Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the meaning of "Malachi"?

Answer: Messenger

In Hebrew, "Malachi" translates as "Messenger". At the time the book was written it was not a proper name. Interestingly, the first verse was written as "A prophecy: The word of the Lord to Israel through Malachi." (1:1). As with other quotes, this quote comes from the New International Version translation of the Bible.
2. The Book of Malachi is relatively short. How many chapters is it?

Answer: 3 in the Hebrew Bible and Septuagint, 4 in the Catholic and Protestant translations

In the Hebrew version of the Bible and the Septuagint, there are three chapters. In the Catholic and Protestant translations of the Bible, the final six verses of the book were separated to create a fourth chapter. In either case, the book was part of the shorter books of the Minor Prophets.
3. Approximately when was the Book of Malachi written?

Answer: After the Babylonian Captivity

The Babylonian Captivity refers to the period after the Babylonian conquest of the Kingdom of Judah (c. 587 BCE). The captivity lasted approximately 60 years. It is believed that the Book of Malachi was written several decades later. Some portions of the book may have been modified during the Hellenistic Period after the death of Alexander the Great (c. 323 BCE).
4. Who is it suggested wrote the Book of Malachi?

Answer: Ezra the Scribe

Ezra the Scribe was a main character in the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah. In addition, he is traditionally associated with the two Books of Chronicles. He was seen as an important Jewish leader in the period after the Babylonian Captivity. He was a priest of Israel in addition to being a scribe.
5. Which best summarizes what God says in the first chapter?

Answer: He loves Jacob, but not Esau

"Yet I have loved Jacob, but Esau I have hated." (1:2). It is suggested that this is more a case of choosing Jacob over Esau. It is thought that the two men were a stand-in for the people they represented: the Israelites and the Edomites, respectively.
6. What is NOT an example of "defiled food" that should NOT be offered in sacrifice (1:7)?

Answer: Deaf

The first chapter of Malachi specifically says not to offer an animal who is diseased, blind, or lame in sacrifice. No comment is made for or against an animal who is deaf. The implication is that officials would not be pleased with such a damaged offering.
7. What will the Lord do in return for not being honored by the priests (2:3)?

Answer: Smear them with animal droppings

The Lord has previously accused the priests of not showing him honor. The priests will find themselves cursed. In addition, the priests will find themselves smeared with animal dung. In my opinion, this is not the punishment that is the most deadly, but it does show the greatest contempt.
8. In the second chapter of the Book of Malachi, is divorce cited as a religious problem or a social problem?

Answer: Both

The Book of Malachi addresses both problems. The potential divorcee is criticized for turning to foreign wives. The divorcee is also criticized for "faithlessness". In general, individuals should be faithful to the wife of (your) youth.
9. Which patriarchal figure is mentioned in the final chapter of the Book of Malachi?

Answer: Moses

Perhaps this makes sense since overall Moses is very important to the Old Testament story. The chapter also makes an unflattering comparison between priests of the past and priests of the then-present. The later priests are accused of allowing the people to stumble and fall.
10. Where does the Book of Malachi come among the Minor Prophets?

Answer: Twelfth

There are twelve Minor Prophets, so Malachi comes at the end of that section of the Old Testament. Only the Books of the Maccabees (not included in many Protestant Bibles) follow in the Old Testament. That makes the fiery words of the last chapter the final ones of the Old Testament.
