Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ecuador

Ecuador dominated the chances in their first group match hitting the goal's crossbar multiple times. However, they couldn't score and in the 90th minute Ivory Coast scored a late goal to win 1-0. In their second game Ecuador played against debutantes Curacao but could only manage a scoreless draw so they needed a win against Germany to have any chance of moving on. Despite giving up a questionable goal in the second minute (there probably should have been a foul against Germany on the play), Ecuador equalized a few minutes later and then scored the game winner in the second half to take a 2-1 win and qualify as one of the best-eight third-placed teams.

This earned them a date with hosts Mexico in the Round of 32 at the fabled Azteca, the first stadium to host two World Cup finals. Mexico scored two goals in a 10 minute span in the first half which were the only goals of the game as Ecuador was knocked out 2-0. Ecuador was one of eight teams to finish the tournament with a win, a draw, and two losses. They finished tied with South Africa on points, goal differential, and goals but earned the 25th spot based primarily on having received one fewer red card.

This was Ecuador's second consecutive and fifth overall appearance in the World Cup with their first appearance in 2002. The only other time they made the knockouts was in 2006 where they were also eliminated after their first game.
2. South Africa

South Africa played in the opening game of the World Cup where they lost to hosts Mexico 2-0, in a rematch of the opening game of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The game saw three red cards given out, including two against South Africa. In their second game they scored a late goal to earn a 1-1 draw against Czechia (formerly the Czech Republic); and keep alive hope of making the knockout stage. They needed a win against favored South Korea to qualify and they were able to get it with a second half goal leading to a 1-0 final score. This earned South Africa a second place finish in the group.

Finishing in second place earnt them a match against fellow second-place finishers Canada. Although Canada was also one of the tournament hosts because they did not win their group they had to travel to southern California for the game. It was the first match of the knockout stage and appeared to be headed to 30 minutes of extra time, until Canada scored in stoppage time for a 1-0 win, sending South Africa home in 26th place.

This was South Africa's fourth appearance in the World Cup but their first since they hosted in 2010. Their other appearances came in 1998 and 2002. This was the first time they made it out of the group stage although, with the expansion to 48 teams. it was their worst final ranking at a World Cup.
3. Sweden

Sweden started off with a big 5-1 win over Tunisia. While it looked like that goal differential might serve them in good stead toward making the knockout rounds it was all wiped out in their second game when the Netherlands returned the favor with a 5-1 win of their own. This meant that Sweden needed a win or a draw in their final game against Japan. They drew 1-1, which left them with four points, enough to clinch a spot as one of the best-eight third-placed teams.

Unfortunately, that earnt them a game against France who had made the finals in both 2018 and 2022, winning the cup in 2018. Although it took until almost the end of the first half for France to break through, they scored in the 45th minute and then added two more in the second half for a 3-0 win knocking Sweden out in 27th place.

This was Sweden's twelfth appearance in the World Cup and first since 2018 when they made the quarterfinals. They finished in fourth place in 1938 and twice finished third, in both 1950 and 1994. But their best finish was as hosts in 1958 when they made the finals and finished as runners up to Brazil.
4. Austria

Austria opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over debutantes Jordan. They then faced defending champions Argentina and suffered a 2-0 loss. Based on their goal differential, they would finish second in the group with a win or a draw in their final group match against Algeria, but would be eliminated with a loss (as they would not be among the best-eight third-placed team). They took the lead twice, partway through each half, but both times Algeria equalised. Then Algeria took the lead early in stoppage time and it appeared as though Austria would be eliminated. However, about 90 seconds after play resumed, Austria scored to tie the game at 3-3 and finish in second place in the group.

This meant that they would play number 2 ranked Spain in the round of 32. Spain scored once in the first half and twice in the second to win 3-0 knocking Austria out in 28th place. This was Austria's eighth appearance in the World Cup but first since 1998. They finished in fourth place in their first World Cup in 1934 and third in their second in 1954. Other than that, they have been eliminated in the group stage each time prior to 2026, although in 1978 and 1982 there were multiple group stages and both times they made the second one.
5. Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia opened the 2026 tournament with a 1-1 draw against hosts Canada, scoring in the first half but giving up a goal in the second. Their second game was against Switzerland and was scoreless for over 70 minutes before Switzerland took the lead. Bosnia was then shown a red card and the flood gates opened. Switzerland scored two more goals before Bosnia got one of their own. Switzerland finished with one final goal to take a 4-1 win. That meant that Bosnia need a win in their final game against Qatar to have a chance at the knockouts. They won 3-1 and that was enough to be one of the best-eight third-placed teams.

