Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the association that started the promotion of traditional Irish sports?

Answer: The Gaelic Athletic Association

The Gaelic Athletic Association (or GAA) was started in 1884 by a man named Micheal Cusack. The traditional Irish sports that are put into the category of the "Sports of the GAA" are Gaelic football, hurling, handball, and rounders.
2. How many counties in Ireland don't have a Gaelic Football team?

Answer: 0

Every single county in Ireland has a Gaelic team. There are 32 counties in all of Ireland (including Northern Ireland).
3. The ball used in hurling is called a "sliotar".

Answer: True

Hurling is played with a wooden stick, called a "hurley", and a small ball, called a sliotar. The goals are similar to soccer goals, but you have to try to hit the ball over the other team's goalposts for a point, or into the goal for 3 points. However, there are 15 players of each team on the pitch too (including goalkeepers), and they can tackle you. You can pass to people on your own team.
4. What is the name of the stadium in Dublin which all Gaelic football finals are played in?

Answer: Croke Park

Croke Park is where all Gaelic football finals, semi-finals, and quarterfinals are played. It has 82,300 seats, and is the fourth largest stadium in Europe.
5. What is the name of the trophy won in the Gaelic Football final?

Answer: The Sam Maguire Cup

The Sam Maguire Cup is won by the team who wins the Gaelic Football final, and the Liam McCarthy Cup is won by the team who wins the Hurling Final. Micheal Cusack may have founded the GAA but he doesn't have a trophy named after him. Ronald McDonald has absolutely nothing to do with Irish sports.
6. What is the name for the sport of hurling, but for women?

Answer: Camogie

Hurling (in senior level) is only for men, while camogie is only for women.
7. Who was the first president of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA)?

Answer: Maurice Davin

Maurice Davin was the first president of the GAA. Micheal Cusack was the founder, but not the president. George Bernard Shaw was an Irish writer, and Arthur McGuinness was the founder of Guinness, a very famous beer.
8. County Tipperary won the first ever All-Ireland hurling final.

Answer: True

Tipperary won the first ever All-Ireland hurling final in 1808, and have continued to win many finals since.
9. How long is a senior level hurling match in a championship game?

Answer: 70 minutes

A hurling match in senior level is 70 minutes long, while at minor level it is usually 60 minutes long.
10. Once a year, Irish Gaelic football is combined with an Australian version of it. Then an Irish team and an Australian team play a number of matches until either of the teams gets the cup. What is this competition called?

Answer: International Rules

Unfortunately, it's not called the "Ireland-is-the-best Cup", although I must say that would be a great name.
