Answer: Black

The Chicago Blackhawks joined the NHL in 1926. They chose the name "Black hawks" after their Chicago coffee tycoon owner's military division in World War 1. In 1986, they combined the two words to be the "Blackhawks".
The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the Original Six teams.
2. In 2024, the newest NHL team was the Mammoth in what western state, known for their jazzy basketball team?

Answer: Utah

The Arizona Coyotes folded in 2024 and sold their assets to a new team, Utah Mammoth, located in Salt Lake City. Fittingly the team's colors are rock black, mountain blue, and salt white. This matches the NBA team, the Utah Jazz, who shares the Delta Arena.
3. The Tampa Bay Lightning actually play in St. Petersburg, not Tampa.

Answer: False

While the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team plays at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, the NHL team does play in downtown Tampa. Their stadium, Benchmark International Arena, is right next to the cruise lines on the Tampa Bay. The team moved there in 1996, when it opened as the Ice Palace.

Answer: Anaheim

In 1992, Disney released a hockey themed movie called, "The Mighty Ducks". In 1993, the NHL awarded a franchise to Anaheim and they were called the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. In 2006, they became the Anaheim Ducks.

Answer: Washington Capitals

First off, eagles don't have red wings. The eagle is a symbol for the USA so it's fitting the National Hockey League team in the country's capital contains an eagle in the logo. In addition, the Capitals logo features three red stars to honor the area of Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C.
6. Which of these cities lost its NHL franchise in the 1970s?

Answer: Kansas City

Kansas City had the Royals in Major League Baseball and the Chiefs in the National Football League but no NHL team. Back in 1974, they had the Kansas City Scouts but they lasted only three seasons in Kansas City. In 1976 they moved and became the Colorado Rockies. The franchise moved again in 1982 and became the New Jersey Devils.
7. Colorado's NHL team honors their location. What is the team nickname?

Answer: Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche play in Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado. The Mile High City is located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. While having an avalanche would be catastrophic, the Denver-based team use the name to symbolize their unstoppable force on the ice and pay homage to the mountains.
The Quebec Nordiques moved to Colorado in 1995 and became the Avalanche.
8. The teams in St. Louis and Columbus each have what primary color in their team's nickname?

Answer: Blue

The St. Louis Blues got their name after a W.C. Handy jazz song from 1914, "Saint Louis Blues". The Columbus Blue Jackets name comes from the jackets that Union soldiers wore during the American Civil War. The blue jackets worn by the military came from production in Columbus, Ohio.
9. Which NHL team name is technically "grammatically incorrect"?

Answer: Maple Leafs

The plural of leaf is leaves not leafs. But the Toronto Maple Leafs chose the name to honor a World War 1 military unitl called the Toronto Maple Leaf Regiment. They were Canadian soldiers who proudly wore a maple leaf logo on their uniform. Team owner Conn Smythe chose the incorrect spelling to honor the military insignia. The team were a member of the NHL when it started in 1917.

Answer: Bruins

The Boston Bruins are one of the Original Six teams. When founded in 1926, the team was owned by First National Stories owner, Art Ross. The grocery store chain used the colors brown and yellow and the team wanted a fierce animal to represent the team. Bruins are brown bears so they became the Boston Bruins.
