Answer: Gene Pitney

In 1962-63, the Bacharach/David team wrote a few songs for an up-and-coming Gene Pitney, including '(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance', 'Only Love Can Break a Heart' and 'True Love Never Runs Smooth'.
5. 'The Look of Love' (1966)

Answer: Dusty Springfield

Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, better known as Dusty Springfield, was born in England and had many hits on both sides of the Atlantic. Her sensual version of 'The Look of Love' featured in the James Bond spoof film, 'Casino Royale'.
6. 'Trains and Boats and Planes' (1965)

Answer: Burt Bacharach

This one he kept for himself! However, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas and Dionne Warwick recorded versions shortly afterwards. It came from his debut album, 'Hit Maker!: Burt Bacharach Plays the Burt Bacharach Hits', where he sang many of the hits he had written for others.
7. 'What's New Pussycat?' (1965)

Answer: Tom Jones

The big Welsh voice of Tom Jones belted out this number in 1965, taking it to the Top Ten on the US and UK charts. It was the theme song for the Woody Allen movie of the same name, that starred Peter Sellers, Peter O'Toole, Romy Schneider and Ursula Andress.
8. 'On My Own' (1986)

Answer: Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald

Bacharach and his wife, Carole Bayer Sager, wrote this song for LaBelle, who invited her friend Michael McDonald to make it a duet. Unusually, the two singers recorded their individual pieces on opposite sides of the country, in Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

Neil Diamond helped write this one, and he had a Top Ten with both the single and the album of the same name.

Answer: Herb Alpert

Despite the name of his group (The Tijuana Brass), Herb Alpert is NOT Mexican- he was born in California. His success with the Bacharach/David-written 'This Guy's In Love With You' was unusual, as he actually sang, instead of playing his usual instrument of choice, the trumpet.

Answer: Nat King Cole

This song was the first ever written by Bacharach, and was the start of a huge string of hits. He had 73 top ten hits in the USA and 52 in the UK.

12. 'Blue on Blue' (1962)

Answer: Bobby Vinton

The Bacharach song was such a success that Vinton released an album of 'blue' songs, such as 'Mr Blue', 'Blueberry Hill', 'Blue Velvet', 'Blue Skies' and 'Blue Hawaii'.
13. 'The Story of My Life' (1957)

Answer: Marty Robbins

Marty Robbins was essentially a country singer, and he took this number to the top of both country AND pop charts. The song has been covered by various other artists, such as Herman's Hermits, Billy J Kramer, Val Doonican and Connie Francis.
14. 'Tower of Strength' (1961)

Answer: Gene McDaniels

His other big hits were 'A Hundred Pounds of Clay' and 'Chip, Chip'. After those successes, he concentrated more on songwriting and producing other artists.