In the Round of 32 they faced off against the co-hosts, the USA. The US was able to take an early lead but then the game changed midway through the second half when one of the US players was shown a red card and Bosnia went up a man. But, unlike in their game against Switzerland, the team with the extra man was unable to take advantage and the only goal scored during that time was by the ten-man US team from a free kick. The 2-0 loss relegated Bosnia to 29th place. They were tied with Sweden on points and goal differential but scored fewer goals (5) than Sweden (7) and Austria (6).

This was Bosnia's second World Cup having been knocked out in the group stage in 2014. Bosnian players had participated in the World Cup through 1990 as part of Yugoslavia but FIFA credits those results to Serbia.
6. Algeria

Algeria opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 3-0 loss to defending champions Argentina. They followed that up with a 2-1 come from behind win over Jordan. Since their group were the last to play their third set of matches, they knew that if they won their match against Austria they would finish second in the group and progress, to face number 2 ranked Spain in the Round of 32 ... while if they drew their last group match they would finish third in the group and face number 19 Switzerland in their next match as they would be one of the best-eight third- placed teams. If they lost they would be eliminated. So it would appear as though a draw would be their best outcome as they would face a lower ranked opponent than if they won. Going into stoppage time the match was tied at 2-2 so it seemed like optimal result. However, Algeria was able to score in stoppage time to go up 3-2, before Austria was able to tie things up and the game ended 3-3.

In the Round of 32 Algeria faced Switzerland where the Swiss scored early in each half to take a 2-0 win. The goalkeeper for Algeria in the knockout as well as in two of the group games was Luca Zidane son of French superstar and former World Cup winner Zinedine Zidane. The loss meant that Algeria finished in 30th place.

This was Algeria's fifth World Cup going back to 1982 and first since 2014. In 2014 they lost in the Round of 16, the first time they made the knockout stage. Interestingly enough, when they played in 1982 they were affected by controversy as the final games of each group were not played simultaneously. Since Algeria's last game was already complete, Austria and West Germany knew that both teams would go through to the next round while Algeria would be out, as long as West Germany beat Austria by one or two goals. West Germany won by one goal and Algeria was eliminated. Since then the final games in each group are played simultaneously to limit the advance knowledge of how teams must do to advance.

Fast forward to 2026 and Algeria and Austria played the final group game knowing that a draw would see both teams through. Unfortunately, with twelve teams competing for eight third place spots it's logistically impossible to play all 24 final group games simultaneously.
7. Senegal

Senegal had a tough start to the tournament with a 3-1 loss to 2022 runners up France, followed by a 3-2 loss to Norway. This meant that they needed a big win in their last group game against Iraq in order to have any chance at qualifying for the knockouts. Fortunately they were able to get a 5-0 win giving them a positive goal differential. It was just enough to be the last of the eight-best third-placed teams; to qualify for the knockouts.

In the Round of 32 they faced off against group winners and highly favored Belgium. But things didn't start quite as expected. Senegal scored midway through the first half and then again early in the second to take a 2-0 lead. For over 85 minutes Senegal looked the better team but then Belgium came back with two goals, in the 86th and 88th minutes, to send the game into 30 minutes of extra time. Just when it looked like Senegal would take the game to a penalty shootout to decide who would advance, Belgium was awarded a penalty kick and scored the winning goal in the 120+5th minute sending Senegal home in 31st place.

This was Senegal's third straight WC finals appearance and fourth overall. In 2022 they made the Round of 16 while in 2018 they were eliminated at the group stage. But their best and most well known result was in their 2002 debut when they started the tournament facing defending champion France. To most people's surprise they pulled off a 1-0 upset, which helped them qualify for the knockouts there as they drew their other two group stage games. In the knockouts they beat Sweden in added extra time in the Round of 16 before finally falling to Turkiye in the quarterfinals, also in added extra time.
8. Cape Verde

Cape Verde was considered one of the surprise teams of the tournament. Coming in as the 67th ranked team in the world they had to face number 2 Spain who pressured them the entire game. However, the Cape Verde defense held strong and earned the team a point with a 0-0 draw. They followed this up with a 2-2 draw against Uruguay and a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia, both teams that were also ranked higher than Cape Verde coming into the tournament. The three draws along with other results in the group meant the Cape Verde finished second in the group; and qualified for the round of 32.

In the round of 32 they had to play number 1 ranked and defending champions Argentina. Although they gave up a goal midway through the first half they equalised in the second and the game remained a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time. This meant that Cape Verde, one of the smallest countries to ever qualify for the World Cup played each of the top two ranked teams in the world to a draw after 90 minutes. But since this was a knockout game the teams had to play 30 minutes of added extra time.

