Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following threw seven no-hitters in their career?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

The strikeout king himself, the Ryan Express, threw six no-hitters in the American League, and one in the National. When he retired in 1993, he was the only pitcher to reach 4000 strikeouts, then 5000 strikeouts with 5714. Another amazing feat that Nolan pulled off was 18 seasons had gone between his first and last no-hitters.
2. Who threw four no-hitters in four consecutive seasons, and one of them was a perfect game?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Koufax had six of the greatest seasons that any pitcher could ask for from 1961-1966. His first no-no with the Dodgers was in 1962, then another in 1963. His third against the Phillies came in 1964, then his perfecto against the Cubs in 1965. He retired in 1966 with a 27-9 season record.
3. Baseball's first World Series no-hitter was a perfect game. Who threw it?

Answer: Don Larsen

Larsen won his first World Series game in style in 1956. It was game five against the Dodgers, and the Yankees won the series four games to three.
4. Who was the first American League pitcher to throw three no-hitters?

Answer: Bob Feller

The others were not pitchers. Rapid Robert spent his entire 18 seasons in a Cleveland uniform. He retired in 1956, but not before throwing a no-no in 1940, 1946, and 1951.
5. This amazing season in the National League saw five no-hitters thrown by Bill Stoneman, Jim Maloney, Don Wilson, Ken Holtzman, and Bob Moose. Which season did this happen?

Answer: 1969

Stoneman was an Expo, Maloney a Red, Wilson an Astro, Holtzman a Cub, and Moose a Pirate. It was both Stoneman's and Holtzman's first of two no-hitters in their career.
6. Who was the first American League pitcher to throw two no-hitters?

Answer: Cy Young

The others listed were career National League players, and none were pitchers. Young threw two no-hitters for Boston in 1904 and 1908. He had previously thrown a no-hitter for the Cleveland Spiders of the National League in 1897.
7. Which of the following pitchers did not throw two no-hitters in the same season?

Answer: Jack Chesbro

Although Chesbro's highlight was winning 41 games in 1904, he never threw a no-no. Reynolds threw two no-hitters with the Yankees in 1951. Trucks threw two with the Tigers in 1952. Ryan duplicated his feat in 1973 with the Angels. The Cy Young award did not begin until 1956, and even Nolan Ryan came up empty handed with that award. Ryan amazingly never received a MVP award either.
8. Which pitcher threw two no-hitters in consecutive games that they pitched?

Answer: Johnny Vander Meer

Neither Drysdale or McNally ever threw a no-hitter in their career. Vander Meer accomplished this amazing feat in 1938 when his Reds beat the Boston Braves and Brooklyn Dodgers on June 11 and June 15, respectively.
9. Which of the following teams threw the most no-hitters in the first 100 years of the American League?

Answer: Boston Pilgrims / Red Sox

The Boston club threw 16 no-hitters in the 20th century to lead the AL. The Yankees threw 11, including Don Larsen's World Series perfect game in 1956.
10. Which pitcher in his second Major League start, threw a no-hitter in 1991?

Answer: Wilson Alvarez

The others weren't pitchers. Alvarez of the White Sox defeated the Orioles 7-0 on August 11. Wilson went only 3-2 in the season and allowed 47 hits.
