Blackburn Rovers had a number of temporary home grounds in their early days before moving into Ewood Park in 1890. In 1929, a record crowd of 61,783 attended an F.A. Cup tie against Bolton Wanderers. Modern safety regulations meant that the capacity of the stadium was an all-seated 31,367 when the ground's transformation was completed in Auguust 1994.

After wearing white shirts for the first three years of their existence, Blackburn Rovers adopted blue and white halved shirts in 1878, and they have worn them ever since. Blackburn Rovers reached their first F.A. Cup final in 1882, losing 0-1 to Old Etonians. In 1884, they won the trophy for the first time with a 2-1 victory over Queens Park (Scottish clubs were allowed to enter the competition in those days).
The following season they retained the trophy by defeating Queens Park again, 2-0. In 1886, they made it a hat-trick of triumphs, beating West Bromwich Albion 2-0 in a replay after the first match ended 0-0.

The former mill towns of Blackburn and Burnley are only around 10 miles (16 km) apart, and the two local football teams contest one of the fiercest rivalries in English football, the "East Lancashire derby" or "Cotton Mills derby". Contested since 1884, in the 21st century this fixture has become a "bubble match" where visiting fans travel to and from their opponents ground in official coaches escorted by the police.

Alan Shearer was signed from Southampton in 1992, with Chris Sutton arriving from Norwich in 1994. In the 1994-95 season, they netted 49 league goals between them as Blackburn won their first top flight title since 1914. In 1996, Shearer moved on to his boyhood idols Newcastle United, whilst Sutton was sold to Chelsea in 1999.

Former Celtic and Liverpool idol Kenny Dalglish took over the reigns at Blackburn in 1991 when they were in the second tier, and led them to promotion in his first season. They quickly established themselves as one of the main challengers to Alex Ferguson's Manchester United, and it all came good in May, 1995.

Despite losing their last game, ironically at the home of Dalglish's former club Liverpool, Manchester United's failure to beat West Ham United on the same day meant that Rovers were champions.

Morten Gamst Pedersen was a Norwegian midfielder who joined Blackburn from Tromso in 2004. He made 288 league appearances for Rovers and scored 35 goals before moving to Turkish club Karabukspor in 2013. He was capped 83 times for his country, with 69 of those coming during his spell with Blackburn.

Graeme Souness was in the manager's seat at Blackburn during the 2001-02 season. Their League Cup campaign saw them defeat Oldham Athletic, Middlesbrough, Manchester City, Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday to set up a final meeting with Tottenham Hotspur at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Matt Jansen gave Rovers the lead, with Christian Ziege equalizing for Spurs. Andy Cole grabbed the winner in the 69th minute to send the trophy back to Blackburn for the very first time.
