Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Paul tell the Philippians what he does "upon every remembrance of you" in Philippians 1:3, according to the King James Version?

Answer: thank my God

The book of Philippians is one of Paul's prison epistles. That is he wrote this (along with Ephesians, Colossians, and Philemon) while in prison. This is one of the most encouraging books in the Bible. I love that Paul, who was in prison not knowing what was going to happen to him, was writing to encourage others during this time.
2. Fill in the words in the correct order to complete Philippians 1:21 from the King James Version: "For to me to _______ is Christ and to ______ is gain."

Answer: live, die

Paul is explaining why, despite the fact he is in prison and does not know what will happen, he can rejoice. He is saying that, if he lives, he can continue preaching the Gospel (to live is Christ), and if he doesn't live, then he will gain, because then he will be with Christ.

He says in the next couple of verses that while it is hard to decide between life and death with these choices, he says it's better to be with Jesus than to be here preaching about Jesus.
3. In Philippians 2:3 (KJV), Paul is asking people to do what to other people?

Answer: Respect and admire them

Paul says in Philippians 2:3 (KJV), "Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." In other words, don't cut people down, but respect them, and build them up more than you build yourself up.
4. Complete Philippians 2:8 in the KJV: "And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the _______."

Answer: cross

According to the Bible, Jesus was innocent, yet sentenced to death. It is believed by many that crucifixion is the worst possible way to die, this is why Paul says "even" when he refers to dying on the cross. He is saying, not only did Jesus willingly die, but he willingly died in the worse possible manner.
5. In Philippians 2:9 (KJV) what does Paul say about the name God has given Jesus?

Answer: It's above every name

Paul goes on in the next verse to say that this name is so powerful that people (the verse specifically used the words "every tongue") are going to confess that the name of Jesus is Lord one day. Paul does not say when this will happen as far as a specific date and time, he just says it will one day happen. Millenialist Christians believe this will happen during the Thousand Year Reign of Christ after the Tribulation period.
6. In Philippians 3:14 (KJV) Paul says, "I press toward the mark for the _________ of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." What word goes in the blank?

Answer: prize

Paul has been telling them in the previous thirteen verses of Philippians Chapter three that he knows what it's like to be a Pharisee persecuting Christians, and he knows what it's like to be persecuted as a Christian. However, he is trying to encourage them not to give up but to focus on that prize ahead which is "the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." Or in other words, "Guys, don't quit, remember who you're doing this for, and it's all worth it" (my paraphrase).
7. According to Paul in Philippians 3:20-21 what does he say Jesus will one day change?

Answer: our vile body

Paul states that there are people who are against God and in verse eighteen refers to them as "enemies of the cross," and says in verse nineteen that "their end is destruction." He continues to talk about believers and says that Jesus will change their "vile bodies" to be like "His glorious body."
8. Philippians 4:4 (KJV): "_____ in the Lord alway: and again, I say, _____." What word goes in the blanks?

Answer: Rejoice

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary to rejoice means to feel great joy. The original Greek word (the language in which the New Testament was originally written) that the KJV Bible translates as rejoice was, according to Strong's 'Concordance', a form of the root word "chairo", and means experiencing God's grace (favor).
9. According to Philippians 4:6 (KJV), how much should you let God know about your needs?

Answer: Everything

Paul says in Philippians 4:6, "Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." The word supplication means to ask humbly; in other words, Paul is saying to ask God for anything, but do it humbly. God is not your personalized genie in the bottle. You are not to demand and order God around.
10. What are the first four words Paul uses in verse eight of things to "think on" in the correct order in Philippians 4:8 of the King James Version?

Answer: true, honest, just, pure

Philippians 4:8 (KJV) states, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

Paul is telling the church at Philippi that there are a lot of bad things in the world. So what they need to do is focus on the good things, and fill their minds with that stuff not all the negative stuff, because there is plenty of negative stuff out there already, and it's going to get to them. Paul is trying to prepare them to face a world that is difficult, often filled with negativity and hard. I believe these words apply today, and the world is still difficult, often filled with troublesome, arduous, and cynical things that life throws at us.
