Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. London was the first city to host the modern Olympic games three times. In which of the following years did London NOT host the Olympic games?

Answer: 2000

London was not only the first city to host the summer Olympics three times. London hosted the 4th modern Olympic games in 1908, the 14th in 1948 and the 30th in 2012. Sydney hosted the Olympics in 2000.

2. Which of these is NOT a division of a game or match in a sport?

Answer: triangle

There are nine innings in a standard baseball game (more if the score is tied after nine innings). Tennis matches are divided into sets. Depending on the rules of the specific competition a player may win a tennis match by winning two out of three sets or three out of five sets.

A polo match has six periods called chukkas (or chuckkers) of seven minutes each. Hockey games are divided into three periods, but these are not called triangles.

3. What sport am I watching if I see the participants assume a ballet leg or Flemish position and perform a barracuda and dolphin maneuver?

Answer: Synchronized Swimming

Originally called rhythmic swimming the sport was pioneered by Australian Annette Kellerman in the early 20th century. In 1984 it became an official Olympic sport, but competitors still face difficulties in having their sport taken seriously by the general public.

4. Which sport is played in three formats internationally - test matches, one day internationals and Twenty20?

Answer: Cricket

Cricket was traditionally played in the test match format. Both teams had two innings each to bat with the game being played over five days. This was later found to be too slow for the television viewing audience and the one day international format was introduced. Reducing the game to a one day affair, ODIs had each team bat for one innings that lasted 50 overs. Even this was found to be too long for the millennial attention span giving us the Twenty20 format where each innings is reduced to 20 overs. Each format requires different skill sets with only a handful of players dominating all three styles.

5. What is the archaic term used in golf that describes a player not being able to lift an opponent's ball if it lies in his path to the hole?

Answer: Stymie

This was used in singles play and only if the balls were not within six inches of each other. The player would be forced to attempt to either draw or slice his ball around the obstacle ball to get to the hole. Should he make contact with his opponent's ball he has no option but to play his own ball from the point where it has finished.

His opponent, on the other hand, has the choice or playing his ball from the new lie or placing it back in its original position. Should you knock your opponent's ball into the hole, your opponent is considered to have holed out.

The stymie was effectively removed from the rules in 1952.

6. Four of the greatest baseball players -- Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle -- all played for the same club at one stage in their careers. Which Club was it?

Answer: New York Yankees

Collectively at least one of the four (but never more than two at the same time) played for the Yankees between 1920 to 1969. The Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers moved to San Francisco and Los Angeles respectively in 1957 so Mantle could not have played for either of these two clubs.

The Mets were formed in 1962 so Ruth, Gehrig and DiMaggio could not have played for the Mets.

7. What sport is played by the Edmonton Oilers?

Answer: Ice hockey

Based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Edmonton Oilers were founded in 1971. In the 1980s the team won the Stanley Cup, ice hockey's premier trophy, no less than five times, and for this feat received dynasty status in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

8. BASEBALL: The most prolific manager ever in baseball was Connie Mack, who won over 3,500 games and lost over 3,500 games. Mack had a habit of leaving the ballpark early when his team, the Philadelphia Athletics, was playing poorly. Why was he never fired for it?

Answer: he was an owner of the team

A beloved figure in Philadelphia who managed for fifty years (1901 to 1950), Mack's example would not jive in the modern era. Having a manager accountable only to himself is not something any owner can do now that MLB is a very big business.

9. Player-managers in Major League Baseball are rare. There is no time to relax and you really need to "hustle". Who was the last person to hold these positions simultaneously?

Answer: Pete Rose

Pete Rose (A.K.A. "Charlie Hustle") played and managed for the Cincinnati Reds in 1984-1986. Leo Durocher held both jobs with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s and Ty Cobb performed this dual role with the Detroit Tigers in the 1920s.
Babe Ruth never managed any team in Major League Baseball.

10. OLYMPIC GAMES 2012: Which Briton won the gold medal for the men's long jump at these games in London?

Answer: Greg Rutherford

Easily identifiable by his red hair, Greg Rutherford subsequently appeared on a panel show where the host rebuked him for "jumping ahead" in a scenario. Quick as a flash the opposing team captain said "he's allowed to do that, him". The other names were gold medal winners in other events; Bradley Wiggins for Cycling (men's time trial), Andy Murray for tennis and Mo Farah for the men's 10,000 metres.
