Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Old Order Amish people reject most technology. Which of the following modern innovations might they be willing to use?

Answer: a bicycle

The Amish are well known for their horse-drawn carriages because they choose not to use vehicles propelled by internal combustion engines. Bicycles, however, because they are propelled by human labour, are acceptable and popular. Almost all electrical devices are forbidden; a rare exception may be one telephone owned by the community for the necessary use of anyone in an emergency. Amish women are famous for their quilts; part of the charm is that they are entirely hand stitched.

The point to all of this, from an Amish perspective, is to keep one's self as unconnected from the world as possible, in order to concentrate better on the things of the spirit.

2. When Constantine's mother, Helena, ordered the destruction of the pagan temple the Roman emperor Hadrian had built on the site of Calvary in Jerusalem, what is believed to have been discovered on the site?

Answer: All of these

The Empress Helena (250-330) was the mother of Constantine the Great (272-337), under whose reign Christianity became Rome's dominant faith. Helena herself was a deeply pious woman, and, on a visit to Jerusalem in the year 326, she ordered the demolition of a pagan temple that the earlier Roman Emperor Hadrian (76-138) had built to honour the Roman goddess, Venus. Hadrian had ordered this temple built on the Calvary, the site outside Jerusalem's walls where Jesus Christ had earlier been crucified. During the demolition process, it is believed that the three crosses used on that great day, the Holy Tunic (the seamless robe worn by Jesus before his death) and the Holy Nails used during his crucifixion were located.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre stands on this site today.

It is believed to contain a small portion of the True Cross. Myriad pieces of the rest of the Cross are believed to be held in various sites all around the world; several places claim to possess the Holy Tunic; and the Holy nails are believed to have been incorporated into Constantine's helmet and the bridle of his horse for protection in battle.

5. Which newspaper was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1908, and carries on in both print and electronic editions?

Answer: Christian Science Monitor

Despite the name of the newspaper, the 'Christian Science Monitor' is not at all concentrated on religious topics, nor does its writing bring a Christian Science point of view to the news reported. The newspaper was conceived as an antidote to the shrill irresponsible hysterical journalism of the age in which it was born.

It has since earned a reputation for serious, non-inflammatory reportage. Economic considerations forced it to change from daily publication to weekly.

6. In the Bible, who were Noah's three sons?

Answer: Shem, Ham and Japheth

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were Daniel's companions who were cast into the fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar. Reuben, Simeon and Levi were Jacob's sons. Athos, Portos and Aramis are main characters from Dumas' The Three Musketeers.

7. The story of Noah is told in various forms in the sacred literature of many religions. In which of the following does it not appear in any form?

Answer: L. Ron Hubbard's practice of Dianetics

The Hebrew story of Noah is told in Genesis 5-9. An Islamic version is told in the Quran in several places; Noah is named Nuh in Arabic. Nuh is one of the five principal prophets of Islam. The Bahá'í Faith accepts the story of the flood and the ark but interprets it as a spiritual allegory. They teach that Noah, his family and his followers were spiritually alive while those who rejected his teaching were dead. The story of Noah and the Ark does not figure in Scientology.

8. In Islam, what is the only sin that Allah will not forgive?

Answer: Idolatry

Tawhid, meaning "oneness (of God)", is at the core of Islam: it is the emblem at the center of the flag of Iran. Idolatry or polytheism is a sin "most heinous indeed". "God does not forgive that partners should be set up with Him but He forgives anything less than that to whomever He wills" (both quotes from Surah 4:48).

9. The phrase "mene, mene, tekel, parsin" is a Biblical reference, taken from the book of Daniel. That phrase was the origin of what modern-day saying?

Answer: The writing on the wall.

"Mene, mene, tekel, parsin" (or pharshn, or u-pharsin) literally references three Aramaic types of currency. But, according to Daniel, these words were written on the wall of the royal palace by a disembodied hand while King Belshazzar and his court held a feast. Daniel interprets the words as prophesying the downfall of Babylon, and, that night, King Belshazzar is slain.

Hence the origin of the phrase "writing on the wall" meaning a portent of doom or imminent downfall.

10. In the Holy Bible, there are many place names beginning with "Beth-" such as Bethel, Bethlehem and Bethphage. What does "beth" mean in this context?

Answer: house, dwelling, tent

The English meaning of the Hebrew "beth" can be house, place, dwelling, or tent. It combines, like a prefix in German, with another noun to create place names in the Bible. Thus Bethel is the house of God (Genesis 35:1; Amos 5:5-6); Bethlehem is the house of bread (Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:1); Bethphage is the house of figs (Matthew 2:1).
