World Sports by Year Trivia Questions

1. What soccer player, born in the protectorate of French Morocco in 1933, and set a record in 1958 by scoring 13 goals in one FIFA World Cup tournament?

From Quiz
May They Rest in Peace (Sports) - March 2023

Answer: Just Fontaine

Just Fontaine was born in Marrakech and he moved to Casablanca to attend college. Fontaine played professionally for USM Casablanca (1950-1953), Nice (1953-1956) and Reims (1956-1962) and he scored more than 200 goals over his senior career. However, Fontaine went down in the record books for his stellar play at the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden. Fontaine scored 13 goals in France's six games including an incredible four goals in the third-place game against West Germany. Just Fontaine died in the early morning of March 1, 2023 at the age of 89.

2. What was the name of the technique utilized by Dick Fosbury at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in the high jump, that propelled him to win a gold medal?

From Quiz May They Rest in Peace (Olympians) - March 2023

Answer: Fosbury flop

Dick Fosbury was born in Portland, OR, USA in 1947 and he started experimenting with different high jump techniques while in high school. Fosbury was deterred by the straddle technique, in which jumpers were face down and lifted their legs sequentially over the bar. He then developed what would be called the Fosbury flop in which jumpers run diagonally toward the bar, jump clearing the bar backwards head-first and then curve their bodies and lift their legs to get the whole body past. While Fosbury was in high school, the landing surface was changed to padded mats rather than a wood chip pit. Obviously landing on one's back on a padded mat was much more comfortable than wood chips or sand so during the 1960s most colleges and high schools switched to padded mats. Fosbury's gold medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics prompted many other high jumpers to utilize the Fosbury flop. Dick Fosbury died on March 12, 2023 at the age of 76.

The game against the Steelers looked like it was going to be a blowout when Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw a touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson that was quickly followed up with an interception by Nick Collins that was also run in for a touchdown. After the first quarter, Green Bay was up 14-0. Pittsburgh didn't just lay down and die, though, picking up 10 points of their own in the second quarter. Green Bay's 7 points in that quarter put the show at 21-10 at the half in favor of the Packers. The Steelers fought back in the third quarter with a touchdown, while blanking the Packers for 15 minutes and pulling to within four points. A touchdown by the Packers early in the fourth, though, was all that was needed to secure the victory, although a few more points were recorded by both teams to put the final tally at 31-25.
