The Ode Trivia Quiz
Lest We Forget!
In most Returned Services Clubs across Australia and New Zealand, the Ode To Remembrance is recited daily. Can you fill in the gaps in this sombre piece of poetry?
Last 3 plays: Baby_Bebe (1/13), mulligas (11/13), Guest 174 (11/13).
Their shall never die,
The whole wide world is their ,
Their are written upon the hearts of ,
And whenever there is talk of ,
Their names will be held in remembrance.
They shall not old,
As we that are left grow old;
Age shall not them,
Nor the years
At the going down of the ,
And in the ,
We will them.
The 'Ode' is adapted from the fourth stanza of the poem "For the Fallen" by English poet Laurence Binyon, but there are many variations in its presentation. Some institutions will have the 'Last Post' playing in the background, or a remembrance mention of people that died on that particular day. All, however, will have the entire crowd standing in silence, and facing the west.
The 'Ode' was written not long after the start of WWI, and was adopted by the Australian Returned Services League in the early 1920s, mainly to remember the soldiers who gave their lives at disastrous battle at Gallipoli, Turkey, in 1915, but now incorporates ALL servicemen and women.
