1. In the opening knockout match of the Round of 16, Canada played Morocco in Houston, Texas. How many goals were scored in this match?

Answer: 3

In the 5th minute Luc De Fougerolles headed the ball down to Jonathan David in the penalty area, but the ball wouldn't come down for him in time, and the Moroccan keeper Yassine Bounou blocked his attempted cross. In the 10th minute, Tani Oluwaseyiwas played in by Ali Ahmed, but his turn and shot was blocked by Bounou. In the 18th minute Stephen Astaquio's corner was met by Alistair Johnston free in the area, but his header was blocked. In the 28th minute Morocco gathered a loose pass in the midfield and passed the ball to Soufiane Rahimi, whose run and deflected shot was saved by the Canadian keeper Maxime Crepeau. Half time, score was 0-0.

In the 49th minute De Fougerolles' spin and volley for Canada went high over the bar. In the 50th minute a free kick near the right hand touchline was played square by Achraf Hakimi and found Azzedine Ounahi in space running into the 'D'. His first time strike was low and hard and found the bottom corner of the Canadian net. 1-0 to Morocco. In the 78th minute David's tame free kick went over the bar. In the 79th minute Tajon Buchanan's shot from distance forced the Bounou into a full length save. In the 82nd minute a Moroccan counter attack saw them with an extra player situation and a pass to Ounahi saw him blast is shot into the corner of the net. 2-0 to Morocco. In the 85th minute a similar counter attack ended up with Rahimi's header hitting the underside of the bar and bouncing back down into play. In the 85th minute Buchanan's cutback into the box was cleared. In the 6th minute of stoppage time after a free lick and scramble in the area saw Jacob Shaffelburg's shot blocked and then Johnston's chip lifted over. In the last minute of stoppage time Morocco won the ball in midfield and surged up the pitch, the final pass from Brahim Diaz going to Rahimi who calmly slotted it under Crepeau for a goal. Full time, 3-0 to Morocco.

So, Morocco won the match 1-0. The Atlas Lions progressed and the Canucks went north, back over the border. With this victory Morocco became the first African country to reach the last eight more than once (their first was at Qatar 2022). In the Quarter Finals, Morocco played France in Boston, Massachusetts.
2. Paraguay played France in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the second knockout match of the Round of 16. How many penalties were awarded in this match?

Answer: 1

In the 12th minute a French cross to Bradley Barcola near the six yard box was just too high. In the 15th minute a cross from Lucas Digne went straight to the Paraguayan keeper Orlando Gill. In the 22nd minute Jules Kounde's deflected shot from outside the area flashed wide of the left hand post. In the 23rd minute a cross from Ousmane Dembele was headed out for a corner by Gustavo Velazquez. In the 28th minute Junior Alonso's long range effort was partly blocked, the ball fell to Diego Gomez whose effort was sliced horribly wide. In the 33rd minute Adrien Rabiot's shot from outside the area flew over the bar. In the 36th minute a free kick from Michael Olise was floated into the six yard box was knocked out of play by Andres Cubas. From the resultant corner Kounde's shot was saved by Gill. In the 42nd minute Digne's low ball into the box was gather by Gill. Half time, score was 0-0, after France had had more than the lion's share of possession.

In the 49th minute Rabiot's shot from outside the area flew over the bar. In the 50th minute Miguel Almiron's run into to the French area saw his attempt blocked behind for a corner. In the 33rd minute Rabiot's shot from outside the area flew over the bar. In the 51st minute a huge disposal from the French keeper Mike Maignan released Kylian Mbappe - in his run toward the Paraguayan goal, he appeared to handle the ball. A defender intercepted his run, putting the ball behind for a goal kick. Here's where things got silly. In their annoyance that the referee had not spotted what may - or may not - have happened, two defenders got in the referee's face demanding who knows what exactly? If he didn't see it, he didn't see it. Comically, one of the defenders was making a 'pitchside monitor' signal with his hands. Meanwhile France, who know how to play the whistle like any schoolkid gets taught, took a quick corner and almost had the ball in the goal. Dembele's shot hit the side netting and Gill was injured when Dembele fell on him after being nudged by a defender.

