Asta Twelvetrees is the town nurse. She grew up in Patience and becomes Harry's first human friend. She is the first one to learn Harry is an alien when she, Harry, and Darcy fall into a crevasse. Harry is injured and cannot maintain his human form. She saves his life and Darcy saves them all.

Unbeknownst to everyone in town the person appearing to them to be Dr. Harry Vanderspiegel is really an alien who has come to kill every human on earth. He crashes his ship and loses the device that would kill everyone. He stays on earth to search for the device and complete his mission.

His efforts to blend in lead him to become the new town doctor with sometimes hilarious consequences. Alan Tudyk, as Harry, is wonderfully silly and often insightful about the human condition.

Max Hawthorne is the son of the mayor and is the only one in Patience who can see the aliens as they really are, not their human forms. Harry does not want to be found out so at first tries several times to kill Max. Later, Max helps Harry find his device, not knowing what it really is. They become friends even though Harry will not admit that he likes Max.

Darcy Bloom grew up in Patience and was an Olympic skier until she had a career-ending accident. She is Asta's best friend and would do anything for her. She bartends at the local pub and is a bit of a mess. Asta and Harry keep the truth about him a secret from her. When she finds out, she couldn't care less that he is an alien and becomes a valuable ally.

The Mantid is a giant green preying mantis looking alien. He has a penchant for eating heads, whether human or animal. He can change his appearance to appear human and that makes him extremely dangerous. He kills several people in Patience before being killed by Harry's birdfriend, Heather. However, he regenerates and Harry has to face him after he regains his alien energy.

Heather is a Blue Avian alien and looks like a big bird. She is Harry's girlfriend. He is incredibly attracted to her and they have a clutch of little bird babies together. She betrays Harry but only because her family was threatened. She comes back to explain and say how sorry she is for what she did.

Bridget is Harry's son. He hatches from the egg retrieved by Harry and Asta in New York City. After they return to Patience, the egg hatches in Harry's basement. Harry suddenly has a son he can not relate to and doesn't want. Before Harry decides on the name Bridget he tries out quite a few others, such as Moesha, Brad, Jebediah and Merle.

Bruce is a Grey alien who is guarding Harry and Robert while they are imprisoned by the Greys at their base on the moon. He helps them escape because he wants to see Earth. He can't survive in Earth's atmosphere but goes anyway because he has dreamt of seeing Earth his whole life. Harry and Asta find him in Las Vegas playing the slots.

He later melts into a gelatinous mess and dies on Earth, but not before forgiving Harry for almost betraying him.

Peter Bach is famous as the "Alien Tracker", an alien abduction expert. His son, Robert, was stolen by the Grey aliens before he was born. Peter has been trying to find him ever since. He is invited to Patience by Liv Baker, the town deputy who is huge fan. Peter, like Max, can see aliens in their real form and spots Harry.

He is captured by Harry and held in his basement. Asta sets him free, and he starts to work with Harry in hopes of finally finding their sons.

General McAllister has been searching for aliens her entire life and runs a secret government operation to that end. Her father committed suicide when she was a child because they saw an alien ship but no one would believe him. She has lots of people working for her trying to find an alien, any alien, and using very questionable means.

She has had many people abducted and held in an underground bunker. She has had no success until she discovers Harry's son, that has been kidnapped by her forces, is one.
