Picturing More Video Games Trivia Quiz

A follow up to my earlier quiz, you need to match the photo to the game which it represents. Some photos show the game title while others relate to a feature of the game, or a character. They should all be well known to players and non-players.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Crash Bandicoot

The first game in the 'Crash Bandicoot' series was issued in 1994, featuring a cartoon version of the Australian marsupial, the bandicoot. The storyline of the first game, just called 'Crash Bandicoot', was based on the attempts of Crash to foil the world domination plans of his creator, a scientist called Neo Cortex. The game proved popular and soon led to a whole series, including into the 2020s.

The photo is of a bandicoot, so you shouldn't have had much trouble although it does look rather different from the one in the game.
2. Sonic the Hedgehog

The photo clue here was to point towards a character from the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' series, the echidna called Knuckles. The 'Sonic' games date from 1991 and the franchise is still ongoing in the 2020s. The game is a platform based challenge, with players having to move between levels by making their characters jump. Knuckles didn't appear until 1994 and was originally an enemy of Sonic, but later became an ally.

I did look for pictures of echidnas, but they look too similar to hedgehogs, so I went for some real knuckles for the clue.
3. Legend of Zelda

Another more cryptic clue here to point you in the direction of Link, the main character in the 'Legend of Zelda' games. Based in the fictional land of Hyrule, the first game in what has become a long-running franchise came out in 1986. The stories are based around Princess Zelda who is fighting to preserve her kingdom from malignant forces. Link is a brave hero who fights on her side.

The picture is of a chain, which is made up of links, to give you your clue.
4. Gears of War

Dating originally from 2006, 'Gears of War' was the first game in what became a long-running franchise. The game was developed by Xbox Game Studios for the Xbox console and was also available on PCs and PlayStations. The game is classed as a third-person shooter and is set on a fictional planet named Sera.

The photo is of a manual gear stick, also called a gear lever or gearshift, depending on where you live,
5. Candy Crush Saga

'Candy Crush Saga' is a matching game created by King, a video game developer from Sweden. It involves matching at least three candies of the same colour to clear a board and move up levels. It was originally available only on Facebook before being extended to other platforms and mobile phones. Although free to play, it does offer opportunities to buy extra moves and other boosters which is how the company makes its money.

The photo hint of some mixed types of sweets (candy in the USA) should have been enough of a clue for you.
6. The Sims

Published by Electronic Arts, 'The Sims' is available on pretty much every game system you can think of. The game involves creating families and directing the way they live. Unlike most of the games in the quiz, it does not have a particular goal and players can create their own lifestyles for the people in their game. The game has proved extremely popular with expansion packs and sequels, set in different eras, appearing regularly.

If you have a mobile phone, and few of us don't, you should have recognised the SIM card which identifies the handset as your own - nothing directly to do with the game, of couse.
7. Bejeweled

Like 'Candy Crush Saga', 'Bejeweled' is a matching game where different type of gemstone have to be matched into groups of three. The original game dates from 2000, with several sequels following. It was published by Electronic Arts and appeared on numerous platforms including personal computers. It has sold millions of copies with downloads exceeding 500 million, and that figure dates from 2013.

A straightforward clue this time, with a pile of gems to point you to the answer.
8. Minecraft

'Minecraft' has been around since 2011, originally for PCs before being extended to other platforms and mobile phones. The game involves exploring different dimensions and collecting different items, including dirt, rocks and lava. Players can also create various weapons, protective items, such as armour, and tools to enable them to progress more quickly.

The visual clue shows a group of miners to direct you towards this game.
9. Frogger

The earliest game in the quiz, 'Frogger' dates from 1981 and was originally an arcade game, which was adapted and remade to be played on computers and other game consoles. The object of the game was to guide frogs to safety by crossing a road full of traffic, which had to be avoided, then getting moving water by jumping on logs or turtles as they passed by. Resting between the road and river was also hazardous as a snake would randomly appear and kill the frog.

The photo hint managed to include both a log and and a turtle as well as some water.
10. Angry Birds

The 'Angry Birds' game was very much in the news when it first appeared in 2009, being particularly popular on mobile phones. The birds were angry due to repeated efforts by a breed of green pigs to raid their nests and eat their eggs. Players had to use a catapult to launch various types of birds at the porcine marauders and see them off.

The bird in the photo looks pretty annoyed, so should have a good enough hint.
