Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ingo Hoffmann had a promising future in Formula One while being groomed by a legendary racing family. What Brazilian racing dynasty tried to help Hoffmann in his short Formula One career?

Answer: Fittipaldi

Hoffmann drove for the Fittipaldi-owned Copersucar in 1976 and 1977. Sadly, many felt he was rushed into F1 thanks to his links with the Fittipaldis. In six races, he had a career-best finish of seventh at the 1977 Brazilian Grand Prix. Hoffmann had a much better career in the Brazilian Stock Car Championship series, where he won the series twelve times.
2. Ricardo Zunino got his miraculous Formula One start thanks to the sudden retirement of Niki Lauda. The same couldn't be said for his career. How many races did Zunino compete in?

Answer: 11

Zunino raced for Brabham in 1979 and 1980, and Tyrrell in 1981. He had two career seventh place finishes, 1979 in Canada and 1980 in Argentina.
3. Volker Weidler failed to qualify in all his attempts for the troubled Rial team in 1989. How many races did he attempt?

Answer: 10

Weidler, the 1985 German F3 champion, won the 24 Hours at LeMans in 1991. He retired from racing in 1992 due to tinnitus. Weidler was one of five drivers for Rial in 1989.
4. How many drivers did Fondmetal employ in its short history?

Answer: 4

In 1991, the team had Gabriele Tarquini and Olivier Grouillard. In 1992, the team expanded to two cars, with Tarquini, Andrea Chiesa, and Eric van de Poele driving. Fondmetal attempted 42 races, but failed to qualify 17 times and never finished better than 10th.
5. Germany's Bernd Schneider was the 1987 Formula 3 champion who moved into F1 the following year. Unfortunately, his F3 success didn't carry over into F1. Schneider actually failed to qualify for 13 consecutive races with Zakspeed.

Answer: True

Schneider attempted 34 races, but only made nine of them for Zakspeed (1988-1989) and Arrows (1990). He found success after F1, winning two Interserie titles and three DTM championships.
6. What French driver ran for March in 1992 and Pacific in 1994?

Answer: Paul Belmondo

Belmondo attempted 11 races for a fading March team in 1992, which would net six DNQs. After testing for Benetton in 1993, he ran for the awful Pacific team in 1994, where he failed to make 14 of his 16 attempts.
7. Jean-Marc Gounon raced for Minardi in 1994.

Answer: False

The Frenchman ran two races for Minardi in 1993 and seven for Simtek in 1994. Gounon was the 1989 French F3 champion, ran the next three seasons in F3000, tested for the subpar Larousse team in 1993, and gave Simtek its best career finish of ninth in the 1994 French Grand Prix.
8. What year did Gianfranco Brancatelli drive for Kauhsen and Merzario?

Answer: 1979

Brancatelli had the unfortunate distinction of driving for two of the worst F1 teams of 1979. After two attempts with Kauhsen and one with Merzario, Brancatelli competed in the European Touring Car Championship and was the 1985 series champion.
9. What team did Shinji Nakano drive for in 1997?

Answer: Prost

Nakano made 17 races in 1997 for Prost, scoring two sixth place finishes. He also raced for Minardi in 1998. Nakano later competed in CART.
10. How many races did Argentina's Oscar Larrauri successfully attempt?

Answer: 8

Larrauri attempted 21 races for EuroBrun in 1988 and 1989. He failed to make 13 of them, including all five attempts in 1989. Larrauri won the South American Super Touring Championship in 1997 and 1998.
