1. The Rockford Files

"The Rockford Files" ran from 1974 to 1980. It was Post's breakthrough performance, after the short-lived 1973 crime drama "Toma." The detective drama starred James Garner and the theme reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1975 and earned Post a Grammy Award.

Prior to "The Rockford Files," Post was a producer for "The Andy Williams Show" and won his first Grammy for his work in the 1968 Mason Williams instrumental "Classical Gas."
2. Magnum, P.I.

"Mangum, P.I." ran from 1980 to 1988. The series was remade in 2018 and that one lasted for six years.
3. Hill Street Blues

"Hill Street Blues," which ran from 1981 to 1987, centered around the police force of an unnamed city. The theme had Larry Carlton on guitar, reached number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts, and won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

Post also had success in 1981 with the theme to "The Greatest American Hero," performed by Joey Scarbury and reaching number two in the United States.
4. The A-Team

The show about a team of mercenaries on the run for a crime they didn't commit lasted from 1983 to 1987. The series made famous for Mr. T was made into a movie in 2010.
5. Hunter

The LA-based crime drama ran from 1984 to 1991 and starred Fred Dryer as the lead character. Before acting, Dryer played twelve years in the NFL and was the first player to score two safeties in a 1973 game.
6. L.A. Law

"L.A. Law" ran from 1986 to 1994 and dealt with many of the social and cultural issues of the time. A number of actors who guest-starred on "L.A. Law" went on to fame, including Don Cheadle, Kathy Bates, David Schwimmer, James Avery, Bryan Cranston, Carrie-Anne Moss, CCH Pounder, and William H. Macy. The theme won Post a Grammy Award in 1988.
7. Doogie Howser, M.D.

The show that gave Neil Patrick Harris his start lasted from 1989 to 1993. Harris played the title character, a child prodigy doctor.
8. Law & Order

The original series lasted for twenty years from 1990 to 2010. The original was revived in 2022. Spinoffs include "Special Victims Unit," "Criminal Intent," "Trial By Jury," and "Organized Crime." International adaptations aired in the UK, Canada, and France.
9. The Commish

Michael Chiklis played the police commissioner of a fictional New York town that aired from 1991 to 1996. Jason Alexander was considered for the role, but turned it down as "Seinfeld" became successful.
10. NYPD Blue

One of the most controversial police dramas in television history, "NYPD Blue" ran from 1993 to 2005. The Stephen Bochco series was criticized for its nudity and profanity, and thirty ABC affiliates did not air the premiere, with one in Mississippi never showing "NYPD Blue" during its run.

Post won an Emmy for "Murder One," another Stephen Bochco creation. An award does not guarantee success, being cancelled after two seasons in 1997
