Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did the VFL club South Melbourne relocate to in 1982?

Answer: Sydney

The South Melbourne Swans were members of the Victorian Football League from its foundation in 1897 until 1981. They relocated to Sydney in 1982, and the league changed its name to the Australian Football League in 1990. The Swans won three Grand Finals when they were based in Melbourne, and added another two in Sydney, in 2005 and 2012.
2. Who captained the Australia national cricket team in a record 93 test matches between 1984 and 1994?

Answer: Allan Border

Allan Border made his test debut for Australia in 1978, and would go on to play in 156 tests, captaining his country in 93 of them. Primarily a batsman, although not adverse to a bit of bowling on occasion, Border also played in 273 One Day Internationals, captaining his country to victory in the 1987 World Cup.
3. The Wallabies, Australia's national Rugby Union team, won the World Cup in both 1991 and 1999. Which member of their 1991 squad would go on to captain his country to victory in 1999?

Answer: John Eales

John Eales, from Brisbane, was a lock who payed in the Australia team who defeated England at Twickenham in the 1991 Rugby World Cup Final. Eight years later, he was the captain of the Wallabies when they beat France in the final in Cardiff. Eales would go on to represent Australia 96 times, scoring 173 points. All the other players listed were part of the winning squads of both 1991 and 1999.
4. Which Australian tennis player has the distinction of winning a Calendar Year Grand Slam as both an amateur and a professional?

Answer: Rod Laver

Rod Laver, from Rockhampton, Queensland, won all four grand slam tournaments (French Open, Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open) in 1962. He turned professional at the end of that year, which meant he could no longer enter those tournaments, which still had a strictly amateur-only status. When tennis finally became "open" in 1968, he won Wimbledon that same year, and then did the grand slam again in 1969.

Note: The French, Australian and US tournaments were officially called "Championships" rather than "Opens" prior to 1968, but I have used the latter throughout for the sake of continuity.
5. The "Diamonds" in the nickname of Australia's national women's team in which sport?

Answer: Netball

Australia's national netball squad made their debut in 1938, defeating arch-rival New Zealand. They have been the most successful nation of all-time in the sport, winning 12 world titles between 1963 and 2003 and Commonwealth Games gold four times between 1998 and 2022. The "Diamonds" nickname was introduced in 2008.
The "Matildas" are the women's soccer squad, the "Jillaroos" play rugby league and the "Opals" play basketball.
6. The A-League is a professional soccer league which began play in 2005. The Central Coast Mariners, who were one of the original members, are a club based in which city?

Answer: Gosford

Central Coast Mariners FC joined the A-League in its inaugural season in 2005. They play home games at Grahame Park (Central Coast Stadium) in Gosford, a city located between Sydney and Newcastle. The Mariners have enjoyed considerable success on the field of play, winning three A-League championships between 2013 and 2024.
7. Three of these Australian golfers have won the (British) Open Championship. Which one retired without ever getting his hands on the famous Claret Jug?

Answer: Jack Newton

Kel Nagle, from Sydney, won the "centenary open" at St Andrews in 1960; Greg Norman, from Mount Isa, Queensland, was twice champion, at Turnberry in 1986 and Sandwich in 1993; and Ian Baker-Finch, from Nambour, Queensland, won at Royal Birkdale in 1991. Jack Newton came very close in 1975, losing in a play-off to Tom Watson at Carnoustie.
8. Which team dominated the New South Wales Rugby League, forerunner of the National Rugby League, in the 1950s and 60s, winning 11 straight titles between 1956 and 1966?

Answer: St. George Dragons

St. George Dragons entered the NSWRL in 1921 and won 15 Premierships between 1941 and 1979, including an amazing eleven straight from 1956 to 1966. Since the league evolved into the NRL in 1995, the Dragons found success harder to come by and, in 1998, they merged with the Illawarra Steelers to become the St. George Illawarra Dragons, dividing their home games between the Jubilee Oval in Sydney and WIN Stadium in Wollongong.
9. Sydney hosted the 2000 Summer Olympics, and the host nation won a bunch of gold medals. Which one of these athletes won on the track rather than in the swimming pool?

Answer: Cathy Freeman

Cathy Freeman lit the olympic flame at the start of the 2000 games, and went on to win the women's 400m race. The other three options were all swimmers - Grant Hackett won the 1500m and one relay gold; Ian Thorpe won the 400m freestyle and two relays; and Susie O'Neill won the women's 200m freestyle.
10. Australia has played host to the Commonwealth Games many times. Which one of these cities did NOT host the games during the 20th century?

Answer: Adelaide

The Commonwealth Games first came to Australia in 1938, when Sydney played host. Perth was host city in 1962, with Brisbane following in 1982. The games came back to Australia in the early 21st century, with Melbourne hosting the 2006 edition, and Gold Coast playing host in 2018.
