Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team won the 2009 NCAA Championship Team Finals?

Answer: Georgia

Georgia won the 2009 Championships with a score of 197.825. This was Georgia's fifth National Championship in a row, and was aided by an all-around score of 39.9 by Courtney Kupets. Alabama came in second place with a score of 197.575, Utah was third with 197.425, and Florida was fourth with a score of 196.725.
2. Which gymnast won the all-around competition at the National Championships?

Answer: Courtney Kupets

Courtney Kupets from the University of Georgia won the all-around with a score of 39.8. Kristina Baskett from the University of Utah came in second with 39.6, and Vanessa Zamarripa of UCLA came in third with 39.575. This win marked Kupets' third all-around victory at NCAA Championships. Kupets did not compete in 2008 due to a leg injury, so she won the all-around title all three years she competed for it.
3. Which gymnast won the individual event title on vault?

Answer: Ashleigh Clare-Kearney

Ashleigh Clare-Kearney from LSU scored a 9.9 to win the vault title. Her teammate, Susan Jackson, came in second with a score of 9.8938. Susan Jackson won the vault title in 2008. Kristina Baskett and Courtney Kupets tied for third in the vault finals, each receiving scores of 9.8563.
4. The University of Nebraska hosted the 2009 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships. Were they one of the 12 schools that competed?

Answer: No

Nebraska just missed qualifying for the 2009 Championships. They placed third in regional competition behind Georgia and Penn State, and only the top two schools in each regional competition advanced. Nebraska did not compete in the 2008 National Championships, but did in 2007, when they placed sixth.
5. Which team came in 12th place at the NCAA Championships?

Answer: Illinois

Illinois made its first appearance in the NCAA Championships in 2009, and came in twelfth place with a score of 195.05. Stanford was eighth with a score of 196.225, Oklahoma was 10th with 195.825, and Oregon State came in 11th with a score of 195.35. Stanford and Oregon State both competed in the NCAA Championships in 2008, coming in third and tenth place, respectively.
6. Five of the six teams that competed in the Super Six in 2009 also competed in the Super Six in 2008. Which team did not?

Answer: Arkansas

LSU came in fifth place in 2008 and fell to sixth in 2009. Alabama rose from sixth place in 2008 to second in 2009. Florida came in fourth place both years. Arkansas competed in the 2008 National Championships, but came in ninth place. 2009 marked the first Super Six appearance for Arkansas, and they ended up in fifth place.
7. In the evening session of the preliminary round of the NCAA Championships, Utah and UCLA tied for third place. How was it decided that Utah was the team to qualify for the Super Six?

Answer: The lowest scores received on each event, which were previously dropped, were included and Utah edged UCLA.

Utah and UCLA both scored a 196.625 in the qualifying round of competition. UCLA's dropped scores were 9.7, 9.275, 9.2, and 9.775. Utah's dropped scores were 9.825, 9.8, 9.125, and 9.275. Since the total of Utah's dropped scores was 38.025 and UCLA's was 37.95, Utah advanced to the Super Six and UCLA had to settle for a seventh place finish in 2009.
8. All the following teams competed in the 2008 Championships. Which did not also compete in the 2009 Championships?

Answer: Michigan

Michigan tied for eighth place with Oklahoma in the 2008 Championships, but failed to qualify in 2009. Michigan had previously qualified for every National Championship from 1992 to 2008. UCLA got seventh place in both the 2008 and 2009 Championships, barely missing the Super Six both times.
9. How many teams scored above a 197 in the 2009 Championships?

Answer: 3

Georgia, Alabama, and Utah all scored above a 197. Florida's score was 0.275 short of 197. Only Georgia and Utah had scores above 197 in the 2008 Championships.
10. How many teams in the Super Six were from the SEC?

Answer: 5

The only team competing in the Super Six that wasn't from the SEC was Utah. Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, and LSU all competed in the SEC. In 2008, four teams from the SEC competed in the Super Six, and only two did in 2007.
