Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Within the Round of 16, eight teams were eliminated: Canada, Paraguay, Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, USA, Egypt and Colombia.

Canada, playing at the highest level they had achieved in a World Cup, against the Moroccan team, which finished fourth in 2022, kept the Africans scoreless in the first half. However, the Moroccans scored three times in the second half (50 ', 82 ', and 90+8') to defeat Canada 3-0.

Despite never defeating France in five previous matches between the two teams, Paraguay held France scoreless in the first half. In a match that "featured" 24 fouls (Paraguay, 13 - France, 11 - France had three yellow cards). It was a 70th-minute penalty that decided it. Mbappe stepped up, and he made no mistake. Final score: France 1 Paraguay 0.

While Norway had only ever appeared in four World Cups, they had beaten Brazil in a 1998 group stage victory. When they drew 1-1 in their most recent match in 2006, Norway became the only country that Brazil has played but never beaten. That statistic stayed intact after this match: it was still 0-0 after 79 minutes when Norway's superstar Haarland, found the back of the net. He scored again in the 90th minute. Brazil scored a consolation goal in the tenth minute of stoppage time, but the final score of 2-1 was a repeat of the score in the 1998 World Cup. Brazil had not been eliminated in the Round of 16 or earlier since 1990.

Mexico and England had played each other nine times previously, with England winning the last encounter 3-1 in a 2010 friendly. They also met in a World Cup match in 1966 (at which England ultimately won the Cup) when England won 2-0 in a Group stage match. Bellingham scored twice in 2 minutes for England in the first half, but Mexico were able to pull one back just before half-time. Momentum changed at the 54-minute mark when Quansah was sent off for Mexico. Kane scored from a 60th-minute penalty, and Jimenez countered with a penalty of their own in the 69th minute. Despite a frenetic final 21 minutes of regular and 11 minutes of stoppage time, Mexico tried everything to score an equaliser but to no avail. They were eliminated at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, a stadium where they had never lost a World Cup match previously.

Spain versus Portugal in a World Cup Match could be considered a local derby. They had met 41 times previously, with Spain winning 17, Portugal 6, and 18 drawn. This match was headed for a 0-0 draw when Merino scored for Spain in the first minute of stoppage time. The final score of 1-0 ended Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career.

The match between USA and Belgium was marred by an incident where there was political intervention to overturn the red-card suspension of key US striker Folarin Balogun, which resulted in the striker being allowed to play. The two teams had met seven times previously -- in a friendly before the World Cup, Belgium defeated the USA 5-2. In two previous World Cup meetings, the USA defeated Belgium 3-0 in a 1930 group stage match (the only time the USA has won), and in the 2014 tournament Round of 16, Belgium won 2-1. In this match, Belgium scored early in the ninth minute, but the USA equalised in the 31st minute. Belgium quickly replied two minutes later to lead 2-1 at the break. In the second half, Belgium added two more goals to eliminate the USA from the cup with their worst defeat in the World Cup, since their 5-1 loss to Czechoslovakia in the 1990 tournament.

Argentina and Egypt had only met on two previous occasions, with Argentina winning in 1928 and 2008. Argentina, despite being favourites, had a narrow 3-2 win against 67th-world-ranked Cape Verde to reach the Round of 16. In this Ro16 match, Egypt scored twice, in the 15th and 67th minutes, to lead 2-0 deep into the second half before Argentina rallied and scored in the 79th, 83rd, and two minutes into stoppage time, to win 3-2.

Colombia and Switzerland had met twice before, with the Colombians winning both, including a 2-0 win in the 1994 World Cup Group Stage. This Ro16 match ended in a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes of play. In the subsequent penalty shootout, both teams missed one shot, with the Swiss goalkeeper saving another, allowing Switzerland to advance to the quarter-finals on a 4-3 penalty count.

Eight teams remained: Six European clubs, one African and one South American. All three North American host nations were eliminated in the Round of 16. The four teams eliminated in the quarter-finals were Morocco, Belgium, Norway and Switzerland.

In the first quarter-final, Morocco was drawn against France. They last met in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, when France won 2-0. Previously, they had met a further five times, with France winning four matches. The first half was scoreless, with Mbappe, unusually, missing a penalty. However, he characteristically got on the scoresheet with his eighth goal of the tournament. France potted another nine minutes later to make the final score a repeat of their 2022 clash.

Spain and Belgium had met 21 times previously, with the record standing at Spain's 13 wins to Belgium's 5, alongside 4 draws. They had met twice in World Cup ties, with Belgium winning on penalties in a 1-1 drawn quarter-final in 1986 and Spain winning 2-1 in a 1990 group stage match. Spain scored in the 30th minute, but Belgium equalised before half-time. The second half was a tense struggle, with Spain scoring a winner with two minutes to spare in regulation time.

England and Norway had met twelve times since their first encounter in 1937, with England winning seven times, Norway two, and three draws. In this match, Norway scored first in the 36th minute through Schjelderup, but Bellingham equalised in stoppage time of the first half. No goals were scored in the second half, so extra time was needed. Bellingham scored his second (and sixth for the series to date, matching his teammate Harry Kane) early, in the first three minutes of extra time. Egland then hung on to reach the semifinals. For Norway, it was the highest position they had achieved in World Cup football

Switzerland have never beaten Argentina in the seven prior matches to this one. The best they could manage was two draws. They had met twice before in World Cup matches: Argentina won 2-0 in the group stage of the 1966 competition, and in the Round of 16 in the 2014 Cup, Argentina won again 1-0. In this match, it looked like Argentina did not have to come from behind when MacAllister scored in the tenth minute. However, after no goals were scored in the next 55 minutes, it was the Swiss that scored next sending the match into extra time. For the third match in a row, Argentina rallied at the end of the match and scored two goals in extra time, for a 3-1 win. Switzerland had been eliminated and Argentina were through to the semifinals.