Argentina scored very early in the extra time but Cape Verde fought back and equalised late in the first half of overtime. Finally, with about 10 minutes to go, Argentina scored and took a 3-2 lead; which was the final score aet. This meant that Cape Verde finished in 32nd place, lowest among teams that made the knockout stage. This was Cape Verde's first ever World Cup.
9. Iran

The Islamic Republic of Iran finished the group stage without s loss. Unfortunately, they also failed to win and unlike what happened in Cape Verde's group, three draws was only good for third place in the group; and ninth among the third-placed teams which meant they just missed qualifying for the knockout stage.

In their first group match they had to come from behind twice against New Zealand to earn a 2-2 draw. Their second game was a 0-0 draw against group favorites and eventual group winner Belgium. That meant that a win against Egypt would mean advancement, a loss would see them eliminated, and a draw would mean they had to wait for the remaining groups to finish. It appeared as though they had scored the game winner in stoppage time at the end of the match but the goal was correctly called back for an offside infraction. This meant a 1-1 draw and a wait to see what would happen in the other groups.

Going into the last games, all they needed was for Austria and Algeria not to draw with each other. Although they were tied 2-2 going into stoppage time it appeared as though Iran was through when Algeria went ahead 3-2. Unfortunately for Iran, Austria tied it up at 3-3 about 90 seconds later, which was how the game and Iran's tournament ended. Iran finished in 33rd place as the top team eliminated in the group stage.

This was Iran's fourth straight appearance in the World Cup and seventh overall. They have never advanced past the group stage including when they qualified to play in the tournament in 1978, 1998, and 2006.
10. South Korea

South Korea had a successful start to the tournament with a come from behind 2-1 win over Czechia (formerly the Czech Republic). In their second game they had to take on hosts Mexico and fell 1-0. Still, based on the other results in the group they only needed a draw against South Africa to clinch second place in the group and advance to the knockout stage. Despite South Africa being ranked 60th coming into the tournament, compared with Korea's 25th place ranking, Korea suffered their second consecutive 1-0 defeat and dropped to third in the group. As their group was one of the first to finish, they still had hopes of qualifying as one of the best-eight third-placed teams but alas it was not to be, as their -1 goal differential left them as the tenth best third place team and 34th overall.

This was the eleventh consecutive appearance in the tournament for South Korea and twelfth overall. Their first appearance was in 1954 where they were eliminated in the group stage. They had advanced out of the group stage three times, having been eliminated in their first knockout game in both 2010 and 2022. By far their most successful tournament was when they co-hosted with Japan in 2002 and made it all the way to the semi-finals, before losing to eventual runners up Germany; and then losing in the third place game to Turkiye to wind up fourth.
11. Turkey

Turkiye started the tournament with losses to Australia and Paraguay by 2-0 and 1-0 respectively. The loss to Paraguay was especially tough since they gave up a goal in the second minute and couldn't even up the match despite playing the entire second half with an extra player, as Paraguay's Miguel Almiron was issued a red card for covering his mouth during a confrontation. This meant that Turkiye would not be able to advance regardless of the result of their final game, as the best they could do would be to tie Australia or Paraguay for third place in the group and Turkiye would "lose the tiebreaker" against either team and finish fourth in the group based on head to head record. They were able to win their last game against the USA 3-2 withn a goal very late in added time, although the US had a very heavily rotated lineup as they had already clinched first place in the group. This allowed Turkiye to finish in 35th position, ahead of two teams that finished third in their groups, despite Turkiye finishing last in its group.

This was Turkiye's third appearance in the tournament having also been eliminated in the group stage in their first appearance back in 1954. Their second appearance was somewhat more successful, in 2002, where they lost in the semifinals to eventual champions Brazil. They rebounded in the third place match and beat host country South Korea.
12. Scotland

Scotland started off the tournament on the right foot beating Haiti 1-0 in their first group match. However, they had the misfortune of being in a group with two of the top teams in world ranking. In their second group game they lost 1-0 to Morocco who entered the tournament ranked number seven while in their last game they were shutout 3-0 by sixth ranked Brazil. The -3 goal differential meant they were eleventh ranked among the third place teams with only the top eight moving on to the knockout round, giving Scotland a 36th place finish.

Scotland's first two games were in Boston where they apparently got on well with the locals, although rumors that they drank Boston out of beer may have been an exaggeration. This was Scotland's first appearance in the World Cup since 1998 and their ninth overall. In all nine appearances they have failed to advance out of the group stage including five successive attempts between 1974 and 1990 along with the 1954 and 1958 tournaments.
