Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first manager of the Angels?

Answer: Bill Rigney

Rigney was the Los Angeles Angels' first manager in 1961 behind the hitting of Leon Wagner and the pitching of Ken McBride. They finished their first season with a record of 70-91.
2. Who was the first team to win five games in a World Series?

Answer: Boston Pilgrims

In 1903 when baseball had a best-of-nine series, the Pilgrims beat the Pirates 5 games to 3. There was no World Series in 1904. The following Series in 1905 was a best-of-seven series.
3. How many times did Yogi Berra manage his team to a first place season finish?

Answer: 2

Berra took both New York clubs to first place. In 1964 he led the Yankees to the American League crown, then in 1973 he led the Mets to the National League crown.
4. How many teams did the great Bobby Bonilla play for from 1986 to 2001, a career spanning 16 years?

Answer: 8

Bobby was shuttled around the league for his services. He started his career with the White Sox in 1986 but went to the Pirates before the season was over. He spent 6 more seasons with Pittsburgh, 4 with the Mets, then the Orioles, Marlins, Dodgers, Braves, and then the Cardinals in 2001.
5. The New York Mets won their first ever postseason game in 1969. Who did they beat?

Answer: Altanta Braves

1969 was the first season in which the National League Champion Series was played. In the first ever NLCS, the Mets faced the Atlanta Braves. Normally, winning a postseason game would be required to reach the NLCS, but the Mets had the best record in the NL that year and earned a bye to the NLCS. Having the best record certainly showed, and the Mets ousted the Braves 3-0 in a best of five series.
6. In May 2015, Jason Kipnis put together arguably the single greatest month of baseball Cleveland sports had ever seen. In 29 games played, how many runs scored did Kipnis achieve?

Answer: 30

30 runs scored in 29 games means Kipnis was getting on base at a pretty unfathomable rate, as the team wasn't even hitting all that great in general. He managed to get on base by way of the bat 51 times in this singular month, recording 17 RBI and knocking four out of the park in the process.
7. Joe Mauer ended up being a Minnesota Twins eternal, never wearing another team's uniform throughout his fourteen year career (2004-2018). The Twins were just as interested in him right from the start. Which pick was used in the 2001 MLB draft to select Mauer?

Answer: 1st

The MLB draft is a lot bigger with a lot more selections made than any other sport. As such, being the #1 pick should statistically be a greater achievement. Although these players don't always pan out, it's safe to say Mauer did. He became easily the greatest hitting catcher to ever play the game by the time he retired, becoming the only catcher in all of MLB history to win three batting titles.

What's really cool about Mauer playing for the Twins specifically, is that he went to high school in Minnesota and was drafted to the Twins straight from Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, Minnesota.
8. Playing for the Tampa Bay Rays, Randy Arozarena was blasting off in 2020 like nobody's business. So much so that he set an MLB record for homers from one player in a single postseason. How many homers did he hit in the 2020 playoffs?

Answer: 10

In particular, Arozarena saved a whopping seven of his homers for the ALCS, being crowned ALCS MVP as the Rays advanced to the World Series that year. The power fell off hard during the World Series, and the Rays were swiftly defeated by the Dodgers. But, up to the point where cross league play reached the postseason, Arozarena was unbeatable at the plate.
9. The electric reliever Craig Kimbrel spent time all over the league, playing for a total of twelve teams across a sixteen year career. What team did he spend the most time with?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

Kimbrel got to essentially go on a tour around the country, playing for different teams in a myriad of places. His career started off with the Atlanta Braves, which proved to be the only real stability his career ever saw. He played for them from 2010-14, then came back go Atlanta eleven years later for a brief spell in 2025. That would mean nearly one third of his career was spent as a Brave, which just edges out his three years as a Boston Red Sox (2016-18) as the next lengthiest stay he would have.
10. Prince Fielder and Cecil Fielder embodied the expression "like father, like son" almost a little too closely. Which stat of the following did these two men hold exactly identical figures in?

Answer: Home Runs hit

Both of the Fielders hit exactly 319 home runs each as MLB players. In the process, they became the first father/son duo to individually hit 50 or more homers in a season, and they also each passed the 1,000 RBI mark as well. They even each participate in a McDonald's commercial together, featuring Prince striking out his father advertising a triple cheeseburger.
