"SpaceWar!" was created by MIT programmer Martin Graetz, Steve Russell and Wayne Wiltanen for the new Programmed Data Processor-1 as a way to test the computers ability for quick calculating. "SpaceWar!" involved two players trying to blow up the other player. The game first came out in 1962.
2. Diablo II

Game developer Condor created a game that had players fighting monsters while in dungeons. Condor presented the game to another game developer named Blizzard. The developer liked the game concept so much they bought Condor and renamed it Blizzard North.
The original "Diablo" did so well for Blizzard North that they created a sequel, "Diablo II". "Diablo II" used features that weren't in the first game. "Diablo II" came out in 2000 with upgraded graphics and new characters.
3. Myst

Video footage was used with actors. Sequels to "Myst" were "Riven", "Exile", "Revelation", and "End of Ages". A spinoff called "Uru: Ages Beyond Myst" was developed in 2003.
4. Gears of War

Created by Cliff Bleszinski, "Gears of War" was initially known as "Unreal Warfare", a sequel to "Unreal". However, he wanted a more military look for the video game so the name was changed to "Gears of War". Microsoft made a deal with the game developer Epic for "Gears of War" to only be released for Xbox 360 in 2006. "Gears of War" has spawned several successful sequels.
5. SimCity

"SimCity" was developed by Will Wright because he liked architecture and wanted to see how cities were constructed. He originally named the game "Micropolis" but changed it to SimCity because the cities being built in the video game were simulations. Once a player created a city, the player would then have to manage everything involved in the city. "SimCity" came out in 1989 and has had many sequels.
6. Among Us

"Among Us" was first released in 2018 for smartphones by the game developer Innersloth, but didn't really take off in the United States until the Covid pandemic of 2020. The premise of the game was trying to kill as many people as possible before being discovered as the killer. "Among Us" took place in space.
7. Grand Theft Auto III

The original "Grand Theft Auto" was released in 1997 on PCs. It stirred up a lot of controversy because of the violence, but also gave the player more freedom in the game. The sequel to "Grand Theft Auto" was released in 1999. When "Grand Theft Auto III" was ready to be released DMA Design had it released on Playstation 2. With the game being on Playstation 2, the game was able to be in 3D. "Grand Theft Auto III" was released in 2001 by DMA Design.
8. Minecraft

"Minecraft" was first released for PC/Mac in 2011 by game developer Mojang. The game was developed by a Swedish programmer named Markus Persson who was also one of the founders of Mojang. The object of "Minecraft" is to use items found inside of smashed blocks to create new items.
9. Stardew Valley

Eric Barone created his own farming game after being inspired by other farming games he played back in the early '90s. He spent four years building the farming community he named "Stardew Valley" so that players could create their own towns and farms. The game was released in 2016.
10. Asteroids

"Asteroids" was developed by Ed Logg and Lyle Raines in 1979. The game was simply a spaceship shooting asteroids as it flew through space. If an asteroid hit the spaceship, it would blow up and the game would end. Ed Logg and Lyle Raines sold 60,000 "Asteroid" arcade games in the United States.
11. Assassin's Creed

Patrice Désilets went to the Middle East for inspiration when developing his next video game. He based it on a brotherhood of assassins that walked around unnoticed in the 1100s. The video game developer Ubisoft spent three years developing recreations of Jerusalem and Damascus for the game; however it would take place in modern times.
The original "Assassins Creed" was released in 2007.
12. Street Fighter II: The World Warrior

13. Mario Kart 8

14. Donkey Kong

Shigeru Miyamoto developed "Donkey Kong" from the relics of defunct games of Nintendo. "Donkey Kong" became a success in 1981 and 80,000 "Donkey Kong" arcade games were built. The red hatted hero in the game fighting Donkey Kong for his kidnapped girlfriend would later become known as Mario.
15. Super Mario 64

Mario's first foray into 3D was on Nintendo 64. The controller had a small joystick to make Mario's movement easier. A shadow was added to Mario's feature to help the player see how far Mario had gone when he jumped. "Super Mario 64" became the best selling game for Nintendo 64.
It helped other game creators enter the world of 3D with their video games. "Super Mario 64" was released in 1996.
