Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the technique utilized by Dick Fosbury at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in the high jump, that propelled him to win a gold medal?

Answer: Fosbury flop

Dick Fosbury was born in Portland, OR, USA in 1947 and he started experimenting with different high jump techniques while in high school. Fosbury was deterred by the straddle technique, in which jumpers were face down and lifted their legs sequentially over the bar.

He then developed what would be called the Fosbury flop in which jumpers run diagonally toward the bar, jump clearing the bar backwards head-first and then curve their bodies and lift their legs to get the whole body past. While Fosbury was in high school, the landing surface was changed to padded mats rather than a wood chip pit. Obviously landing on one's back on a padded mat was much more comfortable than wood chips or sand so during the 1960s most colleges and high schools switched to padded mats. Fosbury's gold medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics prompted many other high jumpers to utilize the Fosbury flop. Dick Fosbury died on March 12, 2023 at the age of 76.
2. What unusual circumstance occurred with the world record set by swimmer Shiro Hashizume in the 1500m freestyle on August 16, 1949?

However, Hashizume's world record didn't even last a day as Hironoshin Furuhashi posted a time of 18:19.0 on the same day at the same meet in LA and became the new world record holder. Three years later at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Hashizume won a silver medal in the 1500m freestyle. Shiro Hashizume died on March 9, 2023 at the age of 94.
