Mr. Brightside" seemed to be a breakout unlike so many others before it. The band's first major single, it first released off "Hot Fuss" in 2003 and was subsequently re-released a year later, not only becoming a massive hit in the U.S., but becoming one of the most downloaded songs in the UK and the longest-charting single on the UK Singles Chart Top 100.

It ended up appearing on six different U.S. Billboard charts though it peaked at number ten on the Hot 100.

Naturally, it's considered the band's signature track.
12. "He doesn't look a thing like Jesus."

Answer: When You Were Young

Coming out of the immensely popular "Hot Fuss", The Killers pushed out their sophomore release, "Sam's Town", only two years later in 2006, bringing with them an ear for rock and roll sensibility by leaning into the concept of a heartland concept album. "When You Were Young", the first single, was massive for the group, charting on ten different Billboard charts in the U.S. and peaking at number one on the Alternative Airplay chart (it would hit number two on the UK Singles Chart).

The song was a presumed frontrunner for the Grammy for Best Rock Song, but it would lose to "Dani California" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
13. "...you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend..."

Answer: Somebody Told Me

"Somebody Told Me" actually managed to outdo the band's previous single, "Mr. Brightside", on a number of metrics, likely because the track ended up riding the success of their debut to chart higher in most countries. Peaking at number three on the UK Singles Chart and number three on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart in the U.S., is an uptempo rock song amongst the best, critically, of the mid-2000s.

The song helped define The Killers' early sound and became an almost-instant radio hit and live concert staple.
14. "Tonight the winds of change are blowin' wild and free."

Answer: Caution

As the world headed into COVID-19 lockdowns, "Caution" released as a single from what would have been The Killers' imminent sixth album, "Imploding the Mirage". Despite the obvious road block, it ended up being a modest rock hit for 2020, showing on five different U.S. Billboard charts (and topping the US Rock Airplay chart).

It helped the disc make it to number eight on the Billboard 200 chart when it finally did release in August 2020. The Killers wouldn't be able to tour for it for another two years, by which point they'd already have released another album ("Pressure Machine" in August 2021).
15. "I know you're not the only one."

Answer: Run for Cover

Although originally written for the band's third album, "Day & Age", back in 2008, "Run For Cover" finally saw the light of day when The Killers released "Wonderful Wonderful" nine years later; it acted as the second single from the album. A propulsive rock track, the song ended up being critically lauded with most seeing it as a return to form for the band akin to their earliest big hits.

It took the number twenty slot on the Billboard U.S. Adult Alternative Songs chart. The single to proceed it, "Rut", was the last single from the album and it failed to chart in the States.
