Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1971 Baltimore Orioles had a tremendous four-pitcher rotation. With three pitchers in the names of Pat Dobson, Jim Palmer, and Mike Cuellar all winning 20 games, who led the team by winning 21?

Answer: Dave McNally

The others never pitched for the Orioles. Amazingly enough, although McNally went 21-5 in the season, he was still fourth in the Cy Young voting, with Vida Blue of the Athletics winning it along with the MVP award also. The Orioles finished the 1971 season with a 101-57 record, but lost in the World Series to the Pirates, four games to three.
2. The Oakland Athletics won three consecutive World Series from 1972-1974. With the arms of Vida Blue, Ken Holtzman, and Blue Moon Odom, the team was tough to hit against. Who was the Athletics' starter who won more than 20 games in each of those three glorious seasons?

Answer: Catfish Hunter

The others never played for the Oakland Athletics. Hunter won 21 games in the first of those seasons, then won 25 in 1974 which earned him the Cy Young award. Strangely enough, Hunter had only 143 strikeouts in the entire season. After the 1974 season, Jim signed as a free agent with the Yankees.

He went 23-14 in his first season wearing the pinstripes. He retired in 1979, then was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1987.
3. The 1968 Detroit Tigers had four arms win in double-figures, which helped the team win the World Series. Led by an amazing season of Denny McLain who went 31-6, he overshadowed a pitcher who went 17-9. Who was that pitcher who took a backseat to Denny, but won the World Series MVP to make up for it?

Answer: Mickey Lolich

The others listed were pitchers but never played for the Tigers. Lolich went 3-0 in the World Series, and striking out 21 which earned him the WS MVP. McLain went 1-2. Mickey met his season high in 1971 with 308 strikeouts and a record of 25-14. Lolich retired in 1979 as a Padre after 16 seasons.
4. The 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks won the World Series. With a five-pitcher rotation, they only had two pitchers who won over 20 games in the season. Randy Johnson won the Cy Young award for winning 21 games. Which Diamondback pitcher won more games than Randy in the season?

Answer: Curt Schilling

The others never played for Arizona and had retired prior to the 2000 season. Johnson went 21-6 while Schilling went 22-6, but it was Randy's 372 strikeouts that placed Curt Schilling in the runner-up position for the Cy Young award. In 2004, Schilling became a member of the Boston Red Sox and was the runner-up Cy Young winner again with his 21-6 record, losing to Johan Santana of the Twins.
5. In the year of the first World Series, 1903, the Boston Pilgrims earned their spot with four pitchers winning in double-figures along with three 20-game winners. Bill Dineen also won three games in the that World Series. Who led the Pilgrims with a 28-9 record?

Answer: Cy Young

The others were not pitchers. After playing 11 seasons in the National League, and mostly with the Cleveland Spiders, Young crossed over to the Boston Americans when the new American League began in 1901. He began his American League quest by going 33-10.

The Boston name change to the Somersets in 1902 didn't bother Cy, as he led the team again with a 33-11 record. Changing the name on his uniform again in 1903 to the Pilgrims, he won two World Series games. Boston defeated the Pirates, five games to three.
6. The 1963 Los Angeles Dodgers arguably had one of the most balanced rotations in history. With Don Drysdale winning 19 games, Johnny Podres taking in 14 wins, and their fourth starter Bob Miller picking up 10, who was the teams ace pitcher who won 25 games, picked up the MVP, Cy Young, and the Triple Crown awards?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

From 1963-1966, Koufax won three Cy Young awards, three Triple Crowns, one MVP, and two World Series MVPs. Sandy also set a record for winning the most games in a players final season with 27. He retired in 1966, then the hall opened its doors to him in 1972.
7. The 1959 Pittsburgh Pirates pitching rotation wasn't the most famous in baseball history, but there were a couple of outstanding accomplishments within. First, there was Harvey Haddix who threw a perfect game for 12 innings, then lost it in the 13th. More amazingly, their closer went 18-1, and at one point in the season was 17-0. Who was this right hander?

Answer: Roy Face

The others never played for Pittsburgh. Face won 18 games while only pitching in 93-1/3 innings, and striking out only 69 batters. Vernon Law went 18-9 in the season while Haddix went 12-12. The 1959 Pirates finished fourth in the NL, but came back to win the NL in 1960, and also defeat the New York Yankees in the World Series.
8. The 1927 Yankees were possibly the greatest all-around power in baseball history, and had an amazing six pitchers win in double-figures. With the all-star cast in the bats of Ruth, Gehrig, Meusel and company, it didn't take much to get a win as the team won 110 games in the season, the first time they topped the century mark. Which pitcher led the team by being their only 20-game winner?

Answer: Waite Hoyt

The others were not pitchers, and retired from baseball before 1920. Hoyt appeared in 36 games going 22-7. He took top honors amongst the arms of the team. Herb Pennock went 19-8, Wilcy Moore 19-7, Urban Shocker 18-6, Dutch Ruether 13-6, and George Pipgras went 10-3.
9. In 1998 and 1999, all the New York Yankees' starting five pitchers won in double-figures both seasons. They had only one 20-game in the name of who?

Answer: David Cone

The others listed all retired before 1998, and none ever pitched for the Yankees. Cone went 20-7 with 209 strikeouts in 1998 to lead the Yankees in those two seasons. To indicate the strength of their staff, their closer Mariano Rivera, won only seven games total in the two seasons.
10. The 1954 Cleveland Indians won an amazing 111 games. They had five pitchers win in double-figures, including two 20-game winners. One pitcher was Early Wynn who went 23-11. Who led the team with his own 23-7 record?

Answer: Bob Lemon

Although the others were Cleveland Indians, they were not pitchers. Lemon pitched his entire career with the Indians from 1946-1958. He won 20+ games in seven of his 13 seasons. Had the Cy Young award began two seasons earlier, Lemon would most likely have received the first award for his 1954 efforts.
