Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As a reward for completing the first trial, Monokuma gives the students a bunch of strange items that will unlock new parts of the school. Whose lab is not opened during this time?

Answer: Rantaro

Gonta, Ryoma, Maki, Himiko and Kirumi all receive access to their labs during this chapter. All of the labs are located in newly accessible areas of the school the students are able to unlock with the strange items.

Rantaro's lab is not revealed until Chapter 5 and it cannot be accessed until Chapter 6 because Rantaro is dead and dead students' labs are sealed off.
2. This chapter's motive is a throwback to the series' very first motive: videos from loved ones. However, the Monokubs mix up everyone's video. Whose video does Shuichi receive?

Answer: Kaito

The Monokubs distribute motive videos on Monokub pads. Each video features a student's loved ones delivering a message before disappearing violently. Shuichi receives Kaito's video which features his grandparents encouraging him to work hard at becoming an astronaut. Shuichi wonders if he should give Kaito his video even though Kaito was angry with him.

At the trial, Monokuma seems confused about video mixed up, indicating every student was supposed to receive his or her own video. However, later he claims the mix up was intentional.
3. For what purpose does Kokichi say he tricked Gonta into hosting an Insect Meet and Greet?

Answer: So they can all watch the motive videos together

Kokichi, the Ultimate Supreme Leader, told Gonta, the Ultimate Anthropologist, that everyone else hated bugs. Gonta then went around and forcibly dragged everyone to his research lab to learn about all the insects there. Gonta is able to bring most of the students for his Insect Meet and Greet, although not all of them are there at the same time and some don't come at all.

Kokichi reveals his intention was to gather everyone together so he had free reign to collect everyone's monokub pad which he then hoped they could all watch together which would make the Killing Game more interesting. Much later on in the game, it is implied Kokichi's true intention was actually something else altogether.
4. What do the students decide to do with their motive videos?

Answer: Not watch them

Almost immediately, the students agree to not watch their own videos since doing so would only increase the chance of someone committing a murder. However, Ryoma is curious to discover who appeared in his video but agrees it is for the best not to know. They are tempted many times to trade videos but they never do so.
5. What kind of magic trick does Himiko perform?

Answer: Escape from a tank of water

Since Himiko, the Ultimate Magician (or Ultimate Mage as she claims), was one of the students whose research lab opened, she decides to put on a show for everyone in the gym. The trick she does is similar to one of Houdini's famous acts where she will be submerged in a tank of water and has one minute to escape before man-eating piranhas are dropped in the tank from another one suspended above it.

The students grow increasingly worried as the end of a minute nears and Himiko has not emerged from the tank which is covered with a black sheet. However, Himiko does appear safe just before the piranhas are dropped. When the sheet is removed, Ryoma's dead body is floating in the tank, handcuffed and eaten by the piranhas.
6. How did Ryoma's body make its way into the tank of water?

Answer: It fell from the piranha tank

Much is made of how Himiko escaped from the tank and whether or not that had anything to do with Ryoma's murder. The back of the tank has a small compartment that Himiko could escape from and could also hide Ryoma's body. This makes Himiko the prime suspect as she would have seen the body had she escaped this way. Himiko further incriminates herself by insisting she never saw the body and didn't use the door because she is a real mage who uses magic, not a magician who uses conjuring tricks.

However, that is all a red herring. Ryoma's long dead body was stored in the piranha tank since the night before and separated from the fish by a glass panel. When the minute was up, the piranhas and Ryoma fell into the larger glass tank on the stage.
7. What crucial piece of information does Monosuke accidentally reveal at the class trial?

Answer: Someone asked if it was okay to step on the gym ledge

Tensions grew between the four remaining Monokubs during this chapter. After Monodam killed Monokid at the first execution, Monophanie and Monotaro were afraid of him and began siding with him over Monosuke, who challenged Monodam's authority.

At the trial, the possibility of someone transporting Ryoma's dead body from his lab via a zipline across the swimming pool area to the gym's upper window is discussed. This seems like the only way it could have been done but placing the body in the piranha tank would require the killer to step on the ledge of the gym's window. Gym access is forbidden past ten o'clock when this even must have happened. When someone asks Monokuma if it would have been permissible for the person to step on the ledge window without breaking a rule, Monokuma demurs to keep the trial fair. However, Monosuke blabs that someone already asked them, indicating this is how the murder happened and removing any remaining doubts. Monophanie and Monotaro scold Monosuke for doing this and it is no surprised when he is killed during this chapter's execution.
8. Who appeared in Ryoma's motive video?

Answer: No one

Ryoma, already with few reasons to live, was curious to know who appeared in his video. Since he received Maki's video, Ryoma assumed she had his. Indeed, this was the case and she reluctantly showed him the video. However, no one appeared in it because he doesn't have any loved ones. Ryoma is further resigned to let someone murder him.
9. Kirumi killed Ryoma because she learned from her video that she is actually what?

Answer: Prime Minister

Kirumi received her own motive video which reminded her that she was made de facto Prime Minister (presumably of Japan) and as the leader of the country, she was responsible for her citizens. Her video revealed that a horrendous meotor shower was crashing into Earth and that a deadly virus was spreading. Desperate to save her people, Kirumi was willing to sacrifice the others to perform her duty. When Ryoma learns of this, he willingly lets Kirumi murder him.

However, her plan is exposed and she receives the Strand of Agony punishment which sees her climbing a thorny strand to freedom only for the strand to break and send her crashing to the ground.
10. After the trial concludes, Maki reveals that she is not actually the Ultimate Childcare Giver but the Ultimate what?

Answer: Assassin

From the moment her lab was opened, Maki rarely left it and didn't allow anyone into it. She didn't participate in any of the events of the chapter, including the investigation, until the class trial. After Kirumi is executed, Maki is forced to reveal her true talent because Ryoma gave Kokichi Maki's video which called her the Ultimate Assassin. Maki explains that she lied because she would be an obvious suspect whenever a murder occurred.
