Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Inaugural Super Bowl

The Green Bay Packers, champions of the NFL, defeated the AFL's Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 in the first-ever Super Bowl on January 15, 1967. It was played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The first half was very competitive with the Packers leading 14-10. The Packers then went on to score 21 unanswered points in the second half to secure the win. Packers quarterback Bart Starr was named MVP and threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns.

The game was not a sellout, tickets were expensive for the time, and it was considered by many to be an exhibition game to determine which league was superior. However, the TV coverage garnered many views. Interestingly, it was broadcast on two separate networks and was originally called the "AFL-NFL World Championship Game".
2. Namath's "Guarantee"

The New York Jets defeated the heavily favored Baltimore Colts 16-7 in Super Bowl III on January 12, 1969. It was played at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida. New York led 7-0 at halftime. The Jets then built a 16-0 lead on three field goals by Jim Turner. The Colts managed to score their only touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Baltimore's quarterback Earl Morrall, filling in for the injured Johnny Unitas, threw three interceptions before Unitas finally entered the game in the third quarter. The Jets secured the win.

Earlier, on January 9 of that year, Bills quarterback Joe Namath attended an awards banquet at the Miami Touchdown Club. During the event, a heckler in the crowd yelled that his team, the Colts, would easily defeat the Jets. Namath, agitated by this comments and the general disrespect shown to his team and the AFL, responded famously with, "We're going to win the game. I guarantee it". The comments made front page news. Namath then backed up his famous boast by completing 17 of 28 passes for 206 yards and was named the Super Bowl MVP.
3. Dolphins Perfect Season

The Miami Dolphins defeated the Washington Redskins 14-7 in Super Bowl VII, completing a perfect undefeated season. The game was played on January 14, 1973, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Dolphins scored two touchdowns in the first half: a 28-yard pass from quarterback Bob Griese to Howard Twilley and a 1-yard run by Jim Kiick. The Redskins were shut out for most of the game. In the fourth quarter, Dolphins kicker Garo Yepremian attempted a field goal which was blocked. He attempted a pass and the Redskins scored on the resulting interception. Despite this, Miami held on to the win.

The Dolphins entered the game with an undefeated 16-0 record and capped their historic run with the victory over Washington. Miami's defense, known as the "No-Name Defense," dominated the Redskins' offense almost the entire game. Safety Jake Scott was named MVP after recording two interceptions. The night after their Super Bowl win, thousands of fans greeted the team's charter flight at the Miami airport, celebrating their amazing 17-0 record.
4. "Riggins' Run" on 4th and 1 Vs Dolphins

The Washington Redskins defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-17 in Super Bowl XVII on January 30, 1983, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The Dolphins led the Redskins 17-10 at halftime helped by a long touchdown pass and a kickoff return touchdown. The Redskins, however, dominated the second half of the game, scoring 17 unanswered points and wearing down the Miami defense.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Redskins were trailing 17-13 and faced a crucial fourth-and-1 at the Miami 43-yard line. Head coach Joe Gibbs made the gutsy call to go for the first down instead of punting, with the play call "I-Right 70 Chip" a handoff designed for John Riggins. The offensive line, known as "The Hogs," created a hole on the left and Riggins broke through and scored a touchdown. The touchdown put Washington ahead for good and garnered Riggins the MVP.
5. Buffalo Bills "Wide Right"

In Super Bowl XXV the New York Giants defeated the heavy-favorite Buffalo Bills 20-19 on January 27, 1991 at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The Bills took a 12-10 lead into halftime including a touchdown, a field goal, and a safety. The Giants, however, started the second half with a lengthy 9:29 drive. The 14-play, 75-yard drive was a slow march down the field that wore down the Bills' defense and ended with a touchdown. The Giants then did their own long march down the field and with seconds left in the game the score was 20-19 with the Giants ahead.

With eight seconds left and Buffalo needing a field goal for the win, kicker Scott Norwood attempted a 47-yard kick. This would give Buffalo the win and their first Super Bowl championship. The snap and hold were good, but the kick sailed wide to the right, and the Giants won the game. The final score, 20-19, marked the first Super Bowl to be decided by a single point and the start of an unbelieveable four consecutive Super Bowl losses for the Bills.
6. "The Tackle" by "Greatest Show on Turf"

Super Bowl XXXIV was played on January 30, 2000, at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, with the St. Louis Rams defeating the Tennessee Titans 23-16. In the first half, the Rams (known as "The Greatest Show on Turf") held the Titans scoreless, building a 9-0 lead on three field goals. The Titans offense was largely ineffective in the first half and was forced to punt on most of its possessions. In the second half, the Titans scored 16 unanswered points to tie the game at 16-16 before the St. Louis Rams retook the lead at 23-16 with 1:54 left.

