Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1993 was Nolan Ryan's final season, and he announced his retirement prior to the season. Near the end of his career on August 4, Ryan hit a Chicago White Sox player with a pitch. The batter charged the mound only to be met by a headlock from Ryan, then repeated punches to the head. Who was this embarrassed player?

Answer: Robin Ventura

Ventura felt six consecutive punches from Ryan before catcher Pudge Rodriguez could pull Robin away from Ryan. There was a 20-year difference between Ryan and Ventura, but age prevailed in this one. Ryan and the Rangers went on to win the game 5-2.
2. In August 1965 with Dodger Sandy Koufax on the mound and catcher John Roseboro behind the plate, which opposing pitcher who was the batter, clubbed Roseboro to a bloody mess?

Answer: Juan Marichal

It was the long-winded rivalry between the Dodgers and Giants. Earlier in the game, Marichal had knocked down Dodgers Maury Wills and Ron Fairly with high and inside pitches. When Marichal came to bat, Koufax, not the type to retaliate, wouldn't do anything.

Instead, Roseboro was giving Juan plenty of lip, and came close to Juan's head when he returned pitches to Koufax. With only a bat in his hand, Marichal went to work on Roseboro. Both benches cleared, and for 14 minutes it looked like a preliminary to a Geraldo Rivera talk show. Marichal was not only suspended for nine games, but was restricted from traveling with the team to Los Angeles for the final homestand of the season against the Dodgers. Roseboro later sued Marichal. Ironically, Marichal retired as a Dodger in 1975.
3. On May 15, 1912, this Detroit Tiger had enough of a fan heckling him through five innings. He jumped into the stands and beat the daylights out of the fan. Who was this player?

Answer: Ty Cobb

The Georgia Peach was the punch-er, and Claude Lueker was the punch-ee. Lueker was hurt pretty bad in what Major League Baseball called an assault. The league suspended Cobb, but lifted the suspension after the entire Detroit Tiger team refused to play until he was reinstated.

After one game of the Tiger office substituting any and everyone off the street to play a game, the Commissioner reinstated Cobb.
4. This infielder played in the Major Leagues for 15 seasons and retired in 2005. He continued to play ball in the Dominican League. In January 2010, he punched out an umpire during an argument. Who is this player?

Answer: Jose Offerman

Offerman was the manager of the Licey Tigers, and when Ron Paulino was ejected by the home plate umpire for arguing balls and strikes, Offerman came out of the dugout to argue, but ended up arguing with first base umpire Dan Rayburn, then punching him out to the ground. Offerman has had previous tantrum issues, including clubbing a Minor League pitcher in 2007 after the pitcher hit him with a pitch.
5. As a rookie manager in 1969, who beat up his own pitcher in a bar parking lot, sending him to the hospital?

Answer: Billy Martin

With conflicting reports, the fight occurred either in the bar between Twins manager Martin and pitcher Dave Boswell, or Martin came to the aid of Bob Allison in the parking lot who was being beat up by Boswell. Whichever the soap opera went, Boswell ended up with 20 stitches versus Martin's seven on his hand.

The fans weren't receptive to this at all, and with only one month to go in the season, Martin was canned by the upper brass.
6. In a bizarre twist, this player went to the outfield in the 1934 World Series to begin the bottom of the sixth inning in game seven. Without a pitch being thrown, without the player saying anything or motioning to anyone, he was then ejected. Actually, this was a result of a fight in the previous inning. Who was this ejected player?

Answer: Joe Medwick

Medwick of the Cardinals tripled in the top of the sixth. When sliding into third base, he came in high with his cleats. Tiger third baseman Marv Owen took offense, then feet and fists began to fly. When it was over, Medwick offered to shake hands but Owen refused. Neither player was ejected at that time, but when Medwick took the field in the bottom of the inning, he was pelted with everything that fans could get their hands on. Home plate umpire Bill Klem ejected Medwick for his own protection, and he was escorted under security from the field.
7. In the 1930s, a bench and stands clearing brawl began during a Yankee-Senator game. It started because a Yankee player slid into second base and cut the foot of second baseman Buddy Myer. Who was the player with the cleats that started one of the biggest brawls in baseball?

Answer: Ben Chapman

The others never played for the Yankees. Chapman was a rookie with the Yankees in 1930. When Chapman and Myer starting fighting, the benches cleared, but the fight was broke up before any damage was done. Both players were ejected, but the only path off the field was the walkway to both locker rooms. With words being exchanged, the fight was on again, but this time both benches participated in the brawl in the hallway. An estimated 300 fans then ran on to the field, grabbing any bat they could, then started beating players with those bats.

The players retaliated by batting some fans around too. Order was restored by police, private detectives, and anyone with a badge after 20 minutes. Strangely enough, the game continued and the Yankees won 16-0.
8. Which two Dodger teammates went at it prior to a game at Shea Stadium in 1978?

Answer: Don Sutton and Steve Garvey

Not well liked by teammates, Garvey was very out-going, and the other players just kept to themselves. But, when Sutton did an interview with the Washington Post, Garvey took offense to it. The two argued, Sutton said something about Steve's wife Cyndy, then it was on.
9. In 1984, two teams brawled in four different innings of a game in Atlanta. The Braves were one team. Who was the other?

Answer: San Diego Padres

It all started on the first pitch of the game when the Braves' Pascual Perez hit second baseman Alan Wiggins. When Perez came to bat in the second inning, Padre pitcher Ed Whitson threw behind Perez's head in retaliation, then both benches cleared. The second brawl was in the fifth inning, the third in the eighth, and the final in the ninth.

There were 14 players players ejected from the game. Both managers Joe Torre and Dick Williams, and five fans who got involved were also ejected.
10. Which Dodgers pitcher karate-kicked Tim Belcher, a former Dodger pitcher and 1999 Angel?

Answer: Chan Ho Park

In an interleague game in June, it was 'you hit one of mine so I'll hit two of yours', and this was what happened in this game with the Dodgers and Angels. What started the brawl was when Park, as a batter, bunted up the first baseline. When Belcher fielded it, he tagged out Park in the chest. Park didn't like it, took a step back, then karate-kicked Belcher. Belcher threw Park to the ground and began to pummel him. Both benches cleared.
