Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the eleventh knockout match of the Round of 32, Spain played Austria in Los Angeles, California. The last time the Austrians played in a knockout game at the World Cup was in Switzerland 1954. How many goals were scored in this match?

Answer: 3

In the 1st minute Spain broke down the left and Lamine Yamal's shot from the edge of the area was well held by keeper Alexander Schlager. In the 7th minute a cross into the area from Austria's Marcel Sabitzer just eluded the head of Michael Gregoritsch. In the 19th minute Pedro Porro's cross was claimed by Schlager. In the 28th minute a pass into the six yard box was stabbed behind by Austria's Stefan Posch just as Dani Olmo was about to get a shot in. In the 29th minute Marc Cucarella appeared to have scored for Spain when he smashed for ball in following a goalmouth scramble from a corner. However, the referee had given a free klick for obstruction (probably by Pau Cubarsi) on Schlager. For reasons unclear, the commentator took about 30 seconds to cotton on, he was still talking about the goal, way after the players were looking unhappy/complaining. In the 32nd minute Yamal received the ball on the right wing and proceeded on a mazy run that took him along the byeline, before his low driven cross was deflected to safety by Schlager. When the ball was recycled Mikel Oyarzabal's shot from the edge of the area was touched around the far post by Schlager.

In the 36th minute, Cucarella's low cross from the left was side footed into the net by Oyarzabal as Schlager, who was unsighted, stood rooted to the spot. 1-0 to Spain. In the 38th minute, Lamal twisted and turned on the edge of the area and finally unleashed a shot which weas straight at Schlager. In the 45th minute an attacking move for Austria was eventually thwarted by the offside flag. In the 2nd minute of stoppage time, a 30 metre free kick from Alex Baena smacked the crossbar with Schlager beaten. When the ball fell, Cubarsi's header was deflected across goal by two Austrian defenders into the path of Yamal who hammered it goalwards, but Schlager was well placed to block the effort. Half time, 1-0 to Spain.

In the 49th minute Oyarzabal won possession in midfield and headed towards goal, driving his shot straight at Schlager. In the 54th minute Spain's Rodri had a shot which was deflected around the post for a corner. In the 61st minute Sabitzer's cross found Sasa Kalajdzic's head, but his header went over. In the 62nd minute Lamal's pass to Olmo resulted in the latter's shot being blocked. After 65 minutes Baena's short driven cross into the area was met with a thumping header from Porro. 2-0 to Spain. It was Porro's first international goal. In the 78th minute Ferran Torres' header at the far post sailed over the top. in the 79th minute some quick one touch passing from Austria led to a shot by Marko Arnautovic which went wide. In the 82nd minute, Posch's header went wide. In the 85th minute after some pinballing, the ball fell to Yamal whose snapshot was blocked on the line by David Alaba. In the 89th minute Cucarella's exquisitely curled cross from the left found a very unmarked and very onside Oyarzabal who sidefooted the ball past Schlager into the far corner of the net. 3-0 to Spain.

La Roja progressed, while the Austrians departed feeling they had not given a true account of their abilities in this match. Unai Simon's clean sheet was his fifth in successive matches at World Cup Finals tournaments, equalling Walter Zenga's record for Italy in 1990. Simon has now gone goalless for 519 minutes in World Cup matches, beating Zenga's record of 517 minutes from 1990. Spain progressed to play Portugal in the Round of 16.
2. In the twelfth knockout match of the Round of 32, Portugal played Croatia in Toronto, Ontario. What was the final score?

In the 9th minute Pedro Neto's cross from the right just evaded the head of Cristiano Ronaldo. In the 13th minute Ronaldo smashed a 30 metre free kick into the wall, it was blocked by the nether regions of Marin Pongracic as he jumped. In the 16th minute a Nuno Mendes corner for Portugal was headed over by Renato Veiga. In the 23rd minute a Mendes cross was headed behind under pressure from Neto by Pongracic. In the 30th minute, a cross from the right by Neto again just evaded Ronaldo in the Croatian area. After 32 minutes a Fernandes cross was blocked behind for a corner. In the 1st minute of stoppage time another Neto cross was met by Leao whose volley went over the top. Half time, score was 0-0.

In the 61st minute a long ball was expertly brought down by Ronaldo, his next touch put it past Livakovic, but he was ruled offside.

In the 64th minute a Mendes corner found its way through everyone in the area for a goal kick. VAR recommended the referee take a stroll to the pitchside monitor to consider a penalty. Leao was being pulled back on the reply. Decision was penalty kick. By now it was the 68th minute. Ronaldo stepped up and put in down the middle. Score was 1-1. In the 75 minute Kovacic's shot from outside the area hit the post, Vlasic gathered the ball and his cross was headed down to Kovacic again whose shot was tipped over by Costa. In the 76th minute Mario Pasalic's cross from the left was controlled by Matanovic, whose eventual shot was blocked by Costa. In the 80th minute a long ball found Luka Sucic through the middle and his one touch and control saw the shot go in off the post. But he was offside.

In the 4th minute of stoppage time Leao's cross from the left found the head of Goncalo Ramos who made no mistake. 2-1 to Portugal. In the 12th minute of stoppage time a cross from the left was held by Costa. In the 13th minute of stoppage time a cross from the left by Perisic deflected off Pasalic in the six yard box, hit the Portuguese defender Ruben Neves, and Josko Gvardiol stabbed it into the net. However, after VAR review and another trip to the monitor, the referee ruled offside. No goal. Full time, 2-1 to Portugal.

Ronaldo's goal was his first in a World Cup Finals knockout match, which also made him the oldest player to score in a knockout match, eclipsing the record held by his fellow countryman, Pepe. Portugal progressed to pay Spain in the Round of 16.

In the 50th minute Belghali's cross from the right was met by Riyad Mahrez in the penalty area, and his first time shot was blocked by Zakaria. In the 58th minute Ruben Vargas made space in the Algerian area but his fierce shot was so misplaced it went out for a throw in. In the 61st minute a Swiss corner sailed out at the far post. In the 75th minute a Swiss cross from the right was half cleared and fell to Fabian Rieder whose shot was also blocked. In the 81st minute a cross from Zakaria found Rieder at the far post with an open goal to aim at, but his side footed attempt came off his heel and the Algerian keeper Luca Zidane was able to bat it away. That was the miss of the tournament to date.

In the 88th minute Anis Moussa cut inside from the right and his chipped shot to the far post for a dive from Kobel to push it away for a corner. However, an Algerian player near the keeper changed the ruling to a free kick. End of extra time, no additional score, it remained at 1-1. The 2026 World Cup tournament goes to its third penalty shootout. Here is the summary:
