Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Multiple winners are not common, but Makybe Diva made history when she won her THIRD Cup, in 2005. Archer won the first two Cups, in 1861-62. Think Big (1974-75) and Peter Pan (1932 and '34) were also multiple winners. In 2015, Michelle Payne became the first female jockey to win, on the 100/1 shot, Prince of Penzance. Carbine, the 1890 winner, carried a record 66kg when he won.

Phar Lap (born in New Zealand, but a champion in Australia and USA), was the people's champion during the Great Depression. He was odds-on favourite when he won comfortably in 1930. Kingston Rule won in 1990, in the record time of 3.16.30 on the 3,200 metre Flemington track.

Piping Lane (1972) was the first to win over the metric distance- the previous year's distance was two miles, about 18 metres longer than the metric distance. The American horse, Americain, won in 2010. Kiwi's last-to-first win in the 1983 Cup had to be seen to be believed!

The distracters- Winx was a champion who won 33 consecutive race wins, a world record, however she concentrated on the shorter distances. Black Caviar only had 25 starts in four years, but she won ALL of them. She did not contest a Melbourne Cup. Bonecrusher won races on both sides of the Tasman Sea, including nine Group One races, but not the big one.

Secretariat was a champion who won the American Triple Crown in 1973. Hondo Grattan was a trotter (pacer), who won several big races in the 1970s, and Zoom Top was not eligible to run in the Melbourne Cup, because he was a greyhound!
