Answer: University of Pennsylvania

All four teams won the championship in the years AROUND 1897. The University of Pennsylvania Quakers, though, had the best record in 1897 at 15-0. They outscored their opponents 463-20. George Washington Woodruff was the head coach. Home games were played at historic Franklin Field.
2. AMERICAN FOOTBALL - The loser of the 1897 Western Pennsylvania Professional Football Circuit, the Latrobe Athletic Association, had which distinction?

Answer: First team to be fully professional for the full season

While there were professional players in games before this, Latrobe was the first team where everyone was professional (paid) for the entire season. In 1897, Latrobe lost to the Greensburg Athletic Association by 6-0, finishing with a season record of 10-2. The team lasted from 1895 to 1909. The Western Pennsylvania circuit lasted from 1890 to 1940

BAA stands for Boston Athletic Association. Only 15 runners participated in 1897, the first year of the marathon. John McDermott finished with a time of 2:55:10. It is thought that the race was about 25 miles long as the length of the the marathon was not yet standardized.

This was the only win of Lloyd's career. The Open took place on September 17 in Chicago. Loyd won by one stroke over Willie Anderson. The Open was only 36 holes. The very next year it would double to 72 holes. The prize fund was only $335.00, of which the winner's share was only $150.00.

Although the Winnipeg Victorias were the losing team in 1896 and 1898, in 1897 it was the Ottawa Capitals. The victory in the match was by an amazing 15-2. On their way to the Stanley Cup, Montreal put together a 8-0 record in Amateur Hockey Association of Canada.

Answer: Canada

Jack McCullough won the 1897 championship on behalf of the Dominion of Canada. The championship was held in Canada that year and was the first held outside Europe. It turned out that due to an error the 5,000 meter race was only 4,200 meters and needed to be reheld. Due to the late date, this second running only had four competitors.

Answer: Paul Ayme

Paul Ayme won the Men's single championship for four consecutive (1897-1900). The incorrect choices were the three losers in the finals. (Paul Lebreton was the losing finalist in 1898 and 1899.). The French Open was not considered a Grand Slam event until the 1920s.
