Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first woman to be described as beautiful in the Bible is Sarah. Who was her husband? (Genesis 12:14)

Answer: Abraham

Abraham is the correct answer. At the time, he was known as Abram and his wife Sarah was known as Sarai. Genesis 12 tells of the couple being in Egypt, with Abram fearing for his life as he expected that the Pharaoh would take Sarai to be part of his harem because of her beauty. With this being the case, Abram would be killed by the Pharaoh. So Abram and Sarai pretended to be brother and sister. Sarai was forced to live with the Pharaoh but at least Abram's life was spared.

Later Abram and Sarai would be reunited. Genesis 12:17 says the reunion took place after the LORD "plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife."

After becoming known as Abraham and Sarah, they would miraculously become parents of Isaac, this even though they were elderly.
2. Rebekah, the wife of Isaac, is described as "very beautiful". Who was her father, as per Genesis 22:23?

Answer: Bethuel

Rebekah was the daughter of Bethuel and the sister of Laban, according to Scripture. In Genesis 24:16, Rebekah is described as "very beautiful". After marrying Isaac, she would give birth to twin sons -- Esau and Jacob.
3. Rachel was beautiful and she and her sister were married to the same man. However, their husband did not find Rachel's sister attractive, it seems. What was her sister's name?

Answer: Leah

Poor Leah. She apparently ended up in an a loveless marriage with her beautiful sister Rachel married to the same man. Rachel got all the attention from Jacob and Leah ended up simply being a wife on the sidelines -- this even though she was the mother of six sons and one daughter. Leah's six sons were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun and the daughter was Dinah.

According to Genesis 29:17, Leah's eyes were "delicate", but Rachel was "beautiful of form and appearance". Genesis 29:30 goes on to state Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah.
4. Scripture tells of David having an adulterous affair with a "very beautiful" woman who was married to another man. What was her name? (2 Samuel 11:2)

Answer: Bathsheba

David had an adulterous affair with Bathsheba after he was on the roof of the royal palace and spotted her bathing. According to Scripture, David orchestrated the death of Bathsheba's husband, Uriah, after she became pregnant as a result of the affair.

In 2 Samuel 11:2 Bathsheba is described as "very beautiful to behold."
5. Abigail was a wife of King David and is described as beautiful. However, before her marriage to the king, she had been married to a man who is described as a fool. What was the name of Abigail's first husband?

Answer: Nabal

Nabal and Abigail were opposites, it seems. In 1 Samuel 25:3, Abigail is described as being "of good understanding and beautiful in appearance" while her husband Nabal was "harsh and evil in his doings."

Meanwhile, in 1 Samuel 25:25 in the NIV, Abigail describes Nabal as a fool.

After Nabal's death, a case of divine retribution, she became a wife of David.
6. Scripture tells of King Ahasuerus being married to a beautiful woman. However, she ended up being dethroned when she refused a request of the king to display her beauty to a gathering of people at a gala banquet. What was her name, as per Esther 1:11?

Answer: Vashti

Vashti ended up being dethroned after she refused a request of the king to wear her crown and display her beauty to people who were attending a gala reception hosted by King Ahasuerus. (In the NIV, the king is known as Xerxes.)

When Vashti refused the king's request, Scripture tells of him burning with anger and then dumping her as queen. As a result, Esther would ascend to become queen. In Esther 2:7 she is described as "lovely and beautiful."

Scripture goes on to tell of Esther playing a key role in preventing Haman from carrying out an evil plan to kill all the Jews in the empire ruled by Ahasuerus.
7. What man had three daughters in the Old Testament who were all beautiful? (Their names were Jemimah, Keziah and Keren-Happuch.)

Answer: Job

Job's three daughters are described as "the most beautiful in all the land", as per Job 32:15. The verse goes on to state their father "gave them an inheritance among their brothers."

The three daughters were born after Job lost seven sons and three daughters, as well as all of his possessions, as documented in Job 1. According to Job 42, the Lord also blessed him with seven sons and more material wealth than he had before.
8. The first king of Israel is described in Scripture as being extremely handsome. What was his name? (1 Samuel 9:2)

Answer: Saul

Saul is the correct answer. According to Scripture he was the most handsome man in all of Israel.

1 Samuel 9:2 explains things this way: "There was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people."
9. What king of Israel is described as "ruddy with bright eyes and good looking", as per 1 Samuel 16:12?

Answer: David

David had many things going for him, including good looks. In 1 Samuel 16:12, David is described this way: "Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking."

In addition to being handsome, David had beautiful wives, including Bathsheba and Abigail.
10. One of the son's of David is described as being handsome "from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head." What was his name, as per 2 Samuel 14:25?

Answer: Absalom

According to Scripture, Absalom was without equal in all of Israel.
2 Samuel 14:25 states: "Now in all Israel there was no one who was praised as much as Absalom for his good looks. From the sole of his foot to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him."

Absalom may have been handsome, but he was determined to rise to the top, even if it meant killing his father David.

Scripture tells of Absalom attempting to become king, with Israel plunged into a bloody civil war. The war came to a sudden end when Absalom was killed by Joab, the commander of David's army.
