Yale went a perfect 16-0 during the season shutting out 13 of their opponents. Of their other opponents, the three teams collectively scored a total of 13 points. William Rhodes was the coach for 1893 and 1894. The Bulldogs scored 485 points during the season. Home games were played at Yale Field.
2. ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL. In 1894, who won the (English) Football League?

Answer: Aston Villa

While these were the top four teams for the 1893-94 season, it was Aston Villa who were the top team that year. The club dates to 1874, first winning the league in 1894. They are considered the most successful English team of the Victorian era.
3. BASEBALL. Which National League team won the initial Temple Cup in 1894?

Answer: New York Giants

Each year would see the top two teams of the National League facing off in a best of seven series. The Orioles would win in the regular season but lose in the post season. The cup was named for the president of the National League.

Taylor's win in 1894 was the first of his five Open wins over the next 20 years. Taylor is considered one of the best golfers of all time. His margin of victory in the championship was five strokes. The Open was held at Royal St. George's Golf Club in Sandwich, England.

The race course ran between Paris and Rouen and was about 78 miles long. The race took place on July 22 and was organized by the newspaper "Le Petit Journal". Of the competitors, there were 21 vehicles which started the race and 17 vehicles which finished it.

Answer: Oxford

The race took place on March 17 on the River Thames. Oxford needed 21 minutes and 39 seconds to win the race. Oxford's margin of victory was 3 1/2 boat lengths. It was oxford's fifth consecutive victory.
9. RUGBY UNION. Who won the Home Nations Championship in rugby in 1894?

Answer: Ireland

The tournament took place between January and March. Ireland won all three of its matches. Interestingly, the other three teams finished with identical records of one win and two draws each. This was Ireland's first series win in the history of the tournament.

Answer: The two were twins

Herbert and Wilfred Baddeley were each 22. The brothers won men's doubles four times at Wimbledon in the 1890s. Wilfred lost the men's singles tournament in that year to Joshua Pim. They would later work as solicitors.
