Peter Brock is one of the most famous names in the history of Australian motor racing. He won both the Bathurst 1000 and Sandown 590 nine times, and was Australian Touring Car champion in 1974, 1978 and 1980.
2. The State of Origin is an annual series of matches in which sport?

Answer: Rugby League

The State of Origin series ia a rugby league competition between teams representing New South Wales and Queensland. Players are selected to represent the state where they played their first senior game at either school or local club level. First played in 1982, the series is a best-of-three matches event.

In the early 21st century, one of the three matches has been played on "neutral" territory in Adelaide, Melbourne or Perth.
3. In 2025, which state won cricket's Sheffield Shield, ending a near 30-year title drought?

Answer: South Australia

The Sheffield Shield is the domestic "first class" tournament for state sides in Australia. First contested in 1892-93, it was originally a three team competition involving New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria. Queensland joined in 1926, Western Australia in 1947 and Tasmania in 1977.

After winning the 1995-96 edition, South Australia endured a miserable run in the competition over the next three decades, regularly finishing bottom of the standings. That all changed in season 2024-25 when they finished top of the group stage before defeating Queensland in the final.
4. Swimmer Dawn Fraser is one of Australia's most-decorated Olympians, winning gold at three successive games 1956-1960-1964. At which stroke did she excel?

Answer: Freestyle

Dawn Fraser, from Sydney, dominated the 100 metre freestyle event in women's swimming in the late 1950's/early 1960's. She won gold at this distance at Melbourne in 1956, Rome in 1960 and Tokyo in 1964. She added a freestyle relay gold in 1956, and a number of silvers at 400 metre freestyle, medley relay and freestyle relay during her career.

At the Commonwealth games, she won six gold medals between 1858 and 1962.
5. Which Australian tennis player won the Wimbledon women's singles title twice, in 1971 and 1980?

Answer: Evonne Goolagong Cawley

Evonne Goolagong was born in Griffith, NSW, in 1951. In 1971, she defeated fellow Aussie Margaret Court in the final of Wimbledon. Nine years later, under her married name of Evonne Cawley, she beat Chris Evert to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish for a second time. Evonne also won four Australian Opens and one French Open, but never claimed the US Open, losing in the final on four successive occasions between 1973 and 1976.
6. In 1992, which team became the first from outside the state of Victoria to win the Grand Final of the Australian Football League (AFL)?

The Australian Football League is the premier competition in the sport of Australian Rules Football (Aussie Rules). Prior to 1990 the competion was known as the Victorian Football League and was dominated by teams from in or around Melbourne. In 1992, the West Coast Eagles, from Perth, took the Grand Final trophy out of Victoria for the first time, defeating the Geelong Cats 113-85 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Australia's women's basketball squad are nicknamed the Opals. Regularly finishing among the medals at the summer Olympics, the Opals won the FIBA World Cup, defeating Russia in the final. The men's soccer squad are nicknamed the Socceroos, the Rugby League team are known as the Kangaroos and the women's hockey team are nicknamed the Hockeyroos.

In 1986 at Turnberry, he was a comfortable five-stroke winner, whilst, at Sandwich in 1993, he saw off Nick Faldo by two shots.
10. In 2011, who became the first Australian cyclist to win the Tour de France?

Answer: Cadel Evans

Cadel Evans, from Katherine, Northern Territory, was a professional cyclist who achieved much success in the early 21st century. After winning the points classification at the 2010 Giro d'Italia, he became the first Australian to win the general classification at the Tour de France the following year.

He had previously won Commonwealth Games gold in the road time trial in 2002 and World Championship gold in the 2009 road race.
