Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the 'CT' stand for in the term CT scan?

2. What word is used to describe a physical pain in the neck?

Answer: Crick

A crick in the neck refers to pain and/or stiffness caused when the muscles at the side or back of the neck go into spasm or cramp. The condition can come on if someone twists their neck round quickly, wrenches it or by the neck staying at an awkward angle for a while, for instance when sleeping in an unusual position.

The crick may disappear after a week or so but can sometimes last for a long while and sufferers often find it hard to move their neck. There is no known cure but symptoms can be alleviated by taking painkillers, by holding hot or cold treatment packs against the affected area, by doing some gentle stretching exercises and by using a low firm pillow.

3. Which ancient art of healing involves the insertion of needles at various points, believed to be where qi (vital energy) flows?

Answer: acupuncture

The Chinese have been using acupuncture as a method of reducing pain and promoting healing for centuries. Archaeologists have discovered what they believed to be acupuncture needles (made out of stone) from as far back as 3000 B.C.
Documented evidence of acupuncture has been found in the "Classic of Internal Medicine (History of Acupuncture)", which dates back to 305-204 B.C.

4. What part of the body is affected when one is afflicted with overbite?

Answer: the jaw and teeth

Malocclusion is any type of dental misalignment which affects the bite. Overbite is a particular form of malocclusion in which the upper front teeth protrude beyond the lower front teeth. This is called colloquially having "buck teeth." A minor overbite may cause no problems.

A pronounced overbite may cause breathing difficulty, tooth decay, gum disease, difficulty chewing, jaw (TMD) pain, and speech problems. The condition can be caused by excessive thumb-sucking and pacifier use in small children, bruxism (grinding the teeth), and tongue thrust. Treatment of an overbite differs between children and adults. Braces are often helpful. Only in the most severe cases is surgery necessary.

5. The severe pain you have in your foot is due to a large bunion, your doctor says. How might you expect your bunion to be treated?

Answer: Surgical removal of the bunion

A bunion is a deformity of the joint of the big toe. It causes the big toe to point inward and can be quite painful. While splints and avoiding high heel shoes may help, if severe enough, it must be surgically removed (bunionectomy).

Goat's head and pea line are slang terms for other tools.
