Wade defeated top seed Chris Evert in the semi-finals, then, with the Queen watching from the royal box, beat Dutchwoman Betty Stove 4-6 6-3 6-1 in the final. She would prove to be the last British winner of the event in the 20th century. The men's singles final saw Bjorn Borg defeat Jimmy Connors in a five-set thriller.