Titans quarterback Steve McNair drove his team down the field, getting the ball to the Rams' 10-yard line with only six seconds left. On the final play of the game, McNair completed a pass to Kevin Dyson over the middle, but Rams linebacker Mike Jones made a game-saving tackle, bringing Dyson down just one yard short of the end zone just as the clock hit zero time left.
7. Adam Vinatieri "Clutch Kick"

Super Bowl XXXVI was played on February 3, 2002, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, with the New England Patriots defeating the heavily favored St. Louis Rams, 20-17. In the first half, the underdog New England Patriots built a surprising 14-3 lead over the Rams by capitalizing on two turnovers. Toward the end of the second half, the Rams quarterback Kurt Warner had scored on a short run and completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Proehl with 1:30 left in the game, tying the score at 17-17.

With no timeouts remaining, quarterback Tom Brady led the Patriots from their own 17-yard line into field goal range, completing five passes for 53 yards down the field. As time expired, the Patriots' kicker Adam Vinatieri drilled a 48-yard field goal to secure the 20-17 victory. It was the first Super Bowl ever won on the final play. The kick has since been considered the moment that launched the Patriots dynasty.
8. Manning throws the "Helmet Catch"

Super Bowl XLII was played on February 3, 2008, at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona when the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots 17-14. The Giants began the game with a record-setting 16-play, 63-yard drive that consumed nearly 10 minutes of clock time and ended in a field goal. The Patriots responded with a long drive, also, that ended in a touchdown. At half, the score was 7-3. After a scoreless third quarter, both teams got on the board with the Patriots on top 14-10 with 2:42 left in the game.

The Giants started their final drive from their own 17-yard line. On a crucial 3rd-and-5, Giants quarterback Eli Manning escaped multiple sacks and threw a pass downfield to David Tyree. Tyree made an amazing one-handed catch by pinning the ball against his helmet for a 32-yard gain, keeping the drive alive. Four plays later, the Giants scored and won the game and ended the Patriots' quest for a perfect season.
9. "Super Bowl Blackout"

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 in Super Bowl XLVII on February 3, 2013, in New Orleans. The game was jokingly called the "Harbaugh Bowl" for featuring opposing head coaches who were brothers (John and Jim Harbaugh). The Ravens took a dominant 21-6 lead into halftime against the 49ers after quarterback Joe Flacco threw three touchdown passes in the first half alone. The second half started with Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones returning the opening kickoff 108 yards for a touchdown, extending Baltimore's lead to 28-6.

However, shortly after Jones's touchdown, a power outage hit the Superdome, causing a 34-minute delay. The lights went out with 13:22 remaining in the third quarter, completely shifting the momentum of the game after play resumed. The 49ers mounted a comeback, scoring 17 unanswered points in a span of just over four minutes. After several back-and-forth plays, the Ravens managed to pull out the win. The contoversial blackout was said to have been a malfunction in a new electrical relay device.
10. Patriots Record-Breaking Comeback Vs Falcons

Super Bowl LI featured a huge comeback, with the New England Patriots overcoming a 25-point deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 on February 5, 2017, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. It was the first time a Super Bowl went into overtime. The first half was all Atlanta Falcons as they took a commanding 21-3 lead over the Patriots. This was led by plays from the Falcons' quarterback Matt Ryan, an interception by the Falcons defense, and blunders by the Patriots.

The Falcons extended their lead in the third quarter to make it 28-3. Late in the quarter the Patriots began their comeback with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady to James White. In the fourth quarter, the Falcons began to collapse. There were questionable coaching calls, defensive mistakes, and physical exhaustion. The Patriots scored multiple unanswered points, tying the game at 28-28 and forcing an historic overtime. During overtime, James White of the Patriots sealed his historic performance by scoring his third touchdown of the game on a two-yard run, securing the 34-28 victory.