In the 54th minute Kone's shot was tipped over by Gill. In the 60th minute it was Barcola's turn to smash the ball high over the bar. In the 64th minute France's Desire Doue appeared to be tripped in the penalty area but the referee waved play on. From the break upfield Julio Enciso sprinted half the length of the pitch and then succumbed to cramp in the heat. Meanwhile, VAR advised the referee to go to the pitchside monitor to look at a possible penalty for the tackle on Doue. Result: Penalty. In the 70th minute Mbappe stepped up and sent Gill the wrong way as he put it hard and low to the keeper's left. In the 89th minute Mbappe's shot was saved by Gill. In the 90th minute Mauricio's snapshot forced French keeper Maignan to dive full length to his right to save. In the 6th minute of stoppage time Gill pulled off a doble save from Mbappe. Full time, 1-0 to France.

So, France won the match 1-0. Le Bleus progressed and La Albirroja went back Asuncion and beyond. Mbappe's goal extended the record for World Cup knockout stage goals, putting him on eleven. He became the first player to score in the Round of 16 in three successive Finals tournaments. In the Quarter Finals, France played Morocco in Boston, Massachusetts.

In the 10th minute Matheus Cunha claimed that he had been brought down in the box by Kristoffer Ajer. The referee said no. VAR said better check. The pitchside monitor didn't lie; it was a stonewall penalty. In the 14th minute Bruno Guimaraes stutter stepped and had his telegraphed effort saved by Norway's keeper Orjan Nyland. In the 62nd minute, Rayan's shot from the edge of the area was saved by Nyland's legs. In the 66th minute Torbjorn Heggem's cross from the left was heading towards Haaland but Alisson's fingertips deflected it away from him. In the 75th minute Andreas Schjelderup's shot was turned away by Alisson. In the 79th minute Schjelderup's cross from the left was headed into the corner of the net by Haaland. 1-0 to Norway. In the 85th minute Ajer lofted a ball toward his own goal; Nyland have to dive full length to push it onto the post and away. In the 86th minute Casemiro's cross from the left flashed right across goal without a touch. In the 8th minute of stoppage time a penalty was awarded to Brazil after Leo Ostigard led with his arm against Casemiro in the area. Neymar Jr lined up to take it but the next 30 seconds was filled with him and Nyland trash talking each other. When they got back to the football, Neymar rolled the penalty to Nyland's left. Full time, 2-1 to Norway.

The greatest day in Norway's football history; this was the first time they progressed to the World Cup quarter finals. Erling Haaland had now scored seven goals in four World Cup finals matches. In the Quarter Finals, Norway played England.
4. In the fourth knockout match of the Round of 16, Mexico played England in Mexico City, Mexico. Ho many penalty kicks were converted in the game?

Answer: 2

The game started with a fair bit of niggle from both sides, in the process, Declan Rice was booked within the first minute. In the 9th minute Bukayo Saka's cross for England was overhit. In the 14th minute Mark Guehi put a long pass down the middle for Saka to run onto, but his first touch was too difficult and the Mexican keeper Raul Rangel gathered. In the 15th minute a cross from Roberto Alvarado found the head of Raul Jimenez, whose firm diving header was creeping just into the near corner until being pushed away by a diving English keeper, Jordan Pickford. From the resulting corner the ball was headed clear by Jude Bellingham. From the next corner, Harry Kane headed clear. In the 20th minute Anthony Gordon's run down the left took him past two defenders but his cutback was blocked out for a corner by Erik Lira. In the 26th minute Gordon chased down a long ball, cut back inside and his shot was well held by Rangel. In the 32nd minute Luis Romo's long range effort for Mexico went over the bar. In the 35th minute Johan Vasquez's cross was overhit. In the 36th minute Vasquez's lofted through ball was just too far in front of Jimenez and Pickford gathered it. From Pickford's roll out, Rice took the ball up the right hand side, fed it to Bukayo Saka on the wing, who beat his man and sent in a pinpoint cross for the diving head of Bellingham to score. England lead 1-0.

