Answer: Penn Quakers

The University of Pennsylvania compiled a 14-0 record. By comparison, Yale ended 1895 with a 13-0-2 record. It was the second consecutive year for Penn to take the championship. It was the first year that the Quakers played at Franklin Field.
2. ICE HOCKEY. The Colored Hockey League began play in 1895. In which Canadian province did the first game occur?

Answer: Nova Scotia

The game involved the Halifax Stanleys and Dartmouth Jubilees. The league involved several teams and was focused on the Maritime Provinces and at times numbered as many as a dozen teams. The league lasted until 1930.
3. HORSE RACING. In 1895, which of the Triple Crown races was NOT won by Belmar?

Answer: Kentucky Derby

In 1895, the Kentucky Derby was won by Halma. The Belmont Stakes that year was actually delayed until early November-several months after the other two. The term "Triple Crown" was not commonly used until the 1920s.

Oxford won the race for the sixth year in a row by two-and-a-half lengths. The course of the race took in 4.2 miles of the River Thames. The time of the race was 20 minutes, 50 seconds. Oxford retook the lead after falling behind initially to Cambridge.

Answer: Scotland

Scotland had the best record that year with three victories as opposed to two for England, one for Wales, and none for Ireland. The series took place between January and March. Scotland managed to shut out Ireland that year, 6-0.
7. SKATING. Who won the World Allround Speed Skating Championship in 1895?

Answer: Jaap Eden

Jaap Eden of the Netherlands won the championship again in 1895 after winning it before in 1893. To win the championship he needed to win three of the following events: 500 meters, 1500 meters, 5000 meters and 10,000 meters. He won all but the 500 meter race. The incorrect answers were some of the other competitors that year.
8. TENNIS. Who won the men's singles event at the French Championships in 1895?

Answer: Andre Vacherot

Andre Vachelot not only won the men's singles tournament in 1895 at the French Championships (a precursor to the French Open), but also won it in 1894 and 1896. He would also win the men's doubles tournament in 1901 with his younger brother Marcel. At the time, the tournament was only open to members of French tennis clubs and play was best of three sets. Vachelot won in two.
9. VOLLEYBALL. In 1895, William Morgan invented volleyball. What was the original name he gave it?

Answer: Mintonette

Morgan (1870-1942) originally called his sport "Mintonette". He was inspired to create a sport for older players than basketball that would still take athletic skill. The game would eventually be renamed "Volleyball" since the players would volley the ball over the net.

"Valkyrie III" was designed by George Watson and built by D & W Henderson. The yacht was built in May 1895. Officially, "Valkyrie III" lost to "Defender" in the America's Cup series 3-0, but the event proved to be controversial when "Valkyrie III" was stripped of victory in the second race. The yacht was broken up in 1901.
