Building Relationship Levels can't begin until Verso is in your party, so the whole process starts after Gustave is killed in the Stone Wave Cliffs. All progress in this manner must be completed at camp, and all you need to do to move along with it is talk/spend time with the people in the Expedition, one-on-one, developing your rapport between them and Verso.

In any case, you learn a bit about those characters and their lives in the Canvas and unveil more and more about Verso's dark secrets along the way, accumulating Gradient Attacks at the same time.

Every time that Verso is able to spend a bit more time alone with the Expedition members, he'll have conversations that lead to a raising of the Relationship Level, and each point brings them closer to maxing out near the end of the game. You can approach these conversations whenever you want down the line, but they tend to become available with the completion of each major area in the main story quest. Sometimes, you can update characters twice in one go; sometimes they don't get updated at all. Each character can receive three Gradient Attacks via these means, and sometimes you'll get cosmetics or records as rewards.

Answer: Sirène's Dress

Building up Lune and Verso's relationship often involves learning new things due to Lune's thirst for knowledge and discovery, and as this progresses, it will become apparent that one thing on her mind is the fate of her parents, both members of Expedition 46. Though Verso never travelled with 46 during their time on the Continent, he does know their trail took them to Sirène's Dress, on the far side of Sirène's island. Using her guitar, Lune can open the gate and the Expedition can fight the Chromatic Glissando to get the answers she seeks, bringing her Relationship Level up to 6 in the process.

Answer: Water

The fear of water, as she later explains, is as a result of her husband, Pierre's death. After Pierre died in a boating accident five years before his Gommage, she tried to drown herself in grief, swimming afraid from Lumière. While she ended up, mysteriously, surviving the ordeal, her unborn baby didn't.

In the later stages of maxing Sciel's Relationship Level, Verso will share deepest, darkest secrets with Sciel and re-teach her to swim in the camp's lake. At max level, she'll learn the End Slice Gradient Attack.

Answer: Two

There are five characters in the Expedition that Verso can speak with in order to develop Relationship Levels, and of them, Lune and Sciel are optional and brief romantic interests that can emerge. In both cases, the romance will blossom only if you select answers to questions that lead in those directions, allowing Verso to spend an early night with Sciel or compose a song with Lune. Neither of these instances amounts to any significant reward or change to the story should you choose to pursue them (and you can only pursue one), but they will serve to deepen your connection with these characters headed into the game's ending.

Answer: Alicia

Once Act 3 commences, Maelle will indicate to Verso that she found Alicia's letter-- the one he was reading when the city experienced its mass Gommage-- and she'll state her wish to speak to her and understand her motivations. Should you decide to pursue this side-quest, necessary for maxing out Maelle's Relationship Level, it will take the Expedition to a mountain near the Monolith known as 'The Reacher'.

At the peak, they'll find the third Axon, Alicia, and it will result in a one-on-one fight between her and Maelle culminating in Maelle performing the Gommage on her doppelganger.

Answer: Haircuts

Monoco will join the Expedition the latest of the party members, showing up early into Act 2, but kick starting his Relationship Level process a little later. On the bright side, Verso and Monoco's history is quite substantial as the two shared numerous adventures and events in their long lives together on the Continent (with Verso having taught Monoco how to communicate). Because of their existing bond, most of their Relationship Level sequences involve hanging out, duelling, and awkwardly sharing their emotions in the way only close friends can, at one point even giving each other haircuts and gassing each other up over them.

The step to raise Monoco's Relationship level to 6 involves resurrecting Noco, who's killed by Renoir after the Expedition passes through Old Lumière, and this requires flying Esquie out to the Sacred River and skipping the queue to restore the Gestral to reality.

Unfortunately, this means passing through Golgra, the 'chef' of the Gestrals, who will chastise him for attempting to butt into the line. If Verso and Monoco can defeat Golgra in a two-on-one fight, she'll head out for 'leg day' and Noco can come back to life.

He'll spend the rest of the game recovering in Gestral Village while Monoco and Verso will solidify an unbreakable bond, unlocking Break Point, Monoco's final Gradient Attack.

Answer: Verso

Since Esquie doesn't join battles as an active party member during the game, he provides an opportunity for Verso to level up his own Gradient Attacks, and fortunately, Esquie is quite easy to get along with and build up. In later stages of the Relationship Level, Esquie will reveal that he understands there are two Versos, but both are his friends and he believes the two are different, but like cousins. To Esquie, the difference doesn't much matter; he just hopes they can go on adventures forever.

Answer: Underwater diving

In upgrading Esquie's Relationship Level to 6, Verso will need to take Esquie back to his nest to speak to François, who has apparently been in possession of his fourth and final rock, Urrie, the whole time. Esquie's plan here is to trade rocks, giving a brand new one shaped like François and Clea, in exchange for the magical stone, but François will be infuriated by the idea, prompting a battle against Verso solo. If Verso wins, he'll make the trade and Esquie will be able to dive into the Continent's waters to collect items at will.
