Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jimmy Johnson was the head coach for Oklahoma State from 1979-1983 before he bolted to the University of Miami, where he went on to win a national championship. What coach followed Johnson?

Answer: Pat Jones

Jones coached from 1984-1994, and had a bit of success until NCAA sanctions that were committed during Johnson's tenure crippled the team. Jones eventually left to coach under Johnson in the NFL.
2. The Cowboys have been members of several different conferences over the years. What conference did they start out in?

Answer: Southwest

The Cowboys (then the Oklahoma A&M Aggies) were founding members of the Southwest Conference in 1915, along with Arkansas, Baylor, Oklahoma, Rice, Southwestern, Texas, and Texas A&M. However, early membership in that conference fluctuated and Oklahoma State left in 1925 to join the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association. That group split into the Big Six Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference in 1928, with Oklahoma State joining the latter.
3. Oklahoma State has produced a number of Consensus All-Americans at running back. Who was the school's first at that position?

Answer: Bob Fenimore

Fenimore was an All-American in 1944. In 1945 was named a Consensus All-American. In that year, he finished third in the Heisman voting. Miller was an All-American in 1976 and again 1977, when he was a Consensus All-American. That year, he finished second in the Heisman vote to Earl Campbell. Ward (1969) and Gofourth (1976) were both Consensus All-Americans, but they were on the OL.
4. In 1980, the NCAA expanded to having 15 bowl games. That continued until 1990, when it moved to 19 games. During that ten-year span, from 1980 to 1989, how many bowl games did Oklahoma State go to?

Answer: 6

The Cowboys won 4 out of those 6 games, including a 62-14 victory over Wyoming in the 1988 Holiday Bowl. The six bowl games were:

1981 : 16-33 : Independence Bowl vs. Texas A&M
1983 : 24-14 : Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl vs. Naylor
1984 : 21-14 : Gator Bowl vs. South Carolina
1985 : 23-24 : Gator Bowl vs. Florida State
1987 : 35-33 : Sun Bowl vs. Wes Virginia
1988 : 62-14 : Holiday Bowl vs. Wyoming.
5. In 1945, Oklahoma State (then Oklahoma A&M) went to its first bowl game. What was the bowl?

Answer: Cotton Bowl

The 1945 Cotton Bowl featured Oklahoma A&M vs. Texas Christian. The Aggies (as they were then called) won handily, 34-0.
6. In 2003, the stadium for the Oklahoma State Cowboys was rechristened "Boone Pickens Stadium" after billionaire alumnus T. Boone Pickens, who donated significantly to the school's athletic program. Prior to that, what was the name of that venue?

Answer: Lewis Field

Lewis Field was named in 1913 after a popular administrator and dean at the university, Dr. Layman Lewis. The stadium is one of only a few in football that are oriented East-West.
7. Oklahoma State's main in-state rival is football powerhouse Oklahoma and, for over a century since they began regular play in 1904, the Sooners dominated the series. However, there have been some curious bright spots for Oklahoma State over the years. For instance, in the ten games played between 1925 and 1934, how many times did Oklahoma State lose to Oklahoma?

Answer: 2

During this stretch-- back when ties were a feature of NCAA football games-- Oklahoma State lost just twice, once in 1925 and again in 1928. Oklahoma State won four games (1927-30-32-33). The other four games during that stretch (1926-29-31-34) were ties.
8. Oklahoma State's minor in-state rival (after Oklahoma) is the University of Tulsa. Though they have rarely played in the same conference, for twenty-two seasons (from 1935-56) they played regularly in the Missouri Valley Conference, and one or the other won the conference title in sixteen of those years. This span saw the teams meet for the first time where both were ranked in the AP poll. What year was that?

Answer: 1945

Oklahoma State entered that game on November 10 at 5-0 and ranked #11. Tulsa was 5-1 and ranked #19. The Cowboys beat the Golden Hurricane 12-6. Tulsa ended the year at 8-3 and finished #17 in the poll. Oklahoma State finished 9-0 and ranked #5. The 1943 game saw the largest margin of victory between the two schools during this span, with #19 Tulsa winning 55-6 over a hapless Oklahoma State team.
9. From 1958-95, Oklahoma State was in the Big Eight Conference. The conference featured perennial powerhouses like Nebraska and Oklahoma. How many times in that span did Oklahoma State face an opponent ranked #1?

Answer: 4

Though they did play quite a few #3 and #2 teams during this span -- including Arkansas, Colorado, Nebraska, and Oklahoma -- it's not surprising that their #1 foes during the Big Eight years were Nebraska (1971, losing 41-13 and 1983, losing 14-10) and Oklahoma (1974, losing 44-13 and 1987, losing 21-10).
10. In 1988, Oklahoma State running back Barry Sanders had one of the greatest seasons ever, and set NCAA records for rushing yards (2,628) and rushing touchdowns (37). However, this was before the 2002 change, when the NCAA began including conference championships and bowl games to those totals. What would his numbers be if his 1988 Holiday Bowl game were included?

Answer: 2850 & 42

Sanders rushed for 222 yards and 5 touchdowns in that game. During the season he also scored a punt TD and a kick-off TD (on the opening kick-off of the season!) so he crossed the end zone a total of 44 times that year. Pretty amazing!
