Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With a set of numbers, which of these can be more than one answer?

Answer: Mode

The mode is the most occurring number in a data set. But it's possible that you could have multiple numbers repeated. For example, the set of 1,1,3,3,5,5 would have three modes (1,3 and 5). We call this trimodal. In that set, the mean (average) is 3, the median (middle number) is 3, and the range is 4 since it's the difference between the biggest and smallest values.
2. If a line had a slope of zero, what would it look like?

Answer: Horizontal Line

In algebra, we graph lines on the Cartesian plane. In the equation, Y=MX+B, the M stands for the slope or the steepness of our line. When the slope (M) is equal to zero, the graph is simply Y = B. This results in a horizontal line.
3. Which of these would be a categorical variable in statistics?

Answer: Vehicle type

In data collection for statistics, you can classify things as numerical or categorical. Numerical data are numbers in which you can do meaningful math calculations such as mean, range, and standard deviation. Categorical data is as it sounds. It puts items into specific groups such as type of vehicle. Categorical data can be represented with a pie chart or bar graph.
4. If a number is significantly larger or smaller than a data set, we might be able to call it an outlier.

Answer: True

In statistics, an outlier is a value that is significantly higher or lower than the other numbers in the data test. While there are many outlier tests one common test is seeing whether the value is more than two standard deviations above or below the mean (average).

The normal distribution curve estimates probability and values beyond 2 standard deviations only occur 2.5% of the time individually above or below that cut off point.
5. What name is given to an angle that is less than ninety degrees?

Answer: Acute

One of the first things learned about in geometry is the different types of angle. Acute angles are the smaller angles that are less than 90 degrees. An angle measuring 90 degrees is called a right angle. An angle greater than 90 degrees is called obtuse. Complementary angles are two angles that together add up to ninety degrees.
6. A triangle has 180 degrees, how many total degrees is a hexagon?

Answer: 720

Geometry includes the different types of two dimensional shapes like quadrilaterals, triangles, decagons, and regular hexagon. A hexagon is a six sided polygon where the angles add up to 720 degrees. The formula to figure out the total angle measurement is to multiply 180 times two less than the number of sides. So in this case, 180 times (6 minus 2) = 720.
7. Which three dimensional solid shape is made up of triangles for the sides and a base?

Answer: Pyramid

You learn about pyramids in geometry class. The three dimensional object has triangular faces that connect to the base and meet at a point called the apex. While many may picture the pyramids of Egypt, the mathematical shape could be in a variety of shapes based on the polygon base. For example, you have square pyramids, triangular, or even pentagonal pyramids.
8. Which type of triangle has no sides or angles of equal measurement?

Answer: Scalene

Triangles come in different sizes and they are classified by the angles formed in making the closed polygon. If all three angles of the triangle are equal, it's an equilateral triangle. A scalene triangle is one where none of the three angles are congruent. An isosceles triangle has exactly one pair of sides and one pair of angles equal to each other.
9. What is the graph of a quadratic function called?

Answer: Parabola

A quadratic equation in algebra has two as its highest exponent. The quadratic equation is y=Ax^2+Bx+C. Assuming A is not equal to zero, the graph will create a parabola. This is a curve that looks like the letter "U" or an upside down "U". The value of A in the equation lets you identify the graph's shape. Positive values of A will create the "U" shape and the reverse is true for negative values for A.
10. In which math class would you learn about L'Hôpital's rule?

Answer: Calculus

Hopefully you recognized that this French sounding rule sounds like it fits the most mathematical class in the quiz. You learn about L'Hopital's Rule in calculus and it is sometimes called Bernoulli's Law. When you calculate a limit of a function, you may up with a fraction of 0 divided 0 which is impossible to calculate.

The law lets you calculate the limit by taking the derivative (the slope at a moment) of both the numerator and the denominator separately. Then you are now able to plug in values to each and find the limit of a quotient.