Within two minutes England doubled their lead. Gilberto Mora was robbed in midfield by Elliot Anderson, the ball ended up with Gordon who in turn was tackled but the ball ran to Bellingham. He fed Harry Kane who provided a return ball to the six yard box for Bellingham to slide into the goal. 2-0 to England. In the 42nd minute a free kick into England's area was not cleared properly by Ezri Konsa, the ball fell to Julian Quinones, who slammed the ball into the roof of the net. 2-1 to England. In the 1st minute of stoppage time Lira's cross into the box was chested down by Quinones to Jimenez, whose first time shot went wide of Pickford's left hand post. In the 4th minute of stoppage time Alvarado's cross was met by other accurate header from Jimenez, this time Pickford dived full length to tip it away from the top corner. From the resultant corner, Jimenez's free header in the area went to Cesar Montes at the far post, but Bellingham was aware of the danger and got a toe to the ball for another corner. Half time, 2-1 to England.

In the 48th minute Quinones' long range shot was blocked. In the 49th minute Nico O'Reilly's run to the byline and cutback evaded Kane and could have been side footed in by Saka, had he only believed the ball might have reached him. From the throw in that followed, the ball bounced in the area, was partly cleared to O'Reilly whose volley hit the base of the right hand post via a touch from Bellingham and was cleared by Vasquez. In the 50th minute Gordon's cross was blocked. In the 54th minute Jarell Quansah was given a straight red card for an over the ball challenge on Gallardo. Missed at the time by the officials, the decision was made following a VAR recommendation and a visit by the referee to the pitchside monitor. In the 55th minute Alvarado's free kick was cleared by Kane who was fouled in the process. In the 57th minute Quinones' spin and turn saw his shot go well wide. In the 58th minute Pickford's long clearance was chested down by Kane into the path of Gordon, who got a touch to the ball just before Rangel brought him down in the area. The referee pointed to the spot. By the time the kick was taken the match was in the 60th minute. Kane stepped up and buried it in Rangel's bottom right corner. 3-1 to England. The English commentator proclaimed: "England can look ahead to Miami next Saturday" (referring to the quarter final). That was a bold call with one man down, thirty minutes left and a hostile crowd calling for your blood. How would it turn out?

In the 66th minute Jesus Gallardo's centre was cut out by John Stones. In the 66th minute VAR recommended that the referee visit the pitchside monitor to check if Kane's clearance attempt hadn't caught Brian Gutierrez's leg first. Unsurprisingly, the decision was penalty. In the 69th minute Jimenez dispatched the penalty in the same manner as Kane. 3-2 to England. In the next ten minutes a series of Mexican balls into the area were all cleared in various manners. In the 78th minute a Gallardo cross was headed behind by Djed Spence. From the resulting corner Pickford got a touch behind for another corner. From that corner Edson Alvarez could only get a glance on a free header in front of goal. In the 82nd minute a cross by Alvaro Fidalgo was volleyed over on the turn by Santiago Gimenez. In the 86th minute a Gallardo cross was powerfully punched away by Pickford. In the 89th minute Fidalgo's strong shot from outside the area was well held by Pickford.

In the 1st minute of stoppage time Jimenez's cross was gathered by Pickford. In the 2nd minute of stoppage time Gallardo's cross was blocked by Konsa. In the 3rd minute of stoppage time Bellingham attempted to complete his hat trick by chipping Rangel form the halfway line. The ball dropped just under the bar but Rangel was well positioned to save it. In the 4th minute of stoppage time Gallardo cut inside but his mishit shot was so wide it almost took out the corner flag. In the 5th minute of stoppage time a cross from Gallardo was too deep and ran out of play. In the 6th minute of stoppage time Jimenez's overhead attempt was blocked by Dan Burn. In the 6th minute of stoppage time Alvarez's long range attempt was blocked by Rice. In the 7th minute of stoppage time Gallardo's low cross was met first time by Jimenez on the turn but his shot went high. In the 12th minute of stoppage time Alvarado's cross to the back post was controlled by Jimenez but it fell to John Stones, who stabbed the ball out of play inches from the post. From the resulting corner, two more Mexican attempts were blocked. From the corner, Pickford punched the ball away and the referee blew the whistle. Full time, 3-2 to England.

So, England won the match 3-2. The Three Lions progressed and La Tri went, well, outside, and home. Bellingham's goal was the first that Mexico had conceded in five games at the 2026 tournament. It was also the first time Mexico had ever gone behind at the Azteca Stadium in any World Cup match. Bellingham became the youngest player to appear in ten World Cup Finals matches, beating the previous record holder Mario Kempes of Argentina by 328 days (set at 1978 Argentina). In the Quarter Finals, England played Norway.
