Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which country is St. Moritz?

Answer: Switzerland

St. Moritz is in the Engadine Valley, just a short distance north of the highest summit in the country, the Piz Bernina. This mountain is just over 4000 metres high.
2. The 1928 Winter Olympiad was plagued with unseasonable weather which led to the cancellation of which event?

Answer: 10,000m speed skating

The temperature actually reached 25 degrees Celcius, and forced the organisers to cancel the 10,000m speed skating event when the ice melted.
In contrast, the Opening Ceremony was held during a raging blizzard and almost total 'white-out' conditions.
3. The ladies figure skating gold medal was won by Sonja Henie at the 1928 Winter Olympics, and for the next 74 years she held an Olympic record. Which record was this?

Answer: Youngest gold medal winner

Sonja was just 15 years old when she took Gold in 1928, and was the youngest gold medal winner. She had won her first Norwegian Championship medal t aged just nine, and first entered the Olympics in 1924 when she was only 11 years old.
She later had a very successful Hollywood career in both films and the "Hollywood Ice Revue" which was produced especially as a showcase for her.
4. Two events at the St. Moritz Winter Olympiad in 1928 were demonstration sports. One of these was 'Skijoring'. What exactly is skijoring?

Answer: Being pulled along on skis by a dog

The term skijoring derives from the Norwegian words for 'ski' and 'driving'. Although it is most usual for a dog to pull the skier, horses and even motor vehicles such as skidoos can be used. Because the skier also helps to propel themself, rather than just being 'dead weight', even quite small dogs can participate.
In 1928, all three Olympic medals were won by Swiss athletes.
5. A sport which was a demonstration event at the 1928 St. Moritz Winter Olympiad was Military Patrol. This event comprised three disciplines. Which of these was not one of the three?

Answer: Tobogganing

The gold medal was won by the Norwegian team, silver by Finland, and the bronze went to Switzerland. Each team was made up of a comissioned officer, a non-commissioned officer, and two privates. The Norwegian officer, Ole Reistad, was also the flag bearer for the Norwegian team during the Opening Ceremony of the Games.
6. The only female medal winner from the USA at the 1928 Winter Olympiad in St. Moritz was called Beatrix Loughran. In which event did she win which medal?

Answer: Bronze in the figure skating

There were only 26 female competitors at the Games in 1928, compared to 438 men. Beatrix Loughran also won silver medals in the figure skating at Chamonix in 1924 and Lake Placid in 1932, which made her the only American woman (indeed the only American athlete) to win three individual Olympic skating medals during the 20th Century.

She also won a silver medal in the pairs skating in 1932, when she was partnered with Sherwin Badger.
7. What was the special 'claim to fame' of the 1928 St. Moritz Winter Olympiad?

Answer: First true Winter Games not held in conjunction with a Summer Games

Prior to 1924, the Nordic Games were the big winter sports meeting, almost always held in Sweden. In 1924, the games were held in conjunction with the Summer Olympics, and it was only later that they were renamed the first Winter Olympics. St. Moritz in 1928 was the first true 'stand alone' Winter Games, and were held from the 11th to the 19th of February.
8. The 1928 Winter Olympiad in St. Moritz was officially opened by a man named Edmund Schulthess. Who was this man?

Answer: President of Switzerland

Edmund Schulthess was President of Switzerland four times, in 1917, 1921, 1928, and 1933. He was also the President of the committee in charge of organising the Games. He officiated at the grand Opening Ceremony of the St. Moritz Games during a severe blizzard which almost caused the ceremony to be cancelled.
9. Remembered as one of the greatest speed skaters of all-time, which Norwegian took both a gold and a bronze medal during the 1928 St. Moritz Winter Olympiad?

Answer: Ivar Ballangrud

Ivar Ballangrud set five world records during his career. At St. Moritz, he took gold in the 5000m and bronze in the 1500m events. He also won three gold medals at the 1936 Games in Bavaria.
